Brownlow tip

Having seen a few of the Lions pre-season games if Michael Voss stays injury free and in the same form as he has been during the pre-season he will win another Brownlow.

I think more than any other player at the Lions he is their barometer. I expect that during the season other teams will interchange taggers off the bench against him so his extra stamina and strength doesn't become an issue.

I have no doubt also that other teams will tackle him and crunch him legally at every opportunity. It will be interesting to see if Matthews tries to nurse and protect him through the season and when games are not in dispute sits him on the bench.

Matthews history at the Pies says that he won't put Voss in cotton wool but perhaps his style has changed and he has learnt from previous mistakes.

Class act, very consistent, he was my tip for the medal last year. Didn't he miss out on all-Australian selection - my memory's not that good

Yep I agree. I also reckon Chris Scott is one to watch, he has done great in the Lions B&F for many years now, and I reckon it's just a matter of time before he breaks through for a Brownlow. Puts in 100% every week, a quiet achiever but amazingly valuable, alongside players like Ashcroft, Hart and VOSSYYYYYYYYYYYY.

Also keep an eye on Andy McLeod. He was very surprised to poll so highly in last year's vote, and is determined to do better this year. Once again, as with Voss, injuries will determine his fate! Go Macca!

Nathan Buckley is apparantly a pretty tidy player.

All we need to do is win 10-11 games, which we will do comfortably, and if he doesn't mouth off at the umpires too much, he will win the medal.

He has been the best, most consitent and most complete player in the league for the past four years.

He is the one who truly deserves this medal, which often goes to the less deserving (ie last two years).

I'll try not to be biased, but my tip is WAYNE CAREY. The umpires will finally follow the lead of the "experts", and give him his just reward. He'll also win the Coleman, the Norm Smith, and the most important of all, the SYD BARKER.

And he'll also be captain of the Premiership winning team.

Of course you also have to consider stars in other teams (Hird, Buckley, McLeod, etc. etc.), but those 5 above, are my tips for the moment.

Unfortunately, Lioness, I don't think C.Scott catches the eye of the umpires, as much as what he does of those who actually know their footy!

I'll continue the mostly biased selections for the Brownlow Medal by tipping Robert Harvey to win his third.

He followed up his Brownlow Medal years of 1997 and 1998 with two injury interrupted seasons. At only 29, I think he has plenty of good footy left in him and if he can have an injury-free year, he is not without a show.

From other teams, I would love to see someone like a Chris Grant win although that might require Terry Wallace to play him at Centre Half Back. This may be a luxury that the bulldogs can't afford.

Obviously the usual candidates of Buckley, Hird, Voss, Koutafides, McLeod, West, etc are chances at this stage. It's hard to come up with a smokey until at least a couple of weeks into the season. Maybe someone like Nick Stevens.

I agree with your assessment of Buckley, but as for winning 10 to 11 games "comfortably", don't you think that one might be a little optimistic for season 2001? Perhaps another year away, I think . . .

O'Loughlin is too inconsistent for mine. You've got a lot of other vote getters up at Swan as well (Goodes, Kelly, Schwass, etc).

He'd have to have his best season to date to do it. It's not beyond him though.

N.Lappin - as far as I can see, he is far too overshadowed by the likes of Black and Voss to get enough votes. Even Black looks like a roughie when you have Voss in contention.

S.King is a good go for this season. He's one who I forgot to mention before.

M.Primus might also be worth a look - if he can only handle the injuries.

Once again Olmy, we are seriously underrated. What have we not done to prove that we can match it with the best of them?

Saints first up after their "phenominal" recruiting campaign - won easy, should have won easier.

West Coast on their second rate Subiaco Oval - won in a close one after losing two of our senior players (one the highly talented Nick Davis) to knee injuries.

And North at full strength fighting for their dinner, we should have won but for the worst set of umpiring decisions I've ever seen. If we were at full strength, we would have beaten them.

And does anyone seriously think Michael Malthouse will be as easy on the players as he was last year? His coaching alone will win us 10-11 games.

Buckley is the best footballer in the comp. Anyone who says otherwise is being biased or hasn't actually watched him play.

I think Buckley rates as an equal, amongst the top few players in the comp at the moment (ie: Voss, Carey, Hird, McLeod, etc.).

IMO, it's pretty hard to differentiate one player as being the 'best' - it depends on the criteria.

I also think Collingwood are fairly underrated - but when you consider their results of the past few seasons, this is somewhat justified.

I certainly don't think Collingwood will be an easy-beat team this season (they weren't in 2000 either). In fact, I reckon they might surprise a few opposition teams.

I think the Pies have shown over the pre-season, that they're developing into a very disciplined, hard at the ball, hard running unit. They've got a couple of good marking players, and a lot of young talent.

It's not out of possibility that Collingwood could win 10 or 11 games - however, I just don't think they'll do it comfortably.

I reckon Collingwood should be extremely pleased if they have 8 to 10 wins this season. Another year of developing the younger players physically, and also experiencing them in the ways of footy. IMO, season 2002 will see them make the finals.

buckley gets the most votes but is ineligible as he was suspended for hitting one of his own teammates.

hird has the most votes to halfway through the season until lloyd falls over in a marking contest onto hirds foot causing the recurrence of the stress fracture.

matthew richardson has the most votes up to round 18 but disappears during a game as he has run and jumped around in ever decreasing circles until he has vanished up his own arse.

the winner.

after not getting a kick in the first 3 rounds blighty unleashes a fearful tirade of abuse directed to one tall man with purple dread-locked hair. he then goes on to kick 84 goals whilst getting the most tap outs for the competition.

spider collects his medal and one week later will also win the norm smith in a saints premiership side.

hes going to pick up a lot of easy possessions from half back and thru the centre and his slinky skills will make him stand out and catch the eyes of the umpires.....

FIGJAM, i think maybe you should stop being biased
Carey is the GREATEST player in the AFL by a mile, i hate the roos and him, but i respect him, midfielders have much less impact on the game than key position players, if you were to say someone is the best then you would have to measure the impact they would have on a game, while buckley is the best midfielder going around players like carey/king/whitnall have a much greater impact on thier team, and are thus better players

Cousins also has said he is gearing up for his best season yet so you never know.


All that was of course biased to my club but outside my club Lloyd might be alright Voss, Hird, West and Buckley .... you know the usual suspects.
