Wrong. Well actually right I guess, most of my internet knowledge comes from Bigfooty actually which is sad enough in itself, but unfortunately I found out about this craze through meeting a real-life Brony. :/

Buy him a slab of export and he will be cured

Don't think I'll ever run into him again, but he seemed like the most normal of the bunch I was with that day, which doesn't do much to fill me with confidence about the others :(

Worse Brony thing I have run into is a mod of the game Crusader Kings II

Crusader Kings is a medieval era dynastical game where you play as a dynasty and conquer, plot and **** your way into more and more power. Effectively Game of Thrones the video game (and there is a great GOT mod).

Some people decided to make a MLP mod of this game.
So now you can marry your Holy Roman Emperor to a pony.

And of course the ponies have uber stats and skills and are vastly superior to all humans.

Kill it with fire.

There was a very large creative community (especially on YouTube) behind it early on. It appealed to different people for different reasons, but ultimately it was just a very well made show (unexpectedly so) headed by a popular creator in Faust (Powerpuff Girls, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends).

That's dropped off significantly since Faust left. Those who are left seem to be into as much as, or even moreso than, most other fanbases (eg. Trekkies), which is odd considering what type of show it is.

And furthermore, those who envelop themselves in it seem to go for things which gain attention for being very disturbing. Like that picture up there.

The whole Brony phenomenom came up in another forum I occasionally frequent and this explanation was given by a self confessed Brony:

Hasbro, the owners of MLP, asked Lauren Faust to rejuvenate the property with a new TV show. Faust -- who worked on the Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends -- took it to heart. She looked at romance novels and selected six classic female lead archetypes, and used those as a base for her main cast. She gave the MLP universe a cosmology, a history, and a social structure. The final result is an amazing children's show, with a vivid cast of strong female characters who deal with real danger.

That would be enough, except for one little detail: Hasbro makes their money off of selling dolls. That means that they don't care if the episodes of the program are posted to YouTube. So the new MLP show is all available on YouTube, as are a *great* many fan-made edits of it, and because of that the show got a lot of attention on the internet. Image boards (particularly 4chan) started being swamped with pictures of the characters. Fanfic sites sprung up. A group of bronies are making fan-made animations set in the new MLP universe. pr0n sites are being beseiged with new, bizarre material. These ponies have taken over the internet. And Hasbro is encouraging them; references to the fandom is showing up in promotional material, and at least two fan-named ponies are being added to the show. (A third one, 'Doctor Whooves', will be getting a fan-made spinoff animation.)

If you want to know more about the new series, the full title is 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic'. Start with the pilot:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeJ6-gN0eB4 It'll introduce you to the cosmology of the ponies and the 1000 year history of their world, as well as the colorful main cast. If you're more interested in a meaty analysis of the worldbuilding in the show, check out this page: http://www.overthinkingit.com/2011/02/24/my-little-pony-political-eco...
Be sure to read the comments, as they point out some things that the main essay misses. Or if you want to plug into the pony craze, the center of activity right now is Equestria Daily (http://www.equestriadaily.com/; may contain some adult content but not on the front page.)

If the second season is as good as the first, it's going to be hard to get away from My Little Pony. The fandom is creative and Hasbro smells a cash cow. Fortunately, it really is a terrific show and it deserves all the attention it's getting.

and later on, in response to a question about the MLP character Dr Whooves:

Blame the animators. They put a pony in the backgrounds who has Matt Smith-like hair and an hourglass symbol on his flank. To make it worse, in one scene this background character appears three times. You can only do that with time travel or cloning, and the fans latched onto the former. Now Dr. Whooves is the star of hundreds of fanfics, and he's getting his own animated fan episode.

Whether or not Hasbro runs with this character is in doubt, as they might not want to risk angering other copyright holders. But they elevated another animation mistake -- 'Derpy', a wall-eyed pegasus -- to canon due to fan response. A third background character, 'DJ Pon-3', wasn't a mistake but the fans loved it so much she's getting promoted to secondary character also.

Make a cool world. Let your fans play in it. That really seems to be the key to this phenomenon.

So every time anyone posts 'Derp', they're channeling My Little Pony.

This guy knows the score.
