What it means for Brisbane:
A chance to rubber-stamp its credentials as a premiership contender. The Lions would love to win – obviously – to strengthen their grip on a top-two spot, but more importantly they'd like to play a brand of footy that proves to themselves and others they'll be real players in September.

What it means for Geelong: Since the bye the Cats have been patchy, following a win with a loss four straight times. This match marks not only a chance to string together successive wins, but remind the competition why they've been table-toppers since round one.

The stat: Let's go with two stats. Since Ash McGrath's after-the-siren "Miracle on Grass" win in 2013, Brisbane has lost eight straight matches to Geelong. The average margin has been 50 points. This match also pits the team that has scored the most points (Brisbane) against the team that has conceded the least (Geelong).

The match-up: Tom Hawkins (No.27 overall in the Official AFL Player Ratings) has more success against the Lions than any other club, kicking 50 goals from 15 matches. When the teams met last year, Tomahawk bagged seven against Harris Andrews, who was playing his first game back from a month out with concussion. Watch for in-form Marcus Adams (No.521) to start on Hawkins and Andrews to take the springy Esava Ratugolea.

It’s a big week for: One of the feel-good stories of the season for Brisbane is the form of Lincoln McCarthy. After seven injury-interrupted seasons with Geelong, the explosive half-forward has played all 20 games this year and will mark the 50th of his career against his former club.

Big call: Lions to be the first team to score 100 points against Geelong this season.

Prediction: Brisbane by 17 points.

Well I was going to type "Finally a tip I can be sure of - the large felines are a lock to win! (barring a draw of course)" but when I tried to find a better word to describe all large cats I realised that the Geelong variety didn't seem to be on the list ... I needed to find something that could also be Lions not just Geelong so I couldn't really use pussy cat, kitten, furball, or alley cat ...

Ah well - go Lions!

It is just Chief's House advantage - if either side wins by exactly 30 points Chief wins it all!

sad edit: I suppose technically the Lions winning by 30 would also be the Cats winning by -60 which *is* less that 30....
Win by 1 to 29 = win by < 30

30 or more = win by 30+

How good is mathematical stuff?

It will be 27 degrees and full sun for bounce down on Saturday, I wonder how the Cats will handle it, it was similar today and even for me a born and bred Queenslander it was quite hot and sticky.

Agreed, home field advantage and conditions should be the difference. Brisbane by 5 goals

All week I've thought Geelong by 6-8 goals but our selection has made me a little less optimistic. 9 defenders in the side against the best attack in the game. I can't see Brisbane kicking a big score here so If Geelong can kick 80 points they'll win and I fully expect a low scoring game.

If Geelong win the midfield and keep the ball in their forward half I can't see Brisbane scoring freely enough score to win given the way we set up down back.

Geelong by 4 goals.

Game of the round for mine. Everyone goes to the West Coast v Richmond game but this actually has more importance to finals positioning and the season.

If Brisbane loses to Geelong, they will have to beat Richmond at the MCG to keep their top 4 spot (Pies need to win both and make up around 100 points in 4 games which are certainly doable if the Lions cop a hiding in either the Cats or Tigers games), which would be a huge ask. Geelong can sure up a top 2 finish with a win, but could drop that home final with a loss.

Huge, huge game.

The chances of Geelong missing out on a home MCG final if we lose to Brisbane are slim. That would require Brisbane and West Coast both beating Richmond, West Coast beating Hawthorn and Geelong losing to Carlton. The odds of that happening are 1,000-1

Geelong vs Carlton result wouldn't matter if Lions and Eagles win both rounds as they'll finish top 2.
Geelong + Pies/Richmond will be taking the 3rd and 4th spot.

Ah yes but it's kinda what I said. I can't see Richmond losing both of those games anyway.

You watched many of our games this year or just highlights? You sound like my Geelong supporting mate who said similar, ‘soft draw’, ‘beaten nobody’; while admitting he hadn’t actually watched any of our games this year.

I haven't watched any geelong games this season. But all the commentary is they are old and slow. Been inconsistent the last 8 weeks. Played some good footy and some bad footy.

If we can pressure them like we have almost every other team we have played we should stop their clean ball movement. We are one of the fastest teams in the comp.

Oh and who doesn't like watching Gary Ablett Jr live?
