Home state advantage. Little travel. COVID.

Brownlow*

Real "best and fairest" 2020 = Dusty Martin IMO.

Always amusing when Victorian supporters only apply this logic one way.

Would you kindly go back to all previous years and apply a formula to the Brownlow votes that reflects the travel advantages Victorians enjoy every year?

It makes sense richmond regularly have maybe 1 player that gets over 20 touches whereas Collingwood have pendelbury, Adams and treloar who get over 20 every game

Yeah fair point. We fared better when we played a possession game in 2014-15. All the more reason to retrieve the award from the statsmen and hand it back to the umpires - have them vote immediately after the match, before they have a chance to be influenced by stats.

I know you said last decade. But why not go back 2 decades? Lions had 2 brownlows in 2 premier years.

I get what ya saying. We would love a more even contribution. As proven last night we probably lack one more A grade midfield rotation. I think ya might just need to let it go a touch.

You're making a fair point but I don't know that it'd happen again - the vote totals for Brownlows have become inflated over the years, as seen by the repeated "record totals" in recent years, so the "evenness" argument applies more these days than back then. Neale got more votes last year than either Aker or Black in their winning years.

I think his reaction is overblown though.

Travel advantages for the regular seasons are mitigated by the favourable treatment interstate clubs receive via priority picks, biased umpiring etc.

And why would travelling to Melbourne be disadvantageous? It's a beautiful city. It's not like you're being sent to the Gold Coast or Perth for a weekend.

How quickly people stop debating in good faith when you pull the thread of their already tattered logic.

You missed the sarcasm in my post.

I don't really think Dusty Martin deserved the Brownlow this year.

They should do that but I seriously don't get it. If I was umpiring I would notice if a backman keeps a gun forward under check or if a tagger shuts down a mid I don't understand how the ups don't also

There has been a bit of comment about the votes being more concentrated on star players in recent times, so they know who the stars are. Maybe they're instructed to promote positive play with their voting.

I love how Brownlow night Celebrate the REAL highlights of the game, which automatically excludes tackling, spoiling and smothering.

let's be honest backmen have had it easy, especially this year with greasy conditions, which favours the backmen and it's obviously been an uneven playing field.

So for the people on this forum who think the game is great because of their fetish for all things that isn't skill related, well your WRONG!

I know as a supporter I would rather a defender holding someone goaless rather than dangerfield getting 30 touches never hitting a target

Yeah pretty much. The way Richmond play is why you see these numbers. The system, the game style etc.. even team performances and we rarely flog teams aswell.

Richmond play on the edge and as a result give away plenty of free kicks. Come finals they generally let more stuff go which suits us. Its also why people whinge even when we lose the free kick tally by plenty.

I think the midfielders win the Brownlow because coaches put the best players on the ball. That’s where it starts. Your not going to play Fyfe, Cripps, Bont etc in the back pocket are you.

I'm sure the AA selectors told me that most of those guys are forwards anyway.
