Brisbane is crying out for a suitable secondary venue; one that'll handle 5 to 10k in comfort. Perfect for preseason games, the AFLW, the ressies, NEAFL/QAFL finals...
Totally agree. Would be plenty of events that this would be perfect for. Perhaps this is what the club is looking at. Could probably make a killing if the club can develop 1 of the training ovals into a small venue that can be hired out. Hire fees plus extra advertising revenue. You look at something like the redcliffe dolphins for the NRL. It is a really good size venue for those small pre season exhibition type games. And i think people like having that suburban feel to those types of grounds.

Great crowds so far but I am a bit worried when the roadshow rolls into Brisbane we will get something very low like <1000. Hope to be wrong!

As POBT said, if each Lions player alone has 30-50 friends and family members in the crowd that's 660-1100 people alone. Then add the Lions fans. They got in the vicinity of 1000 people to a practice match in the wind and rain 2 weeks ago. I don't think you should be worried.

Weather going to be seriously average here for the next couple of days. Should clear by game day but the ground will be heavy under foot, which given the slog we had against Melbourne will make life difficult for them.

It's ok. We're good in the wet.

I'd heard talk last year about Hickey Park (Wilston-Grange's gome ground) possibly being a future venue for the women's team, tying in with the Brisbane Bandits move there. Last I heard they were looking at adding stands that would amount to a ground capacity of 5000, although the lack of infrastructure scares me (not that it's any different at South Pine). The airport would make sense, but my gut feel is you'd want to keep the womens team games accessible which means being as central as possible.

Video games are a team aren't they?
Any idea of the capacity of Yeronga? I remember watching the NEAFL final there a few years ago. Would have been a good crowd there that day (probably about what you'd expect for the women's).
yeah had the same thought. Seemed like a big enough ground.

This is the info provided by the AFL website on the actual ground. Can't help feel that this could be a disaster logistics wise and could generate a bit of bad pr if a big crowd rocks up. Just don't try to park in the Eatons Hill hotel park for anyone going, you'll be fined and possibly towed in no time.

There must be a good reason why South Pine was chosen ahead of Yeronga, although it's not obvious to me. Some commercial agreement perhaps?
I'd say its probably related to this article http://www.aflq.com.au/18922-2/

The Aspley Hornets Australian Football Club has unveiled new facilities at their South Pine Precinct home in Brendale.

Treasurer and Minister for Sport, Curtis Pitt said the Queensland Government had contributed $1,000,000 towards the major upgrade project under Round 1 of the Get Playing Plus program.

“Stage one of this project included the construction of a senior AFL field, field lighting, roads, car parking, pathways, irrigation and landscaping.

“Aspley Hornets is the largest AFL club on the north side of Brisbane with 440 junior members, 27 youth girls (under 15) and 25 registered senior female members.

“The club also boasts three senior male teams, plus one team in the North East Australian Football League (NEAFL), with the senior women’s team set to run out onto the newly completed fields for the first time this Saturday 30 April, against Pine Rivers.

“This is an exciting day for women’s AFL with the precinct considered as a centre for female football, providing top class facilities for women’s sport, showcased with two Queensland Amateur Women’s Football Association (QWAFA) games scheduled.

“I would like to congratulate Moreton Bay Regional Council, Aspley Hornets and the state body, AFL Queensland , for getting this project off the ground,” Mr Pitt said.

“One in every three Queenslanders playing Australian Football is female, with over 71,000 women and girls playing some form of the game last year,” said AFL Queensland CEO Dean Warren.

“Female participation increased by over 37 per cent in 2015 with figures set to boom again this year.

“This facility is vital in supporting this growth and providing community access, and we thank the Queensland Government for their continued support.”

Most of the problems with the suburban grounds is lack of facilities. Temp stands are ok for a GF or something, but week to week you need a better option. You only need to cater for a few thousand i think, but that is enough to cause issues with parking.

Really need an all purpose small ground with stands that can hold about 5k that has the facilities to boot.

The space is there at Brendale. It depends on if they allocate some of it for parking and get some simple stands in.

Shade in QLD is also always going to be an issue. They need to do something for this. The grounds arent that far from strathpine train station but not walkable. You'd still need a bus and i cant see a great set up with buses happening.

Really Brendale has the same issues as Burpengary. Getting to and from is hard and it is open and hot. Think both grounds have a lot of potential, but you will struggle getting 5k crowds to thinks that dont support it.

Typical of most building projects lately really. Build things with no thought into the roads, traffic and connecting infrastructure around it.
