Sax player is great, absolutely nailed the solo for me, they're a very solid band.

They have been doing it for 20 years so they are pretty tight. How does the tribute band you saw a few months ago compare to them. Tramps like us is a great name by the way.

I wonder if they got to play a 10 minute song on air, or just BTR was on air and the Jungleland was taped to put on the web?

In December Backstreets.com put up a video of the first 3 TV interviews Bruce ever gave from around 1978. Bruce's official website picked it up and put it on there front page and its moved near the bottom. At the moment its at the top of

The Darkness tour was a watershed moment for Springsteen in many ways, among them, granting his first real television interviews on the road. Notably, in New York, Cleveland, and Los Angeles, Bruce invited cameras backstage and spoke with local TV news journalists about his audience and his shows. These interviews wound up as feature segments on local news, which paired the backstage chat with live performance footage.

Our gift to you this year are these three feature interview segments just as they aired in 1978. The video offers the broadcast news appearances in best-ever quality (though still showing some ill effects of being 33-year-old footage as expected). The 16-minute compilation features:

* WABC New York with Joel Siegel (Madison Square Garden, August 21, 1978)

* WDVM Washington, DC "The 9 Muses" segment with Henry Tenenbaum (interview from Richfield, OH Largo, MD, backstage at the Capital Centre; footage from Largo, MD, August 15, 1978)

*KABC Los Angeles with JJ Jackson, Bruce's first-ever televised interview (The Forum, July 7, 1978)

Special thanks to the Dick Wingate Archives for providing the video and the Brucebase Wiki for source info.

The last interview is after the show at the Roxy Theatre not The Forum July 7, 1978. It was this show that I talked about in my earlier post which I have a bootleg copy on tape and produced 8 of the first 11 songs on the LIVE/1975-85 triple CD box set.

I assume Meadowlands is a fair way from residential housing to finish at almost 2am.

The show is delayed two hours due to heavy rain passing over the stadium. The fans are kept in the concourse and under the roofs of the grand stand until shortly before 10:30 p.m. when the show finally kicks off. Due to the delay the show doesn't end till around 2 a.m., well into Bruce's 63rd birthday. "Into the Fire" is dedicated to Rich Nappi, a firefighter, 9/11 hero, Bruce fan (and Greasy Lake member) who died earlier this year in connection with his work. Gary US Bonds again guests during "Jole Blon" and "This Little Girl". Before "Twist and Shout" Bruce's mother, sister, mother-in-law and other relatives appear on the stage with a birthday cake that Bruce shares with the audience.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Bruce Springsteen celebrated his 63rd birthday onstage until nearly 2 a.m. Sunday, joined at the end by his hearty mom.

Adele Springsteen danced and sang background to "Twist and Shout," walking offstage with her son and his band at nearly 2. Her only concession to age was a pair of hastily made earplugs.

She watched as her son cut a giant cake in the shape of a guitar, passing out pieces to some audience members.
His show in the open-air MetLife Stadium was delayed three hours Saturday by authorities because of a downpour and worries about lightning. Thousands of fans clustered on indoor ramps waiting for the rain to stop.

When it did, Springsteen and his E Street Band took the stage at 10:30 p.m. to the strains of Wilson Pickett's "In the Midnight Hour," a song they performed when the clock hit that mark. They also covered Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Who'll Stop the Rain," and it worked.

"Thank you for your patience," Springsteen told the audience. He said it had been a long time since he had performed on his birthday.

It was the third of a three-night stand at his home state arena.

Seriously, is there a greater song than Jungleland? It is beyond perfection. Everything about it blows my mind. From the delicate piano intro, to the build at the end of the second verse. Then moving to where the band is running like a well oiled machine, to the solo, and the heartbreaking final verses to those painful wails. Just wow.

Close to being the best version I've heard. (I think I pasted it the other day).

First I everyb hgeard of Lost oin the Flood was on the Hamersmioth 75 dvd. Moved me in ways I had not yet expiertienced. (have now). When taken in the contrext of Greetings of Asbury Park, it is a standout on thje album but nhoit the the lewvel is is at Hamersnoith.

Lost in the Flood rates int eh highest group of Bruuuuuuuuuce songsalong with Spirit, Magic, Junglrmnad, Rocky Groundf, Kitty, Racing, Let's be Friends (yeAH i SAID IT_), Dount=bound TraIN, Soul Driver, etcd.

Bit too much to drink? :D

Good grief. My humblest apologies for bringing The Boss into disrepute. Allow me to try again. Oh and by the way, that is a cracking performance, just great.

Yeah, Lost in the Flood was the song that made me realise just how good Bruce was. I'd heard it a few times on Greetings from Asbury Park, but Spirit and Saint in the City has always stood out on that album to me previously. When the Hammersmith DVD came with the Born to Run boxset, Flood was (and still is) the ultimate highlight from that show. Don't know if it's the charmingly grainy footage and small band or the walk through the audience, but it's an out-of-this-world musical achievement.

It is a great example of how different Greentings from Asbury Park is from all the other albums. The bass is so loud and prominent in the mix. The chorus of just the piano and vocal, perfect.

Flood (album version and live) would be in my top five as well, probably alongside Spirit, Kitty, Downbound Train, and one of: My City of Ruins/Jungleland/Magic/Streets of Fire/Backstreets/Rocky Ground/wow this is hard.

I had no real time for Lost in the Flood until the Live in NY CD and DVD package. I never really understood it, which could be an argument for most songs on Greetings from Ashbury Park, but so many songs from Ashbury grabbed me 30 years ago and stuck, Growin up, For You, Spirit in the Night, It's Hard to be a Saint in the City and obviously Blinded by the Light hearing Manfred Mann's version before Bruce's.

There is an epic quality about it, the way the beat builds up and a dark edge, but I don't know the words and still don't understand it. If I did a top 50 list it wouldn't make it.

But its a good song to run to as part of the whole 2nd CD on the live in NYC, is good to run to.

I deliberately hadn't listened to Wecking Ball for a few months, until I gave it a spin in the car on the way to cricket on Saturday. In short, this thing is the real deal. The perfect mix of everything (folk rhythms, big drums, horns) and the sequencing of the tracks is a real stength of the album. Although I still maintain that We Are Alive should have been left off.

Here is where it ranks after the 'cooling off' period:

The Rising
Darkness
The Wild, the Innocent
Born to Run
Magic
Wrecking Ball
Born in the USA
The Promise (*do we consider this a studio album?)
Tom Joad
Asbury Park
Nebraska
Tunnel of Love
Devils & Dust
The River
Lucky Town
Working
Human Touch

DrVanNostrand good to see someone else loves Streets of Fire and Downbound Train. Underrated songs in Bruce's catalogue IMO. And lol at your drunk post :D

BToR is his best album for me, and of all time. Not a poor song on it.

RussellEbertHandball interesting that Lost In The Flood doesn't grab you. Masterpiece for me, but I do like your description of it.

****ing epic:

Oh that's real nice. This sammy sossa has some great vids up. The direction of that video is great when it gets to the Bruce/Steve guitar duel towards the end, with shots if steely-eyed Max for dramatic effect. :thumbsu:
Watching the build up between Bruce and Steve, and then the constant cutting to Max, and seeing Max build the tempo is ****ing epic.

The Mighty One was bloody killing it.

Where does something like Lost In The Flood rate for you guys?

Obviously very high for me (was number 6 or 7 I think). Absolutely cracking song IMO

Just love it. One of the great driving songs. It really is street poetry, life and death on the street. And not the poets of Jungleland either.
Awesome.

He rides head first into a hurricane and disappears into a point
And there's nothin' left but some blood where the body fell
That is, nothin' left that you could sell
just junk all across the horizon, a real highwayman's farewell

My favourite lines are the

And now the whiz-bang gang from uptown, they're shootin' up the street
And that cat from the Bronx starts lettin' loose, but he gets blown right off his feet
And some kid comes blastin' 'round the corner, but a cop puts him right away
He lays on the street holding his leg, screaming something in Spanish, still breathing when I walked away
And somebody said, "Hey man, did you see that? His body hit the street with such a beautiful thud"

The imagery in this song is brilliant.
