Didn't know Ed was a big fan!

Don't know if I have heard that one, best one I have heard is from NYC on November 9 2009

Another great version is the one 19 years before that Philly night you mentioned. 10 minutes of brilliance which Bruce released as a B-side to 'Fire' in 1987. Best part about this version is that it led straight into 'Rosalita'.

That was recorded at the 29/12/80 show at Nassau Coliseum. Bruce seriously needs to do a live box of that show... the one from the night before and the one from two nights later on New Year's Eve. He's already released a number of songs from these shows. 'Merry Christmas Baby', 'Rendezvous' (from Tracks), '4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)' (from Live 1975-85) and 'Held Up Without A Gun' (from The Essential Bruce Springsteen) are from the NYE show.

Anyway, here's the LA version (23/10/99):

Even with a bum note or two in the opening guitar solo... Max and Gary drive the song along awesomely.

I'm partial to this version because the full concert was one of the first batch of bootlegs I loved when diving into that world. That, and the sound is great for an audience recording and back in the days of newsgroups I was following the gig live. So maybe my love of it is purely nostalgic.

There are those who'll swear until they're blue in the face that the solo piano version from February 1975 is the best version. But I don't buy it. Sure, it's awesome, but to me you need the full band for the song to be at its best.

Yeah I played that Nassau version after the clip I posted last night, I am not that big on 80s Bruce's voice, but wow it is a good version.

The 23/10/99 sounds a little faster than normal, still good though, and as you mentioned, a very good recording from the audience, particularly for when it was recorded too.

The Main Point version is perfection, I do agree it is better with the band, but when he is alone at the piano at Main Point, you can hear, and feel the emotion in every night he sings.

This is the best version for me

You don't like Bruce's 80s voice?

I don't think it's ever been better than on the 80/81 tour.

The older he gets, the better it gets for me. Was pingin' on the WOAD Tour, just as good now.

Not a fan of the relaxed twang he delves into. Some of the 'Thunder Road' performances from the 1999/2000 tour were just ruined because of it.

For the same reason I can't get into any recent versions of 'Racing in the Street'. He just coasts through them, whereas he used to bleed through that song back in the day.

Not saying he's bad though. He's still got it... just gets lazy every now and then, that's all.

Phew, someone said it.

I'll have to consult my vinyl of Live 75-85 to make the call on the vocals from the early 80s. Stay tuned.

The one from Hyde Park is great IMO, and Paramount Theatre performance. However, the version from Passaic is great.

Agree about Thunder Road, don't like that version at all on the NYC DVD.

This arrived today :D

That's quality. lol the July photo looks like he's trying to be BITUSA Bruce again. :thumbsu:
Haha, this years one is shots from The Promise era, all B&W, don't really like it that much.

One of my all-time favourite singers, Darlene Love and Bruce and his E Streeters at the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame 25th Anniversary Concert (2009):

Love this:

This is so anthemic.

Ripping version too.

Also, does anybody know why he alternates the lyrics in Something In The Night in the final verse? He changes the line "We got burned in one last fight" to "and they burned our cars in one last fight". The original lyric is the latter but it has always fascinated me as to why he does this, and it's not a slight change either.

Has anybody else noticed this? UpForGrabs RussellEbertHandball DrVanNostrand

I didn't pick up the lyric change, but over the years he does that a fair bit. some times its adding a word or two, others its a change.

Found this gem today upon further reading of The Promise of Rock n Roll

Yeah I know he constantly changes a lyric, but this is quite a significant change compared to others, and it's more constant too.

I think The Boss experiments with music, instruments, rhythm, lyrics to keep his music fresh and keep himself interested and engaged. Every song for him is a new experience not just reciting a best of catalogue like some other enduring rock acts.

Do you have The Promise of Rock n Roll book?

And yeah you are right, but the alternating in Something in the Night is very common compared to other songs.

No, a mate of mine has it and I've been meaning to either get it or borrow it from him. Thanks for reminding me! :thumbsu:

Maybe The Boss has never been really definitive about how which lyric he really likes. He recorded one because he had to and at that point in his life it seemed 'right' but he has never really settled on which one sits best with him. I suspect we've all had experiences like that in life.

Cool, I'm 120 pages in, really enjoying it. There is new book coming out this week called Bruce. Will be buying that too :)

That's a fair point, makes sense.

I have a couple of great picture books but I need something I can read. ;)
