The lions are going to be even better than last year, the loss of matty clarke will hurt us a bit, but with recruit stafan carey along with jarrod molloy and vossy being injury free that will counter the loss. They are not guaranteed a premiership win, but certainly a grand final berth.

Robert, i saw them on fri night .... they looked very good for this time of year .... so lets hope so

No Keating no Brisbane

Friday night shows Brisbane lacks good big guys and most of the running players are athletes rather than footy players and need to be in top fitness to be effective in short you need all of Lynch, Leppisch and Keating to be playing or things won't look so good

Last year demonstrated that we didnt need big guys to be one of the best in the competition. This year we have carey and keating to help out.
What hurt us most last year was losing our three best little guys right before the finals.
Our game plan dpoesnt revolve around big guys which allows it to be intresting and entertaining to watch- geez who wants another Nth melbourne, where its just kick it long to the tall timber, when you can have teamwork, speed and agility that the small men can provide.

To say no Keating No Lions is being undeducated.
If you remember back to last year, Keating had injury problems and Clarke was out of form, and it wasnt the tall timber that the Lions relied on, it was the small guys who make up most of the Lions team.We made it to the finals, could have gone further if we werent missing three- four of our most vital players, lost before or very soon into the game- Scott, MaCrae, Voss and Black.
Who really wants to see another North Team- whos game plan is just kick it long, sure it wins them games <as does there Thuggery- alias Mick Martyn> but it does get pretty boring. Id rather see a Lions team that uses the most of their speed, agility and ability to turn defence into attack.
Our most dangerous attacking men last year, were our small goalsneaks, Macrae, Black, and our powerhouse Molloy. It didnt seem like the Lions had much trouble winning games or scoring the 2nd highest for average last year, whilst keepin the best defensive record in tack. Sure tall timber works for some teams, but obviously others just go fine without them.

After note: We also have Carey in the side this year adding some height, and our usuals Matt Kennedy, Keating, the Two rookie rucks, MacDonald and Knobel.

Carey is a dud

Brisbane is an over rated side

It is full of athletes not footballers, who are terrible players if not fully fit.

They already have injury problems and not enough depth in big guys

Now Reggi, judging by those comments, I think you've been hangin' around with Archie & Jughead a tad too long.

Would you call Molloy an athlete ahead of a footballer? Or Voss? Or C.Scott? Or Lambert?

Then of course there are 'athletes' in the side, the like of Akermanis, Black, Lappin, White and so on...but they're blummin' brilliant footballers too!

You goose!

They finished bottom the year before with those guys Lappin white Akermanis black playing because they are athletes not footy players and they are shocking when they aren't full fit.

IMHO they will finish in the bottom half of the eight and not threaten the flag

Ditto to what reggi said, Carey is a dud he got the flick from the swans who arn't exactly flooded by big man talent..what does that tell you about Carey.
Brisbane would have to be a chance this year
with Voss,Lynch fit, good young talent like Headland coming through, they are a very good allround team.Their main problem is the back line..lepper is ok but daryl white isnt good enough to play on the W Carey's,Lloyds,Hirds etc and they dont have anyone else..if they get a good draw in the finals they are a chance.

Well lucky for us that Lynch is fit hey? And Voss is having a better pre-season and more fit now than he was when he played so well in 1999. We must be in with a chance.

I have to disagree about the reasoning of why Carey won't be an advantage. The exact same could have been said about Hueskes last year - not a viable argument after Hueskes' performance last year.

There is no way in hell I could ever believe that the Lions are without a chance this year at the moment. To say White doesn't have the talent is ludicrus - he HAS the TALENT, just not the CONSISTANCY.

Give the Lions and inch in 2000, they will take a mile. Mark my word on that one!!

With or without a full backline, the Lions were unluckly to loose pretty much their entire (and dominant) midfield before and early in the North final.

Essendon were unlucky not to kick straight - or more to the point, unlucky that Carlton were dobbing everything one the same day (Whitnall's last qtr goal was just BS). But it was hardly a woeful choker performance. Carlton played above themselves and got the breaks as well - that's footy.

North were lucky not to play Brisbane at full strength or Essendon at all.

The best two sides last year finished 3 and 4. I think this year will vindicate that.

Personally I'm hoping for a Ess v Carl Ansett Cup GF and two Ess v Carl finals with Ess winning all five games for the year....

All I can say after last nights match, is role on the REAL season.
If a fully fit North minus only Mc Kernan and Capuano can only beat Brisbane by 1 goal. Brisbane will have North on toast in the proper season.
North replaced Mc Kerna with an experienced ruck in Burton.
Brisbane has Voss and Leppa returning after injury. They were minus White, B Voss, Carey, B Scott, Lambert, Keating. All 1st team players.
Brisbane were not disgraced just underdone.
Leppa did brilliantly on Carey.
