If we had the Olympics in Melbourne the venues would be
MCG main stadium, Rod Laver Pool, Hisense Velodrom, Margaret Court, MSAC Sate Netball and Hokey centre for the Court sports and Gymnastics, Golf at Royal Melbourne, Rugby and Soccer at Etihad, AMMI Park, Simonds Stadium (maybe also some group games in Ballarat) We need a rowing basin but that is it. I get that money will need to be spent on the Village and refurbishing some of these venues to bring them up to the standard required. I also acknowledge that transport links will have to improve but seeings that we are the most livable city in the world they must not need as much work as others.
Also the Tennis could be at Kooyong.

The cost of the Sydney Olympics

and the spend on the infrastructure - Sydney had bugger all before they won the Games bid

going by memory, weather is 1/3 of 1/5 of the ratings points in the reports, and Melbourne was too cold and wet, while Sydney would be too wet. i never checked Brisbane.

Im against the whole "its Brisbane turn" which Coates is going on about. it should be whoever gets the governments supports turn and has the best bid, outside direct AOC interference.

In saying that, if Brisbane can rally all of SE Queensland for the bid, build on the 2018 Gold Coast games as a dress rehearsal, their is a strong chance that by 2030's they will have the strongest bid. the region has 3 mil people now, but u think it will slowly close the gap to Melbourne's 4.4 mil, just like Queensland is likely to do to Victoria.

The IOC are trying to decentralize the games a little, to lower costs. a SE Queensland bid, with Brisbane at its heart could easily work.

Nagambie has a very good rowing course, so too does Ballarat on Lake Wendouree (hosted 1956 rowing) so one of these would be used. Royal Melbourne for golf also.

Soccer would need to be spread out throughout the country due to the number of games. Rugby could be played at AAMI Park.

Biggest thing holding back a Brisbane/SE Queensland bid is a main stadium, you need a 65,000 seat stadium as a minimum. Gabba can't be expanded to that number physically due to constraints on space. Suncorp doesn't have a big enough playing surface to allow for the athletics track to be built and also can't be expanded.

Carrara would need to be completely reconfigured to get to that size as you can't do anything at the northern end of the ground or you end up underwater, so the stadium needs to either rotate to run parallel to the main round or move it back towards the main road. Carrara also has another problem, foundations, it is built on old swamp/floodplain right next to the river, to build a 70,000+ stadium there is going to cost an absolute truckload of money, would be cheaper to build a brand new 70,000 seat stadium in Brisbane, but then who is going to use it afterwards?

Perth will hold the Olympics before Brisbane.

How does not having a main stadium not built before the final vote to choose a host city hold you back?? Sydney, Beijing and London did not have a main stadium when they won the bid for their games. You have 7 years - ok 6 years and 10 months to build and complete it. Rio has the Maracana which was going thru a massive refurbishment for the world cup so that looked good for a bid from a poor country (GDP/head poor) that they had one. Tokyo is smashing down their existing national Olympic stadium in 2015 and spending around $1bil USD on a complete rebuild and using it for 2019 rugby world cup and then the following year for the Olympics.

Building a new stadium in New York or Chicago or Boston isnt going to be a factor counting against the yanks getting the games.

I honestly think Brisbane is too small to host the Olympics, at under 2 million I would say it would have to be the smallest city to ever host the olympics. Being a sydneysider myself I would love to see it here again in my lifetime (was too young to properly appreciate it in 2000) but it seems incredibly unlikely. So I think you have to go with Melbourne, which has pretty much all of the sporting infrastructure in place and would have a huge profit margins because of this.

Ever? Melbourne was only 1.5mil in 1956. What do you reckon the population of ST Lious was in 1904, Stockholm in 1912, Antwerp in 1920, Amsterdam in 1928 and Montreal in 1976 was?

I think you need to visit the ABS site and their population section. Greater Brisbane is 2.2 mil - the Gold Coast will host events and provide accommodation for visitors is 600k and the Sunshine Coast once again will host events and has accommodation is 300k. When the vote is taken in 2021 there will be another 200k living in SE Qld and 400k in 2028.

Id love Sydney to host it again in 2028 /32 but John Coates knows the IOC will not vote to return to Sydney or Melbourne. They aren't that good to get 2 Olympics.

But all cities were a lot smaller then

they look at how modern the bid is. paris didn't get the olympics partly because they were going to use old run down stadiums with a bit of refurbishment. brisbane needs a new stadium, a new aquatics center,
No they need a new ground because they don't have a ground big enough. The IOC is trying to make the Olympics more affordable for the host city. For example if it was to come to Melbourne the would be happy to use a refurbished G

SMH reporter Phil Lutton in his article and on SEN this arvo, reckons Brisbane / SE Qld bid is almost in the bag after this Olympics insider website said it will be recommended tomorrow to the IOC Executive board

Queensland's bid to host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games could receive a potentially significant boost tomorrow when it is expected that it will be recommended to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board that the Australian state is installed as the preferred candidate.

The IOC's Future Host Summer Commission, chaired by Norway's Kristin Kloster Aasen, has been studying proposals from several cities and regions but has been most impressed by Queensland's bid, insidethegames understands.

If the Executive Board accept the recommendation, then exclusive negotiations are set to be opened with Australian officials with a view to putting Queensland forward to the IOC Session to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2032 if they go well.

It had been hoped this could be done as soon at this year's planned IOC Session on the eve of the rearranged Olympics in Tokyo in July, but with the coronavirus pandemic still causing problems with the planning of the event, this now appears unlikely.

Any decision to position Queensland as the preferred bidder, however, will leave several other cities disappointed, particularly Doha.................................

Australia looks all but certain to host another Olympic Games, with reports that the Brisbane bid for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be installed as the preferred candidate by the International Olympic Committee as early as Wednesday night.

Respected Olympic news website Inside the Games said the Queensland bid for 2032 has been the standout and the IOC’s Future Host Summer Commission will recommend it to the executive board, which includes the Australian Olympic Committee’s president and IOC vice president John Coates.

Should the board rubber-stamp the findings of the Commission, Queensland will continue as the sole negotiators with the IOC as they move towards an official unveiling as the 2032 hosts. That may happen as early as this year ahead of the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics but even if that IOC session is delayed, Australia now has the firm inside running on its rivals. “The Brisbane, Queensland candidature is following the process approved by IOC members in session in 2019,” the AOC said in a statement on Wednesday.

“We are aware that the IOC executive board will receive presentations from a number of commissions at its meeting tonight, including the Future Host Commission.

“We are not privy to that presentation but look forward to any advice in due course.”

Last month, Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner told the Herald the region was on the verge of having ‘targeted discussions’ with the IOC as they push forward with plans to lock in a host after Paris in 2024 and Los Angeles in 2028.

Why does the COVID response matter for an event that is 11 years away?
If you are making a recommendation tomorrow, then it's all part of the mix of ability a nation has to handle big events and co-ordinate big issues needing the community to follow government instructions.

It isn't the main reason why Brisbane is well regarded, but just something that gets thrown into the mix.

Historically the IOC gives a winning bid city 7 years to prepare for the games. When Paris and LA were awarded the games at the same time, for the first time ever, in July 2017, they gave Paris 7 years to prepare and LA 11 years.

It makes sense too! Australia’s COVID response put us in poll position
As a brisbanite its a disgrace the games are probably coming here. We do not have the population or the infrastructure to deliver a great games.

it should be in Melbourne which has the size and infrastructure. The best stadium on the planet thats in the middle of the city presinct will go empty whilst brisbane will be spend a fortune to build an embarrassing stadium thats not olympic standard that will make us look like a joke.

join me in protesting this event.

no olympics for south east queensland. Send it to melbourne where it belongs.

The Olympics will never be held outside the June-Sep Northern Summer window again.
Simple as that
Thats why Melbourne will never host the Olympics again.
The worlds knows it
and more importantly,the AOC knows
Its too cold and too wet for Melbourne in August
Brisbane will be sunny and 26 degrees

what this will also in my opinion but Brisbane in the same light of Sydney and Melbourne with strong reputations internationally. People will see how good Brisbane and Queensland is and it will only continue to help Queensland thrive!

Brisbane isnt thriving. It lives off thermal coal money which is drying up. Its riddled with ridiculous regulation which prevents bridges from being built across rivers causing massive bottlenecks. Its going to be a giant joke to watch thousands queing to get on a city kat just to get to the otherside of the river.

everyone within 15km of the city living in houses made of 1940s technologies and thus incredibly inferior. These houses also arent looked after with every third one looking like a murder house. foreigners will percieve brisbane is a massive poverty ridden crime zone when they walk through the inner city and see these houses. Supermakrets are banned from opening at times when people need to use them to support antique milk bars that are way too expensive, have no range and only rotting fruit and disappeared everywhere else in the 1980s. Foreigners will think its a joke they cant go to a supermarket at 7pm on a sunday or 9:30pm on a thursday.

Queenslanders are also incredibly racist. Do you think european and american networks wont discover this and publicise it to the world. The likes of pauline hanson or her next incarnation and her movement will be major stories on 60 mins and the likes during the olympics. And then ofcourse will be the white elephant stadium that we will build in an outer suburb wasting billions and showing that we have learned nothing from the past. You build the stadium in the city and for long term use. they should upgrade the gabba. Instead they will build another homebush. What a joke.
