Actually given the likelihood of no other club selecting Jackson Mead before Port Adelaide’s Pick 18 , which is highly likely, Port will now get 3 first round picks + Mead.
Next Year Port have F/S and NGA picks , a couple that would be highly likely to be 1st rounders and a raft of points to use.
Very shrewd trading .........unless an opposition Club pick Mead in the other 15 first round picks that Port don’t hold and on every Phantom Draft I’ve sighted that’s unlikely.

over the next 4 years we could have as many as 6 - 9 Father Son & Academy players most Midfielders (& HFF). We also have to find more midfield time for Houston, Drew, Butters, Rozee

so that could explain why we dont mind trading out our 2020 first round pick (in a compromised draft)

Port wouldn't match
That of course is the risk.......
but 2 things would happen, Port would match the bid and Port would remember that........ so that in the future Geelong could end up paying overs for one of their F/S or NGA down the track.
Knowing the Mead family , their history with Port Adelaide and particularly that Jackson’s Grandfather has just had a serious health episode, Jackson Mead chose to stay at Port to follow in his Father’s footsteps.
So Geelong might get Mead only to have him want to go home in a year or two.

Smart move by Port imo , They are going all in this year combined with the 3 talented lads from last year they are fast tracking their development and talent

Seems like we are in the minority, but this is a good deal for Port.

They maintain a greater presence in this years stronger first 20 and are strategically placed ahead of the Cats, even if they don’t move into the top 10.

They also realise that they have the assets to trade back into the first (and probably even the second) round next year during the trade window.

Port are not interested in Gould...

Gould has said that he hasn't spoken to Port Much … he has mainly spoken to the Crows & Geelong
Doesn't mean they won't, cats spoke to Jordan Clark like once then ended up frantically trying to contact him in the days before when they realised they'd be able to get him

You quite often see people say “get an extra year of development into them” when discussing trading future picks for current picks.

All it does is bring forward a player’s career. It doesn’t extend it at all or give you a greater chance at a good player.

The benefit is you get them a year earlier. The cost is they are likely to leave a year earlier.

I’m not having a go at port supporters, More just the one-sided commentary on these type of trades.

C4 do you know who Port are interested in for this years draft? Surely somethings come up for them to start playing fiddle at the top?

I would rather Joel Gardner who is on our list instead of Will Gould

Yeah I can't see it happening in any case. There are comparable players available and father son aren't treated like academy kids. Brownless we picked up with close to the last pick in the draft. Don't see a bid coming for him until it's a token late one. I was just of the opinion Port wouldn't have matched if someone did but happy to be corrected

You make an interesting point.

Teams could really clean up if other teams are desperate to trade future picks for current picks.

Getting Butters, Duursma and Rozee in a clump worked for Port last, year so why not do it again.

At 12, 16 and 18 they can afford to wait and see what falls to them. And with Mead likely going after that they are looking towards a good draft hand. They have Taj Schofield (f/s) and Lachlan Jones (nga) next year anyway so depending on where they are rated the 1st rounder may have been split anyway for points.

totally agree that the Suns will get Day …

it isn't often a young player supports them and wants to go there …

Also i can see the Suns adding to the 10 other South Australian players in the hope of creating support for Rankine & Luko (in the hope that they will both stay)
Yeah, reckon Will Gould would be right in the frame at pick 20.

It may have been mentioned, but next year there are plenty of top ranked players linked to clubs. Hence a first round pick could drift out a few positions for many clubs.
My quick guesstimation I posted on our board.
Exercise in futility.

Possible first round academy or father son kids.

Jamarra Ugle-Hagan - Bulldogs -top 5
Reef McInnes - Collingwood - top 10
Braeden Campbell - Sydney- top 15
Connor Downie - Hawthorn - top 20
Errol Gulden- Sydney - top 20

If Port hand us pick a pick in the 8 to 10 range, it might get pushed back 2, maybe 3 spots.

Bulldogs and Collingwood might trade their first round picks for two picks in the 20’s worth more points.

Sydney and Hawthorn should get their first picks in before another team bids on their academy kids.
