On Wednesday night/Thursday morning Charlie Rose on Bloomberg TV ( shown on PBS in USA and he works for CBS morning program) interviewed Clive Davis who is a an American record producer and music industry executive who has been inducted into the rock n roll hall of fame in the non-performer section.
He was president of Columbia records between 1967 and 1973 before setting up Arista records in 1975. He currently is chief creative officer of Sony Music Entertainment - Sony took over Columbia Records in the late 1980's. He has recently written a book, his memoirs, The Soundtrack of My Life and has been flogging that, saw him on Fox will Bill O'Reilly a month ago.
He is the bloke that signed Bruce Springsteen to Columbia in 1973. In this interview he talks about Bruce as well as stars he signed and then ones at Arista inc Aretha Franklin, Billy Joel, Barry Manilow, Patti Smith, Carlos Santana and Whitney Huston to name a few. It's interesting to hear his take on a young Bruce compared to now believing he is the greatest rock performer in the world. Talks about songwriters a bit and how some artists have great voices but don't have signature songs. He says 80% of his artists write their own songs.
