I do not have anything against Brock but the thread on the Melbourne board has me thinking whether the club should try and get something of value for him while he has a market.
I can't see him getting much game time and it would be a shame if he ended up just being a very good VFL player when he could be a leader at a club like Melbourne. Could be a win win. Thoughts?

I don't think he would go back.. I got the impression he wasn't happy.

I can't see him being happy as the leader of the most dysfunctional footy club.

If he gets delisted (which I think is unlikely) he is more likely to end up at Collingwood who are now in desperate need of a player like him.

There are probably 5-6 guys on the list that would get delisted before Brock.

I don't think he will get a massive contract this time around.

It's an unfortunate situation for Brock, if he was still with Melbourne he'd probably be in their top 5 players....but can't crack a midfield spot with us.

I still think he'll play a few games for us this year, midfield depth is so important. We've been very fortunate that we haven't had midfield injuries of late.

Another Brock thread. he's not the same player that left Melbourne in 2009.

To suggest a club would offer us something. Mature rookie or bust.

He'd wanted to show some form at AFL level for any team to gamble on a slow 26yo, turning 27 by next season. He's at an age when many players are encouraged to hang up the boots as teams pursue a youth policy.

Perhaps i should have been more specific. Let me be clear, i wish he was good enough to be in our 22 but at the moment he isn't. Would a team like Melbourne find a spot for him? Arguably, yes. What could we get in return?

I'm still hopeful he will get a run at some stage early this season, have a blinder and then establish himself in the team. I don't think he's all that much slower than Curnow and suspect he may be of more value. But we are trying to win a flag using speed, speed and more speed so his lack of it counts against him more heavily than at some other clubs where he would be a walk up start.

We will get nothing for him however as he would no doubt go through the preseason draft.

We will employ a rotation policy this year and Brock will no doubt get his chance - maybe to substitute for a rested Judd in due course. Same reason to keep three talls capable of rucking - rotations will become a much bigger part of the game looking forward - and teams with maybe 28 genuine first choice players will have a big advantage over a full year.

Is Brock worth a top 45 draft pick? I believe not. 3 years is a long time.

We'll promote Curnow and Tuohy, so it's unlikely we'll have more than 3 live selections in the draft. That would mean delisting 6 players.

Thus we effectively wouldn't get anything for him, even if Melbourne were hypothetically interested.

Why would we need to delist 6 players?

Don't we only need to make 3 changes to the list?

maybe richmond they have a tendancy to pick up and older player, miller/maric and he may fit into there young midfield

Brock would be terrific for Melbourne or Brisbane at the very least.

No thanks. We've got plenty of slowish inside mids (Black, Redden, Harwood, Polkinghorne, Rockliff etc). We need more linebreakers.

Fair enough as I was thinking Rich and support for Black
It's just that first possession that would help the runners, but I see what you mean.

He certainly has value, his type of player is just way down our list of "things to fix".

We don't need to use 3 draft selections.

It's an untainted draft and a pick in the 40s would be nothing to sneeze at.

Scotland, Judd, Carrazzo, Simpson, Waite are all the wrong side of 25. I'd personally want to stock up on any quality midfielder or tall forward that slipped through.

Hear there is one or two who might struggle to come up for this one. If they do come up, then Brock obviously wont play until someone in the midfield slips up. The club does plan to rest 1 or 2 in the GWS game, and want to get Brock in for that one, form permitting over the next 2 weeks. He will get his chance in the next 4 to 5 weeks, he just needs to take it.

I reckon Armfield would be one of them

I remember when he hurt himself against north yet they listed him to play against Melbourne - before withdrawing him before the game.

I think we're going to go for broke this year, Azul.

At this stage I am expecting several more than just three delisting/retirements/trades.
It's going to be brutal, but necessary.

I can think of at least 4 on the main list and 2 on the rookie list who will most likely not be around next year.

These do not include Brock McLean. Nor do they include retirements.

Be interesting to see what happens in the trade department though. That we cannot have a stab at until the end of the season
