Bruce’s decline in commentating the footy is exacerbated by his brilliance on the Racing coverage. There he is still at his absolute best hosting the coverage where he can expand on all his knowledge and his passion just comes out naturally.

The play by play just isn’t working anymore.

Listen to this full piece of commentary from Bruce in 2001 (where people still say he was in his prime), this was the last year 7 had the rights before losing them to channel 9 and channel 10 in 2002-2006.

Honestly to the untrained ear, the way he calls the action then isn't widely different to how he would call it now IMO.
Reckon the lead-up to the mark was pretty good. Crapped on about it too much but looks like the game was over anyway with that margin.

Throught the commentary was okay for the Grand Final but that was because they, (namely BT and Bruce), took it seriously and just called the game straight instead of making unfunny, cringe worthy jokes and banter.

In defence of Bruce, the game would be so hard to commentate in the modern game with the stoppages and scrimmages. He was definetely at his best in the 90's when the game was flowing a lot more.

Bruce is so accurate and brilliant at commentating from so far away in Melbourne studio

Channel 7 made the right call to have Bruces' replacement be JB and not Hamish or Darcy. JB and BT have a rare chemistry together that bring out the best in one another while off setting the weaknesses.
