Not sure if its been done in another thread.

Whats everyone's call on FB this year?

I like the Gov as he is a bit longer, but im not sure how good he is as a 1:1 defender(anyone seen much of this?)

Not sure Brown is the choice either....but I kind of get the feeling he could surprise everyone this year. Plus, I like the Gov being a bit further up the ground taking pack grabs.

Whats everyones thoughts?

Browns played full back many times and has done ok, the Gov has not. The Gov can play a wide variety of position, Brown can not. Thus Brown to play FB. Simple question I would have thought

So you wouldnt want to see how the Gov would go back there? Brown can hold down CHB in my opinion...

Gov needs to emulate his game somewhat like Gibson and Harry Taylor. Where he comes in as the 3rd man and effects the contest positively as either spoiling the ball or intercepting it. It will be something that suits his strengths, just like what Taylor does for the cats.

Difference between him and Brown is that Brown is a more effective spoiler in a 1 on 1 contest, which is why Brown will be more suited playing FB

What would your back 6 look like?

Yeh, I'm all for that....but more so when EMAC returns next year. How bout this question....what happens if Brown goes down?

This.

Well that wasn't your original question. There's no point wasting McGoverns strengths which is his marking and kicking by having him play FB. His best position is as 3rd tall so he doesn't need to to play too hard on his man. If he's not playing tight defensively he can float across to be the 3rd man up in contests and also so we can utilise him coming out of our back line, utilising his strengths.

Relax buddy...can we not slightly deviate from the initial question and divulge ourselves in a gentlemanly discussion?

Im a bit worried about how Brown will go against bigger forward like Hawkins etc.

God forbit we end up playing Brown on Buddy.

As mentioned though, we can always throw the best player/brownlow medalist down back!
Brown has often played on Buddy and done very well. In fact a lot of times west coast have preferred to play Brown on Buddy over eMac

Question is, can Schofield be that second lockdown key defender? That would allow McGovern to be the third tall (Ie. Gibson, Taylor, late Glass).

Could be that Yeo is our third tall, if Schofield can't get up.

Yes iam also a lil worried about a match up like that but with Emac down i believe brown is the next best option as he has the strength, size and speed to compete. I think he will do fine people have a negative opinion of Brown as a footy player due to his decision making and his disposal. His spoiling and defensive capabilities are actually quite good.

Yeah I remember one game, Franklin only kicked goals when Brown was on the interchange... he's got his number

Nah I'm a big fan of Brown, dont get me wrong.

IMO it at least means we now have to act as a back 6, rather than allowing a 1x1 at full back with the confidence Eric would win more than he would lose.

Team defence has to be the go. Put as much pressure on the ball carrier, and work hard both ways. Something we weren't doing particularly well at times.

Brown will go at FB, with Schofield at CHB, with hurn/gov trying to pitch in and get to as many contests as possible. That way we try to avoid direct 1x1 contests, and free hurn & gov to use their footskills.

If Schofield doesn't handle CHB, then you might be tempted to swap his role with McGovern.

Hurn suddenly becomes so much more important to us now. His intercept marking off HB becomes more crucial than ever.

I'd love to see Schoey handle CHB well, so Gov can drift forward, but Gov is still essential in defence ATM. Hopefully Schoey improves as a one on one defender as the season goes on, because we need him as a KPD option even once Emac comes back.

Glad he has added some muscle! Always rated his run & his kicking

Brown players the lock down tall defender. Sole job is to keep opponent from kicking goals.

The Gov plays the attacking tall backman who zones off to intercept incoming high balls. Normally this is a CHB role.

Schofield plays third tall / backup with rebounding ability. He has bulked up quite a bit over the past off season. Bigger in the legs, core and arms. So he is actually much better equipped now than he has ever been to take on bigger forwards / resting rucks.

I don't see Brown playing on small to medium forwards much this year.
