Leg blow for Tiger Brown
30 March 2007 Herald-Sun
Mike Sheahan

RICHMOND star Nathan Brown has a "hot spot" in the leg broken so graphically almost two years ago.

Spot of bother: Richmond star Nathan Brown will miss Sunday's season opener at the MCG after scans revealed a problem with the leg broken almost two years ago.

Coach Terry Wallace confirmed last night Brown would not take his place in the selected team for Sunday's Round 1 clash with Carlton at the MCG.

The brilliant forward will miss at least two games, perhaps more, after just 10 games in each of the past two seasons.

The hot spot, only 5cm below the break that derailed his career 22 months ago, was revealed in a scan yesterday.

It is a bitter blow for Brown, 29, and his club after indications he was on track to return to his stellar form of the first half of 2005.

Richmond had planned a media conference before training this afternoon to announce the development, but came clean last night after inquiries from the Herald Sun.

An hour after football operations manager Paul Armstrong denied the story, coach Terry Wallace called to apologise on Armstrong's behalf and confirm the story.

"He's not going to play," Wallace said.

"It's a stress reaction. If you keep going on it, they end up becoming a stress fracture.

"The good news is we caught it early and before it became a major issue.

"It's normally a 20-day injury and he's been off it for 10 days" Wallace said. "He's just got to keep resting it 'til the hot spot goes away. I guarantee it isn't a stress fracture and the original fracture has healed."

The concern, though, is yet another problem in his right leg. The alarm bells started ringing when Brown was seen limping out of Richmond's pre-season launch on Monday night.

He attempted to train at the club's MCG session mid-week, but hobbled off the ground soon after jogging out.

Wallace said Brown was bitterly disappointed.

"His last game (the Mildura practice game against Collingwood) was his best game (this year)," Wallace said.

"He reckons he was playing as good a footy as he was prior to the injury."

Brown snapped his lower leg in a tangle with Melbourne's Matthew Whelan during the Round 10 game against Melbourne on May 27, 2005.

He had kicked 34 goals in 10 games and was at the pinnacle of his then nine-season career with the Western Bulldogs and Richmond.

Brown joins Troy Simmonds and Mark Coughlan on the sidelines for the opening of the new season.

Very hard to ever fully recover from such a horrific injury. sad news.

Interesting when you look back at how Nathan Brown said he came to Richmond to play finals, and look at the Bulldogs now...
Tho using Richmond and Finals in the same sentence is an anamoly in itself.

You would hope for the sake of Troy Simmonds and Graham Polak that they didnt join Richmond to play finals football, and looking at Fremantle now...

F*** off mate we don't need this sort of s*** after such bad news.

Visitors get too much lenience on this board. I wouldve been banned for "trolling" for saying that on any other board,
And its catching on, we are getting more and more ****s round here by the week because they know they can get away with it.

anyway FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARK. Cant believe the guy is out. Still think we'll be ok though.

I reckon Hyde will replace him, but I wish they put Meyer in the side. He would be an ideal replacement.

Geez this makes Pettifer's game so much more important now.

Absolutely shattered.

He said he felt like he was playing as good as he ever was last prac match - he is back - it is just a small hiccup.

When he returns and when he does get on the ground we can all expect to once again see the very best of the mercurial Brown.

I don't know mate, this has a nasty smell of "indefinite" all over it.

Dreadful news for the guy. Good luck to him and let's hope we see him fit and firing again in a few weeks.

He has been issued with a warning already, but I/we dont want to get to the point where we dont let anyone else into the board. That is unless that is what people want.

i look at it this way. we havent really had him for almost 2 yrs so he wont be a loss. but he will be missed. does this mean we are putting all our faith into krakouer and pettifer to fill the small forward roles.ahhhh f**&&^*^*k

I always hate to see players cut down due to injury ...and it's even worse when it's a gun player like Browny ..i wish him all the best but i have a nasty feeling he may never play full seasons again .

If the worse does happen (lets hope it doesn't) and Brown never gets back to his best or plays many matches again. Would this be considered another failed trade by Richmond?

whats the big deal?

we have THE NEXT BIG THING in andrew "team plays well, i play well" krakouer

millers needs to sign him up asap in case we lose him

lol at the browny setback - welcome to 2 weeks ago :thumbsd:

Very unlucky I'd say,if there is anyone to blame for this it's that clumsy goose Wheatley for breaking browns leg in first place.

Sad to hear, Watched browny since he came to the dogs as a 17yr old!
I would be lying if said i didnt think back and smirk at browny for leaving us to play finals, i really would.
But the guy is a champion footballer and was one of my fav players, unfortunatley im with others in thinking that he will never be the player he was. The first 9 games of 05' was probly the best form he was ever in too.

Unfortuntely I think your'e right about this and age has a lot to do with this,if he were ten years younger he would have healed faster and made a complete recovery,Getting older sux:thumbsd:
