While Yeronga provides some good shade and a bank, I'd seriously doubt it could hold 5-6,000. I've been to a few finals out there and according to an article I just read, the 2012 grand final had a crowd of "almost 3,000". I was there that day and it was packed. I've also been to finals at a few of the other grounds and I doubt they'd hold many more.

The simple fact is that other than Burpengary (miles away from anything and zero shade) there's not a ground in South East Queensland that caters for a crowd of over 3,000 other than the gabba or metricon. We need one (ideally with our training base attached), and have for years. Hopefully this shambles on the weekend makes the AFL and the government realise that it's actually a need and they finally put their hand in their pockets.

Edit: there might be a couple of grounds down the coast that hold more than 3,000, but I don't know them very well.

THE Lions have asked fans for patience saying the unexpected interest in the new women’s league could create teething problems at Brisbane’s first home game.

The Lions had already sought unsuccessfully to have the game moved to the Gabba and on Tuesday made a late bid to switch to the Burpengary site that has hosted AFL pre-season games in recent years.

The match against Collingwood will be held on Saturday at the new $10m facility at Brendale which holds just 3000.

The Lions expect double that.

There is expected to be adequate parking and organisers have increased food and water orders to ensure there is sufficient catering, however there is no shade nor any grandstands.

The bigger problem is there is no hill so people who do not get front row standing area will have restricted viewing.

Lions CEO Greg Swann said the ground was first class but there would be some viewing issues for spectators.

“You will need to get there early and there will be some who will come and will be a bit disappointed with the view they get,’’ he said.

“That will be fixed in the future but at this stage, that’s how it is.

“It is a ripping facility, the surface is incredible, but the success of the competition has exceeded everyone’s expectations.’’

Lions star Tayla Harris says athletes such as herself who have played the game all their lives were not surprised by its success.

The Lions marquee signing received a Round 2 Rising Star nomination for her starring role in the Lions’ 13-point victory over Fremantle in Perth.

“As players we have always thought people just have to wait and see,’’ she said.

“It was frustrating before we had played having people critique us, it is not going to be any good and that sort of stuff.

“It was so frustrating having to wait so long to actually play Round 1 but when we did I think people, they just had to accept it.

“My favourite thing to say is if you are an actual football fan there is no reason why you wouldn’t want to watch more footy.

“If you don’t like the women’s game fair enough but you are not a footy fan.’’

Video games are a team aren't they?
Saturday is more about the venue than it is the game. South Pine is the shiny new government funded community development, and deals were done a long time ago. They would have looked at this last year with the idea that "We can get the Hornets there, NEAFL and the new AFLW".
Now is their first real event, to turn people away will be a poor look, but it would look far worse to cancel. They will still be able to promote a packed out huge event after the fact, with photos of big crowds behind someone cutting a ribbon, I expect. Contractually, who knows what is in place, but getting NEAFL and AFLW games there would have been a bit of a coup for someone.
this feels like the real story. I've worked enough with local government to know that the egos are just as big even if the stakes are smaller. They won't let go of this ongoing bit of kudos for MBRC easily. Has to move for the last two games but will be a hard fight.

Eatons Hill Hotel will be the winners on the day.

That's part of community adult football and a great part of it, one of the reasons why the old suburban grounds in all the states are popular with the punters with this new comp, that and people showing their support to womens footy.

Win win for footy and local business.

Shame a big enough ground is not available around the inner suburbs in Brisbane with some local watering holes within walking distance.

Defense still wins games - we're currently second on the AFLW ladder for points against, but only 6th for points for. Adelaide and Carlton are 3 - 4 goals ahead of us on average, which given the low scoring in the season thus far, doesn't bode well for us. I know you can only beat who you play, but I think our ladder position is a little inflated. GWS has coughed up 13 more goals than us over the past 3 weeks, so I think that we should have their measure this weekend, but if we're to be any hope of a finals appearance, we need to get some more potency up forward.

While I agree to a point I do tend to think that given we've played in driving rain as well as an absolute gale for 2 of our 3 matches, we're probably not quite as bad as those figures would lead you to believe. Still I do think we need to be a bit more attacking especially given the potency of our tall forwards.

Does anyone know exactly what the girls do after the end of the season? Can't have a 8 month preseason! While I'm thinking about it - will there be a trade week? When is the next draft?

After the season it's back to state league football. Comps like the VFL-W kick off in May, so I'm imagining the QWAFL starts in late April/early May??

QWAFL starts the first week of April, but I think all the AFLW players have to have a mandatory break (I'm not sure how long) before they can play

Despite being 4-0 it still feels like the side isn't really considered a contender by anyone except AFLW players themselves.

We went in to the season being considered as spoon contenders despite there being absolutely no form line for people to make those judgments, and it sort of still feels like people are waiting for us to fall away, whereas Adelaide who are also 4-0 are considered genuine contenders.

Typical of being away from the footy heartland sadly.

Maybe they're just assuming the Brisbane Heat trajectory is contagious?

I reckon it's residual low expectations because of the men's team, despite the fact that the lists obviously have nothing to do with each other. I suspect there is a bit of 'Brisbane are a complete basket-case from top to bottom' going on, influencing people's perceptions of the team beyond this clear line of good form they are having.

I just worry that with their day jobs, then training, travelling etc, our girls will run out of puff as time goes on..

..that's a helluva workload to carry week in, week out..

In theory the other teams should have the same problem (although Melbourne based clubs obviously travel less for 'away' games, and it is only a short season so hopefully that helps

Plus 80% of the team is from Qld - the rugby state. The great unknown from up north that can't possibly "football"!!!!
Yes but in girls footy we are the 2nd strongest state. Just don't tell anyone. What till next year if we keep the qld talent we will be a powerhouse
