Brisbane's recent finals record - are they now chokers?

Their big home ground advantage may be carrying them through the season before they get found out during finals.

Still plenty of development and therefore improvement left. Coming into what will be a long premiership window.

Losing Hipwood when we did really screwed our structures over, more than people give him credit for his performances. Hes not the worlds best key forward but he provided so much to us structurally. Then we lost McStay very early against Melbourne, again throwing us in dissarray.

And then tonight AGAIN we lost Payne, our replacements replacement AND Berry, one of our key midfield rotations and STILL we only lost by a point and some very contentious calls.

I dont see us falling out of the 8 next year, how we do come finals will come down to personnel and circumstances.

Without a doubt. Losing Hipwood and McStay were massive outs and killed the structure. 68 inside 50s but weren’t able to convert those like they usually would have.

Charlie got figured out pretty quick after his good start and Andrews/Darcy have been well below their usual standards. Zorko has fallen off a cliff this last week and just to much left to too few. Cockatoo needed another pre-season which was very evident tonight as well.

2021 Brisbane (4th)

Looks pretty similar to me and Port Adelaide were regularly referred to as chokers back then. Although Port Adelaide did manage more wins in their three year period and had a better finals record at home of 2-3 vs Brisbane's 1-4. Also, Port Adelaide only had one straight sets exit whereas Brisbane have now had two.

Missing 50% of our forward line and then a 3 man bench for half the game. Insane how we only lost by 1 point in the end. That's not even including the armchair ride the Dogs got.

Again the stats will just record an L but when you look into the details, it's not as black & white.

GWS semi-final still our biggest choke and even then they mostly won because of Toby Greene and he shouldn't have even played.

Could argue we should have beat the Cats in the PF but they played amazing that night.

Hipwood (24) and Rayner (22) will give them a different look. But an average of a hundred games is often considered a prerequisite for a premiership, and they're there already - each of their six recent finals they've averaged 102-116 games.

Tonight could've gone either way, reflecting ladder finishes, but they were playing the 5th side.

They're putting themselves in the frame with repeated top four finishes but haven't quite been premiership material.

Think you're still lacking something in the midfield. Need a bit more size and two way running ability in there.

Their effort against Geelong last year will still be the one that hurts most IMO. The Cats were a great side but the Lions had the chance to energize a home crowd.

Although tonight has to be right up there too for disappointment despite a valiant effort.

Get the talls at both end back to full health and freshen up the midfield rotations and they're as talented as any side. So I'd expect big things the next few years.

There's probably a limit to how far Neale, Zorko and Lyons can take a side, but McCluggage and Bailey might get even better, Rayner's the clearest missing piece on potential and Berry and Dev Robertson should add something with continuity.

They were so far ahead of the curve a few years ago by getting Neale and Lyons and taking a huge jump up the ladder that the young mids that were probably meant to be the core of the side still aren't close to their primes.

Remember a few years ago when Brisbane spent the whole season being called the best bottom side ever, since they were competitive in so many matches but kept losing?

Well now they're doing it in finals. Looking at their finals results three years running, they are chokers without a doubt. It's very frustrating to go through as a supporter, something supporters of my club and others can say from experience.

100%, we had Rayner earmarked for that but then his ACL put bed to that...We hoped Berry could be that too but hes had a rough season with injuries and outside of an aging Zorko, a not super fast Neale/Lyons we really have Bailey and McCluggage. Both are still young though.
