News Brownlow Betting Scandal allegations - 6th Dec Police Widen Investigations

Four men have been arrested in relation to suspicious betting activity linked to this year’s Brownlow Medal count.

Police raided properties at Glenroy, Kilsyth, Oak Park, Drouin, Craigieburn and Doreen.

It has been alleged a person with knowledge of the voting tally from some matches distributed the information to a group of people.

Police are investigating exactly how much money was awarded from the bets.

At this stage, they have no information to suggest the outcome of the votes were impacted as the allegations relate solely to the distribution of information.

Police widen investigations 6th December

Victoria Police are now looking into all Brownlow betting activity in relation to games Michael Pell was named emergency umpire for in 2021.
Pell was one of four men arrested in November in relation to suspicious betting activity on the 2022 Brownlow Medal.
It has been alleged that bets were laid on more than 10 matches the young umpire helmed.
Pell entered the AFL umpiring ranks in 2021 and served as an emergency, with Channel Nine’s Paddy Sweeney reporting that Victoria Police are now investigating games he was a part of.

Wow. I don't subscribe to the theory that more than 1 person knows the end result but umpires could definitely share who they gave 3 votes to game by game.
The Brownlow has the most amount of markets to bet on, so there is a lot of money to be made here.
If they managed to get information that Karl Amon would out poll Port teammates they would have made a killing, I think he was about $151 to do so.

Will almost certainly apply to 3 vote games market, where an individual umpire will have knowledge to affect betting markets.

Karl Amon 3 vote games up there for suspicion.

You wouldn't leak obvious 3 votes where the odds are sub $1.10, but if the odds were 151-1...

It must be more than one game, hey.
Because bookies will see red flags if 3 or 4 gamblers put a truckload of money on a few bets, well above what they normally would, and the bets pay big.
But how is this different to insider trading?
My ex worked in admin for a mining company, some of the engineers openly spoke about another company in which they bought lots of shares cheaply, shortly before the company announced it was gonna spend millions exploring NW of WA for oil and gas- the share price went through the roof and they sold at huge profit.
A few months later, the proposed explorations were canned, share price dropped.
In the last 5 years, that company (MMR) has done SFA and just operates out of a small office in Perth with 5 staff.
The directors are all on the boards of other big companies too, so we think this little company is a side gig they use as a tax write-off

If youre doing it properly you would offload on several books to try and hide these big bets, nevertheless they still would stand out given the huge odds.

Love it how the bookies are quick to turn on those who win s**t loads of cash :D

They are the first to boot you off their betting apps if you go a winning streak.
Yeah, bookies are more than happy to do anything they can to rip as much money as they can from punters regardless of the impact on their families and society as a whole. But the moment someone gets an advantage on them, its 'boo hoo, can the police please save us'.

The polies are gutless for letting them do that and the police involved are more than happy to be the storm troopers. - Not a skerrick of decency between the lot of them.

Anyone who has knowledge of a guaranteed outcome (especially at big odds) can become a target for organised crime.

That or the umpire/s went looking for a buyer that would pay them for the info.

In one of the most shocking results of the 2022 Brownlow Medal, Karl Amon led the count for Port Adelaide, despite having a probability of 0.1% to do so.

Amon finished one vote ahead of Connor Rozee, who our projections had as 92% chance of polling the most votes for Port Adelaide.

Although he was expected to start quietly, it began looking ominous for Rozee when he received no votes in Rounds 9 and 11, despite our model ranking him as the second-best player on the ground in each game.

With 3.5 votes going missing for Rozee in those matches alone, it only got worse in Round 15, with the All-Australian polling one vote despite being projected as 66.2% chance of getting three and recording the maximum 10 coaches' votes.

Round 17 truly ended all hope, with Rozee's 79.9% three-vote probability the single highest percentage to go unrewarded with all three votes for the entire 2022 AFL Brownlow Medal count.

The midfielder finished the night in positive fashion, with three votes in Round 23, but it was not enough as Amon took out Port's 2022 count by the narrowest of margins.

Amon's night included four three-vote games in which he had a 9.0% probability or less of receiving the most votes, according to our projections, with his three in Round 14 remarkably given just a 0.1% chance.

Port Adelaide's 2022 Brownlow Medal Leading Votes

  • 15 votes: Karl Amon
  • 14 votes: Connor Rozee
  • 13 votes: Ollie Wines
  • 11 votes: Sam Powell-Pepper
  • 10 votes: Travis Boak

Hopefully the dodgy umpires get everything they deserve.

Looking forward to the Netflix doco about this scandal.

The irony of the heading of this link should not be lost here.:drunk:

Anyways, here is the list of umpires for the games in 2022.
