What a mess. Evans 'fesses up, apologises and gets four weeks for a first offence, Collard denies everything, still gets found guilty, it's not his first rodeo and he effectively ends up with two weeks less punishment.

I would have gone 4 down to 2 on the basis that he showed good character in self reporting. I think there’s something to respect there that he made a mistake and owned it in its entirety, unlike some other recent examples.

Collard was just the wrong decision, so can’t be compared with Evans. Collard should have received 10 weeks. But the further you appeal in the AFL the more susceptible the AFLs system is to collapsing and you either get off altogether on a technicality (Crippa) or they just stuff the thing up (Collard).

hey and while we are at it get the firing squad out and kill them for a racial slur

You'd have to be an stupid idiot to say those words on the footy ground, the punishment more than fits the crime. You'd get sacked for saying similar in a regular job.

The fact homophobia is such a big problem in 2026, shows we still have a long way to go as a society. I mean, gay marriage has been legal in Australia since 2016 ffs.

Im gonna be honest, for kids the "f" word has had nothing to do with homosexuality for about the past 20 years. Its meaning has completely changed

Glad we didn’t play the Indigenous card like more shameless clubs.

It’s an insult to both the Indigenous and the LGBTQ+ community.

Oh my wear is the cross to nail the Brisbane lions too.
Spare me

If your player was pleading innocence and there was no real evidence of it happening they would of done exactly what we did.

Stop being so self righteous

Appeals board knew the evidence against him was incredibly weak. It shouldn't be compared.

No excuses and at some point the message will sink in. Nothing stopping players calling an opponent a 'moron', 'dickhead', '****wit' etc, just steer clear of homophobic language or a word like maggot that can easily be misheard for something homophobic.
Fine the players something like 3 months wages and I'm sure most not all will engage their brains before making these homophobic slurs.

I remember trying to use that excuse in the late 90's. Didn't work then, doesn't work now.

What do you even mean? I'm not saying it's okay to use the word, however using it does not necessarily mean homophobia nowadays. In fact I would be utterly shocked if the players used it deliberately against an opposition player because they were gay. It's become just a generic insult word along with b**** that has no real deeper meaning and is thrown around like confetti by young kids

Theres always a reason why we direct a specific insult at someone, they dont all mean the same thing. Calling someone a ****wit is different from calling them a bitch, or a Whore or a campaigner or a s**tstain or a Tosser, or a prick.

So when someone calls someone a *** or a ****, they mean something.

4 weeks for that is a joke.

"He was remorseful and self-reported" just means that he wanted to get ahead of it before the other team reported it.

The fact we still have players who think it's okay to use derogatory slurs in this day and age is disgusting. There's no justifying it.

Nobody is using those words unless they're part of their usual vocabulary.

100%. Plenty of people grow up using words as insults they don’t know the etymology of. When someone gets called a w***er, is the person using that word being literal? It’s just a word.

Then that just means the AFL's Anti discrimination course is incredibly lacking. There should be no excuse for anyone in the AFL not knowing what that word means.
