Completely true. If you count third party deals I have no doubt a club like Collingwood would easily pay its players more than anyone else.

Must admit I thought Swans were way ahead in this area. I have heard that Jack and Goodes are getting in the vicinity of $500K p.a each for promoting the game in Sydney. Do you know if true?

what a lot of supporters from footy states forget is that there are NO third party deals at the lions. It is not and never will be an even competition when this is common. COLA retention allowance whatever you call it is reallly only evening an uneven situation. It is a moot point as the lions for the last few years have only paid 70% of the cap to start with. How would you feel as a supporter if you knew at the start of each and every season your team has no hope of winning how long would you continue to support them.

The AFL is not responsible for income beyond the salary cap. The garbage about 3rd party deals just that... garbage.

Clubs that are well run find income streams for partners and a whole range of other benefits. Brisbane has been well known for this in the past too. Incomes that have no bearing on the salary cap. So forget this crap about the impact of 3 rd party income streams.

Just get your club in order. Because when you had your cap concession and were doing well, the 3rd party income opportunities were the same as now. Very thin on the ground. The players took reduced pay to keep the list together and the extra cap was used to get quality players. So it wasn't about the money, it was about the success.

3rd party opportunities is the biggest furphy going around. Well run clubs with a great environment is what keep players.

AFL will never in our life times be the #1 sport in QLD (or NSW).
I think the best thing the AFL can do for teams in those states is to give the clubs exclusive rights to players in those states, like the father/son rules.
So those clubs have first dibs on all players in their state.
Then the AFL can help with administration and sponsorship.

I agree with all that. But it won't make a bit of difference to the perception that this is an advantage given to Northern States that is not afforded to the remaining states.

The AFL compromise way too much on their FIXture and all they are doing is making the big teams bigger and other clubs are being left on perpetual life support - living pay check to pay check. It doesn't need to be this way

There will always be big clubs and little clubs. They can fix the draw so it is rotating over a certain amount of years. This will never happen. Equalisation is a myth.

Thanks to fantastic coaching and administration we haven't have significant down times for almost 20 years. Have a look at what was happening when we were stinking it up in the early 90s.

Melbourne were worse than Brisbane and they lost a grand total of 1 draftee, and that took a ridiculously large contact. Brisbane have basically had their last two drafts wiped out.

If you had a competition with absolutely no involvement from the AFL and their attempts at equalisation, we would not have an equal competition. There are huge inherent advantages for certain clubs.

I have no problem with administration and sponsorship help for expansion clubs

Melbourne lost a heap of players, but it was because we were a poor footy club.

The same thing is now happening to Brisbane, but they've already won three games so they're not that bad. It will be good for them to spend a half a decade on the bottom, the club needs to realize that the AFL have stopped waving their magic wand for them. Eventually they'll work out that they'll have to do it for themselves.

Voss going nuts trying to build a ready made team didn't help. I think he tried to do what the Swans do but his lack of experience and method backfired. Probably the club administration also lacked know how. Will be interesting to see how they approach this year's trade period.

And now we get back to the root of the problem - the AFL's interference in trying to make an "equal" competition.

It's artificial equalness. We see it when we say the AFL won the premierships when Brisabane had their period of domience in the early 2000's, when Sydney won a couple of years ago.
We're saying it now for the future when the Suns and Giants will share the competition's top spot for the next 10 years.

The problem is that the AFL is striving for an equal and even competition (eg spending cap off field) while rigging it on the other hand ti make maximum money (eg FIXture).

So in Footscray's case the AFL will weigh up what it means for Footscray to be good rather than Brisbane. I'd say you'd lose that wager

This policy that the AFL has, of a vision whereby all teams at round 1 have a chance to win, is a mirage. A quick look at any sporting league around the world will show it is simply not possible. Barcelona and Real Madrid....the EPL....Celtic and Rangers....the Yankees.....Bayern Munich...the list goes on and on.....the reality is, as another poster pointed out, there will always be big teams and little teams.....the fact that so many people only participate in their team when they are winning is the culture that needs addressing. I'd much rather be a little team that stands on it's own two feet and fights week in, week out, year in, year out and occasionally shoves it up the big teams by legitimately winning a flag every 20 years than be a spectre raised by the AFL to succeed when they need success in a specific market (read: broadcast deals).

It's akin to Mongolia complaining to the IOC that it's unfair they have never won a medal in swimming and asking for special consideration. If Queensland sucks in producing enough AFL footballers, that's a development issue, not a football (in)equality issue.

COLA is a blight on the AFL administration. You don't have to be Tony Abbott to see that an extra $1M in salary cap is an out and out rort.
