Will lions play at Metricon for a couple seasons?

The Lions are building a training and administrative base at Springfield the AFLW team are going to their home games their. It will be finished by the time they start to knock The Gabba down. It’s 10,000 capacity on nine news Brisbane the other day they said some Olympics events would be there the capacity would have to be put up to 20,000. Maybe the Men could play games their.

The Commonwealth Games are mickey mouse they don't rank with the Olympics. Sure they get decent media coverage but they don't absolutely dominate the media landscape like the Olympics.

Why did both AFL and NRL finish their seasons 2 weeks before the Sydney Olympics started?
No major sporting competition are allowed to be played during the olympics in the host country. It’s an IOC rule.

The relevant rule that I'm aware of doesn't mention "host country". Rather: "Host City itself, its neighbourhood or in the cities hosting other competition sites or their neighbourhoods".

Test cricket was played in Leeds (where no Olympic events were held, unlike Manchester or Cardiff) during London 2012, in accordance with such a requirement.

However, for what it's worth, I think the top Brazilian soccer league continued to play matches in Belo Horizonte and Sao Paulo etc during Rio 2016 within days of hosting Olympic competition at the same venues. Perhaps "prior written approval of the IOC" was granted in those instances.

Says who? The IOC - that doesn't make it the law of the land. Most nations sports organisations don't do it because they would be stupid to compete against the Olympics - you would be drowned out.

In USA in July and August there is no NHL, NBA or NFL seasons. However MLB played thru the Atlanta games between 19th July and 4th August 1996. Euro soccer competitions are closed in July and most of August.

I'm currently in WA working and my wife and kids are at home in Vic. They haven't had power for 2 days, no school today for the kids, no hot water, no fuel, no mobile coverage, $100s of dollars of food chucked out. It's been a s**t 18 months in Vic and we're looking to move, this might get us over the line to shift to the Sunny Coast.

Very exciting.

Woooo

I'd be 64 by the time the games came around, good time to maybe be retired or semi retired and just spend 2 weeks being a sports pig. Going to an Olympics is right up the top of my bucket list.

I could spend months, doing the logistics / planning of moving around between venues and regions and getting to as much as I could. Athletics, track cycling, boxing, handball, weightlifting, maybe some shooting, maybe mountain biking.

This will be the first home Olympics I remember seeing Sydney I wasn't born for! I will be getting to as many events as I can that is for sure. Really want to go to the Opening Ceremony

Apologies if it's been posted... But what are the steps from here?

Personally I'm pumped should we get them.. I was 17 during Sydney, too young to travel solo really.. So this is my first and last chance I'd say to get to an Olympics.. Already the moment it seemed likely the missus and I said we will do all we can to go.

Also will be 49 (eek that sounds old) so still "young" enough to enjoy ourselves and see plenty

There will be a gathering of IOC members at the annual IOC session in Tokyo a couple of days before the Games kick off. They will get a presentation about the bidding process and city/cities and they will have a vote whether there should be a vote for bids, or to delay it until next year.

Historically they gave host cities 6 years, then it became 7 years to get ready to prepare for the games when having the vote for the host city.

In 2017 that changed when they decided both Paris and LA bids were so good, they would award them both hosting rights and not make one of them go thru another bidding process.

Later the IOC executives decided that Paris host 2024 and LA host 2028 and they have 11 years to prepare for the games.

In 2019 the IOC agreed to change the bidding conditions, ie regions/countries rather than a single city could host the ganes, the IOC wanted to reduce the size and cost of the games and use infrastrcure in an existing region rather than having to build most of the stuff in one city. They also said the main stadium can be smaller, orginally 60k then it was allowed to be 50k.

Brisbane is the preffered bid and at this stage will be the only city to win hosting rights unopposed if they decide to award the hosting rights during the 20-21st July IOC session. The good money is on a vote happening and no delays until next year's IOC session.

This wiki page gives a good summary how it came down to Brisbane/SE Qld becoming the preferred bid and the IOC session on 20-21st July.

Well explained, the hard thing to work out is why we are wasting time and money bidding for this white elephant /junket for pollies when the rest of the world couldnt care.

On SM-G570F using BigFooty.com mobile app

So greater Brisbane could theoretically include the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast & Toowoomba?

Greater Brisbane doesn't include those areas, but the bid is a SE Qld bid, approved by the 11 relevant mayors in 2017 or 2018, the Qld and Australian government and the IOC changed their rules in 2019 to accept region bids and country bids and even joint country bids, so this is a regional bid not a city bid, accepted as such by the IOC as their preferred bid in February this year.

Regardless, are those the locations they will be hosted if we do land the onlympics in 2032?

Sunshine Coast + Brisbane + Gold Coast have venues in the bid and there is one or two events out Ipswich way.

I can’t believe they want to hold the games in late July. Middle of winter.

its fricken freezing.

why wouldn’t they do it in late September like with the Sydney games? That is the best time of year in Brisbane. Warm enough to swim but still the dry season.
huh...

its Brisbane...22 average, 3 days a month has rain.

I say that is perfect.

As some one who lives here its fricken freezing in the mornings and from the late afternoon.

the 3 hour window in the middle of the day in the sun is fine but the rest of the day I have the heater on. And I grew up living in canberra.

it’s going to ruin the outdoor Night time events and the beach volleyball. Won’t have any summer carnival spirit with people out enjoying themselves in the evening as everyone huddles inside Instead.
