Q. Why did 5 promising young players leave Brisbane last year
A. Because the club was piling up in debt and pity, internal fighting, firing the coach, not progressing up the ladder, had a culture of players leaving over the last 5 or more years including Bradshaw, Rischitelli, Clark, Henderson and Brennan of which plenty were forced out due to the Fev deal.

Sure it was much easier for them to leave due to the gome home factor but it can't be used as an excuse at all. Once Brisbane supporters embrace the idea that it's up to them as a club to not let guys leave they'll see less and less leave and wont have to worry about it.

Bradshaw was finished. Wanted more than a one year deal, the Lions wouldn't offer it which was fair enough and he got offered a ridiculous deal.

Riska was already in talks with GC before he was offered to Carlton. If Bradshaw hadn't been offered a ridiculous contract from Sydney he may have gone to Carlton and the riska/Bradshaw for Fev trade would have gone ahead and it wouldn't have hurt us as much after Fev left.

Clark left Brisbane because of personal issues. This has become clear since he retired that he needed to go home to sort himself out.

Brennan had no enthusiasm to play footy. Wanted more money so he could retire and enjoy his life more.

The Fev trade didn't hurt us nearly as much as non-Brisbane supporters think.

The go home 5 left for various reasons. From the clubs POV they were mainly because the Lions couldn't offer the off-field support or the development that other clubs could. There is also a degree of softness when it comes to those players.

No idea what this means. With the AFL's handouts they've helped to support them more and hired more development coaches which will go part of the way in helping our retention of young talent.

Never should have sacked voss

He had them playing decent footy, and they were on the up

What is needed, a complete overhaul of their administration, including the entire coaching department
I'd go as far as offering up the team for sale to the qld government

This. They really shot themselves in the foot with this move. Sacking Voss in the hope of getting Roos....seriously??

This thread sums it up it seems.

No one is interested in the Lions.
Except for those supporters of clubs that are in expansion markets there has been very little interest/support/acknowledgement that the Lions need or warrant help.

I'm disappointed as the Lions are an important part of the competition and the history of the competition

And its easy to see why... I am a dockers fan. Brisbane have at least won a flag, My team has not. Brisbane have at least kicked 3 goals tonight. I remember going to AAMI stadium to see freo take on the crows in round 15 2009. Freo kicked 1.7.13. Did the AFL help us then? No. Freo in 2008 and 2009 finished 14th with 6 wins and 16 losses and we didnt get a priority pick. We didnt need one. Then again other teams have struggled.

-Port were crap from 2008-2012 look where they are now?

-Eagles were crap from 2008-2010 then made finals in 2011 and 2012.

-Carlton had their barren run from 2002-2008 then Made finals from 2009-2011.

Do you see the trend here? Teams have crap periods, Teams have good periods. Its the way it is.

Mate - it's after 1am here. I've had a few beers and have had a couple of whisky's so apologise for my lack of salubriousness.

Brisbane are in a very bad place and they are in a market more sensitive than Freo and Vic/SA/WA teams are.
In a nutshell that is why they deserve help when you didn't and don't

Back to Q3 in qualifying in Austria

3 flags in the 2000's as a direct result of assistance from the league while we have clubs starved of success for a century and counting? It's a good thing Freo, WCE and the Crows can square their shit away otherwise you'd think the expansion from the VFL was a waste of time that's just draining resources from the heartland of the sport.

Yep. Brisbane need some AFL backed support, but nothing radical yet imo. Some funds into football department, and AFL help in securing administration types (even if it means poaching a rugby admin/identity for exposure).

even if you don't believe the lions need some ongoing retention allowance (in the face of clear evidence that they do) How can anyone say they don't deserve the same if not more compensation as the dee's got from the AFL in the past few years.

It's a god damn joke that the league is quite happy to bail out the demons in a city that loves footy, yet snobs it's nose at brisbane a town with the least backing of AFL supporters. they deserve and require more compo then anybody.

He doesn't seem to be good with people though as his players couldn't leave the club fast enough. Voss's coaching style seemed to scare them away.
That bad sounds like Hitler surely he cant be that bad.

I think the downfall started in 2010 when Brennan, Rischitelli and Sherman all left. 2 guys went to the New formed suns and 1 went to the bulldogs. So that was 3 guys that were around 24-26 years old with 100-120 games under the belt. That would improve Brisbane a fair bit right now.

Melbourne were in a similar position 12 months ago and traded a 2nd round pick for an ex crow and got a 31 year old free agent from the bulldogs.

I dont think the lions need a priority pick. They do need to trade their 2nd round pick for a fringe player and get a couple of 30 year old free agents to help them in the short term.

Yes they are a queensland based club but surely there are some queensland locals that might be worth taking a punt on in the National draft or rookie draft.

The down fall started when Voss used Henderson and Richitelli as trade bait and snagged one Fevola and selection of spuds. Henderson is that exact sort of player we need. He would be so vital to us with Brown retiring. Got to love Voss' parting gift to the club in having 5 young guns leave under his watch.

Watch the episode of 'On The Couch' with Voss to find out why he was sacked. The Go Home 5, Polec in particular were fond of Voss.

In hindsight it was the wrong move. We were in with a chance to get Roos until the AFL stepped in though.

I still think if voss as still the coach Brissy will be better off than they are now on feild.Maybe some of those players left because he was not the coach and thought this club is fuuuu they have no coach no clear direction perfect time for some to leave for some and perfect time for cluds to come sniffing around.

Didn't help at the time but Rischitelli would be the only one of the 3 still on the list had he stayed - and even then midfield depth isn't really their major problem.

One of the greatest teams 10-15 years ago. Now they have hit rock bottom. Many teams struggle and struggle for so many years. Teams like Hawthorn, Sydney, Collingwood, and Geelong will continue to have success. This better change in a few years time.

Not a coincidence that the inclusion of GWS and GC have prolonged their stay at the top.
