I can't explain my dislike for the type of person Eddie is. In one sentence he comes across as the saviour of the AFL 'National' competition with his comments but only a few words later he reinforces his true thoughts on what he thinks about interstate clubs that are becoming too powerful for his team to cope with.

I don't like him one bit & the sooner he takes his grubby mitts off any AFL decision making process (equalisation), the better the competition will benefit. He is biased & is only interested in more gain for his club but at the expense of any other club. He wants us in the comp but only as cannon fodder for his team to put on a show for the adoring Collingwood members. He shoves comments down our throats such as the pulling power Collingwood have in games. He forgets & refuses to highlight any advantages that Collingwood has benefitted from (government funded state of the art training facilities) & shouts down anyone that questions him on air about any suspect Collingwood related thing that may have happened by belittling another club & talking them down. He has an unfair advantage in the media where he forces his way on programs where he can continue to run his propaganda war against anything that may be a threat to his club.

-When we recruited Nick Davis, he warned our club that he will fight tooth & nail to have the CoLA removed. (I'm glad it will be gone).
- He came out with 'kind' words for the Bulldogs saying he wanted them to survive in our comp only to come out earlier this year questioning them travelling to Arizona in the pre season saying they were spending money they haven't got.
-A few years ago he made a suggestion we try & help ourselves by recruiting more NSW players. We now have our own academy & he is attacking that.

Eddie doesn't want a national competition. He wants a 'lions versus christians' competition where his team can't lose & are the main attraction.

You are a fraud & a racist Eddie & your true colours came out with your King Kong comments.
You are not a very well respected person at the Swans behind the scenes but they will never attack you publicly because you are a vindictive natured bully that will seek revenge.
Umm duh? Of course Eddie will try to parlay everything for collingwoods benefit. It's up to the other clubs to call him out for it. Yes its hard with his media profile but other club presidents have similar ( James Brayshaw) but he is pretty quiet (as far as trying to make a north-centric agenda)

Rest of the discussion aside I find it interesting that when people talk of success they only really talk of premierships won over a period to push their point. For me winning a premiership comes down to a whole bunch of stuff going your way or not over 2-3 weeks at the end of a season. When I think of a successful period I tend to look at finals campaigns in general because at the end of the day in finals one bad day can send you home, but a whole season of work is more representative of how good a team actually is. One could argue that in recent times you have to make top 4 to be a chance, which tends to re-inforce the view I take given that this gives you a second chance because stuff happens in finals

If you look over recent history its interesting to compare finals history.

The Brisbane era in which we won the 3 flags we had 6 years of making finals. Interesting to compare that to a few other teams with good finals histories over a period of time

Collingwood - currently 8 and counting
Geelong - 7 and counting
Hawthorn - 6 out of 7 years
St Kilda - 7 out of 8 years

I'm not drawing any conclusions from the above, but it is interesting how different people measure success and how that measure can put a certain spin on an argument, whichever way you're coming at it from.

I genuinely don't think money for better players can save the Lions from our current situation.

The solution is going to be some kind of system (that some people have mentioned here) that enables us to retain those 80-90% who are from interstate.

I think the Academy is great. It's a good system to develop young players, and we just have to match the bids of other clubs to get that player. Seriously, not a lot of superstars come from QLD so Eddie's got a few questions to answer that he doesn't get to see the palm cards for.

Better cash management, better promotion, better retention and better staff is going to see us rise to the top again. I don't want to do it with COLA. I drink enough of it already.

Posted this early in this thread and stand by it. The Lions under no circumstances should receive priority picks. Lions fans have tasted a threepeat. And it wasn't that far back.

Help off-field...absolutely support that.

... there are issues at the club that the AFL definitely needs to address. As part of equalisation, maybe they have can provide consulting services on two fronts:
- finance and administration
- coaching and player development

These are the two areas that clubs need to be strong in. And the two areas that the Lions have probably been weakest in over the last decade. The AFL needs to provide some assistance so send in some experienced people (at little to no cost) who can help on those two fronts. And yeah possibly provide you with a retention allowance again.

Under no circumstances however do I support any priority picks or such like. Develop guns under your academy. There should be some fantastic kids coming through.
...

On a related note, given that there are zero WA players coming throught the draft this year, why isn't this being looked at?

I've noticed eddie whinging again, so does this happen often? If not what's changed? Is this likely to reoccur? Is it a one off?

I'm amazed that eddie is using this to attack zones in the frontier considering if it's a trend, we should be looking at encouraging zoning in WA rather then raiding NSW and QLD.

I have no idea what's going on with youth development in WA, but if it's as bad as fat Ed is making out surely offering academy's to the two WA teams should be looked at.

We don't want a footy state consistently producing 0 rookies.

Supporter group The Lions’ Roar today has released a graphic showing that since 1996,the Lions have lost more than half of their first-round draft picks since 1996 – 10 out of 19 – to “homesickness”. The beneficiaries of the go-home factor have been mostly powerful Victorian clubs – Carlton, Collingwood and Geelong.

Part of that has got to be something fundamentally not right at the club. Brisbane is not that bad a place to live with the weather, beaches and women. Sure they are a bunch of rednecks but when you're a young bloke going for a surf in beautiful weather through winter and then jagging a bird on the beach you don't care about that other stuff. There has got to be something within the club itself that is a common denominator as to why you are losing so many young footballers.

I live in Sydney and have exposure to the Swans and the kids love it up here. I now see the GWS kids occasionally and they too are enjoying the Sydney lifestyle. Brisbane as a young bloke can be very pleasant so something's just not right.

p.s. redneck line is a windup

I think the problem is believing Eddie. I guarantee there will be WA kids drafted this year.

Sydney and (inner) Western Sydney, have a couple of big bonuses over Brisbane:
  1. Much better lifestyle - Brisbane may be warmer, but I'd rather live on the Gold Coast
  2. Facilities are better located to where players live - Brisbane built their new training facility in the middle of nowhere, it's like St Kilda building at Seaford.
  3. Closer to family and friends. A lot of people have friends who move to Sydney for various purposes, it is also somewhere your family and friends are happy to come for a few days to catch up and cheer you up. Brisbane doesn't have that appeal.
  4. Beach lifestyle, Sydney has beaches available for down time to do some surfing or relaxing, Brisbane has nothing like that.
So when you are getting recruited a player would look at the following positives:

Victorian, WA, SA club - good facilities, good lifestyle, footy town plenty of football support around the club in past players etc to help.
Sydney, GWS - good sydney lifestyle, good facilities close to where you'd live, annonmity, well run clubs.
Gold Coast - good lifestyle, good facilities near where you'd live, well run club.

Brisbane - annonimity.

Brisbane just isn't an attractive place to live for a young bloke moving interestate. You don't have the outdoor recreational lifestyle you can get in inner Sydney or the Gold Coast.

Screw them. Sink , swim or relocate...
Thats not going to happen. They are a strategic club in a city of over 2mill. That alone will ensure their existance. But it doesnt mean they have traction in that marketplace. I'm not sure how they will get that market penetration. If after winning 3 on the trot they never got it, I dont think they ever will. You cant keep gifting them flags just to give them some presence in Brisbane.

This is going to be the issue with all clubs in NSW & QLD. With COLA set to be scrapped in the future, the AFL needs to come up with a way of funding all four of those clubs when they are struggling on the field. Brisbane has shown that band wagoner supporters don't suddenly become die hards just because you win three flags.

Private ownership?

Really the AFL need a much better revenue sharing model because once a new stadium is built in WA there's going to be some rich WA, SA and some of the VIC clubs and then some poor VIC clubs and Northern state clubs.

And if the clubs can't spend equally on footy departments and salary cap then all the other advantages that come with being a rich club will just consume the small clubs.

Brisbane are in big trouble, maybe they need a higher living away allowance like gold coast or gws to lure some big names!

Private ownership in aus doesn't work, NRL clubs operate on a fraction of the budget of nrl clubs, it's mostly failed. Eddelsten failed (although despite what the Prick says he never owned the licence) and even the A-League is struggling with two clubs having already failed.

Luring over 'big names' is the last thing we need atm. Start with rejuvenating the board, having Swann as CEO should certainly help. Finding an adequate place for a training facility and head in the right track financially. Set a solid foundation and the rest will follow.

They will if Collingwood draft someone from WA. It won't be the first time or the last he's got his foot stuck in his mouth.
We 've lost players to the go home factor, funnily enough, one to Sydney.

But there is no way to counter it without going overboard and creating an imbalance the other way. They could try and halve the concessions, maybe that will work but I doubt it. Clubs will find a way to Rort it. I believe all allowances should be taken away from the clubs and if they have to be paid, the AFL pay it on a case by case basis. That way it's never factored into salary caps and it's never guaranteed.

Your dead right we can't, we were ******* robbed by the $650,000 extra in their salary cap, and 2 ******* awful umpire decisions in the last few minutes.

We don't want an advantage, we just want an even playing field. A fair chance at winning, how you gunna feel if cola robs you of back to back this year?walk in my shoes before you judge me

And it's not just Victorian supporters, check out the post from the WA and SA supporters. You know, the other states where AFL can be king WITHOUT premierships being handed to them on a platter

Collingwood supporter calling for an even playing field? Pls

Please explain, where did we ever get an unfair advantage? Anykind of ****ing advantage, shit we can't even win the free kick count. Ever.

Actually we did a couple of weeks ago, we were all shocked!

So you mean how the cola works paid for and distributed by the AFL completely separate from the salary cap?

Have you seen the Lexus Centre? Do you know what third party deals are?

Is it still called the Lexus Centre? Whoever sponsors it anyway probably pays more for the right than all the sponsors together at the Lions.

Anyway it's all about the money. Off field spending.
