If you wanted McGinnity to play a similar role to Crowley (pretty much totally negative), I can see him doing this. If you wanted him to play the role like Scott Selwood, Carrazzo, van Berlo and a few other run with players who also get the ball and use it reasonably well (not elite), then he'll have to improve a fair bit since I don't him as being capable of doing this right now.

I'm also not convinced that he could replicate his defensive inside-50 efforts in the midfield. The latter requires a much bigger tank and more speed to close down chases. I expect that the preseason will be used to condition him one way or the other though, and he's also a handy sub since he has experience in both defense and forward roles.

Speed is just about mcginnity's best asset tbh. He's at least as fast as most mids. His areas of significant weakness are his ability to read play and his kicking. Because of his weakness in reading play he's not much good as a defender as in most circumstances he just focuses on the man only which isn't enough in defence because he can get caught in bad positions.

I personally dont see his kicking improving much and while his decision making and ball reading may improve to an average level it won't get any better than that. At the moment he is a fringe players and bordering on the best 22. The thing keeping him in the side is his hardness at the ball, the man and his speed. Even with significant improvement he'll still only ever be a fringe player but not everyone has the talent to be any more than that. The one thing you know is that however many games he plays he will have given it his absolute best shot.
