Well its almost Super Bowl time.

Given the crap performances from two old fuddies from the 70's at the last 2 AFL GF's, I reckon if Bruce tours in early September as hinted at in the unofficial dates, then he has to turn the plane around in late September and head back to Melbourne and the MCG.

I know being a Boss fan I'm biased but if the AFL GF entertainment department are going to get someone who was big from the 70's and 80's at least get someone who had hits in the '00's and won Grammies in the '00's.

What a great half time show the Boss and E Street Band put on at Super Bowl XLIII, in Tampa on February 2009.

The bloke has hundreds of his his own songs without having to do covers, has the confidence to open with a 35 year old song that barely made the charts, his signature song, a newbie from his album released a couple of weeks earlier and another classic reworked from a baseballer to a footballer for the big game.

I'm sure a few of us could help write his intro script and Australianize it and change a few words from Glory Days to suit Aussie rules.

Could you imagine it at the MCG if you were told to get ready for;

The heart stopping, fun loving,
Hard rocking, booty shaking,
Love making, viagra taking,
Grand Final quaking, history making,
Legendary E Street Band.

The intro is one of the greatest things ever. The recreation of the BToR cover, the guitar toss...

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN FOR THE NEXT 12 MINUTES WE'RE GOING TO BRING THE RIGHTEOUS AND MIGHTY POWER OF THE E-STREET BAND INTO YOUR BEAUTIFUL HOME!

I WANT YOU TO STEP BACK FROM THE GUACAMOLE DIP, I WANT YOU TO PUT THE CHICKEN FINGERS DOWN, AND TURN YOUR TELEVISION ALL THE WAY UP!... AND WHAT I WANNA KNOW IS.... IS THERE ANYBODY ALIVE OUT THERE?! IS THERE ANYBODY ALIVE OUT THERE?!

Seriously, it's beyond epic. No words can do it enough justice. I remember watching it live, I had my television so loud, and I was glued to it, it was an amazing 12 minutes, just absolutely brilliant.

He'd tear up pre match entertainment at the G. Doubt it would ever happen though.

In early 1995 Bruce called the band back together again to record a few songs in NY to put on the new Greatest Hits album. The band was together for only a week or so and the cameras were rolling and in early 1996 they released the Blood Brothers video/dvd.

A few days after the sessions, Molly Meldrum interviewed Bruce about the sessions and his career going back to the early 1970's. Molly was told by Bruce's management that he only had 15 minutes, but Molly being Molly kept asking questions, not your normal ones, it was obvious Molly was a fan and really knew his stuff and Bruce let him go on. He ended up interviewing him for 90 minutes. At the end Bruce's management were pissed off and told him that he couldn't use more than the agreed 15 minutes, so it never came out.

In November 2006 I visited a Bruce fan who had over 100 videos on his personal You Tube video. It contained the interview in 9 or 10 parts each 10 minutes or less and he had only put them up a few weeks earlier. I sent the links to Ford Fairlane but with in 2 months they were no longer on the channel. I'm sure Bruce's management had pulled the pin on them.

Anyway I was looking for them the other day and discovered that the interview is on google as one large 90 minute video. I don't know if you can embed google videos but you can watch the whole doco at the link below and I have copied the notes to the video that do a better job than I did to sum up what happen with Molly. My respect for Molly increased markedly after I watched it. As the summary below says "If any interview could be described as essential, then 1995 Molly Meldrum Interview is it."

Bruce Springsteen The 1995 Molly Meldrum Interview (90minutes)

This astounding interview was conducted in Los Angeles by renowned Australian rock journalist Ian ˜Molly Meldrum as part of the promotional push for the Greatest Hits album in 1995. It is extraordinary on a number of levels, making it undoubtedly one of the most fascinating interviews of Bruces career ever committed to film. Bruce and his management keep tight control of his contact with the media. Questions must be submitted beforehand and follow-ups are generally not allowed. However, Molly Meldrum had other ideas. He was granted just 15 minutes, but was determined to get a much longer interview that he could use for a worldwide syndicated TV special. He was impeccably polite, but refused to relent on his persistent line of questioning. The interview starts in conventional fashion, but Meldrum quickly throws in a question that isnt on the approved list. Bruce seems intrigue, but his minders (who are just off-camera) are less amused. The tension grows and Bruce starts to cast glances to someone else in the room. The questions are unique and insightful, drawing on the in-depth knowledge of someone who is obviously a dedicated fan. Examples include questions on an unreleased album recorded in 1986 and the verse about Bruces father that was deleted from Glory Days. Bruce seems to be caught off-guard at times, but he remains in good spirits throughout. It was admirable that Bruce let the interview continue, despite the fact that he was clearly being signalled to end it. This is probably because Meldrum was smart enough to avoid questions of a personal nature and the issue of bootlegs is cleverly circumvented when it comes up. After a gruelling 90 minutes, the interview is finally called to a halt. Springsteen's management (who are never seen on camera) were apparently furious at what unfolded and they refused to allow Meldrum to use more than the originally allocated 15 minutes, so the TV Special never came to fruition. However, we can now finally get to see the marathon session in its unedited entirety. If any interview could be described as essential, then 1995 Molly Meldrum Interview is it.

15 years later in October 2010 when The Promise was released, Molly got another interview with Bruce. It was for Channel 7's Sunday Night show. Only 8 minutes of the interview and footage from The Promise doco made it to air. In the following 3 video's there is over 40 minutes of interview sliced up with footage form The Promise doco.

At about 7:45 of the last video, as the interview winds up Molly was saying his thanks and then throws in "and aren't you relieved I didn't take 4 hours to do this interview." they laugh a bit, Bruce says you remember that, Molly goes I sure do. Bruce reckons it was the longest 4 hours of his life and finishes off with .."whenever I think of you, I think of pain, my friend" They leave laughing.

In December Backstreets.com put up a video of the first 3 TV interviews Bruce ever gave from around 1978. Bruce's official website picked it up and put it on there front page and its moved near the bottom. At the moment its at the top of

The Darkness tour was a watershed moment for Springsteen in many ways, among them, granting his first real television interviews on the road. Notably, in New York, Cleveland, and Los Angeles, Bruce invited cameras backstage and spoke with local TV news journalists about his audience and his shows. These interviews wound up as feature segments on local news, which paired the backstage chat with live performance footage.

Our gift to you this year are these three feature interview segments just as they aired in 1978. The video offers the broadcast news appearances in best-ever quality (though still showing some ill effects of being 33-year-old footage as expected). The 16-minute compilation features:

* WABC New York with Joel Siegel (Madison Square Garden, August 21, 1978)

* WDVM Washington, DC "The 9 Muses" segment with Henry Tenenbaum (interview from Richfield, OH Largo, MD, backstage at the Capital Centre; footage from Largo, MD, August 15, 1978)

*KABC Los Angeles with JJ Jackson, Bruce's first-ever televised interview (The Forum, July 7, 1978)

Special thanks to the Dick Wingate Archives for providing the video and the Brucebase Wiki for source info.

The last interview is after the show at the Roxy Theatre not The Forum July 7, 1978. It was this show that I talked about in my earlier post which I have a bootleg copy on tape and produced 8 of the first 11 songs on the LIVE/1975-85 triple CD box set.

Bruce "Out in the Street" with a live performance with a local busker out in the streets in Copenhagen 23-07-1988 a couple of days before his gig in Copenhagen on his Tunnel of Love tour.

"Bruce Springsteen performing I'm on Fire, the River and Dancing in the Dark in the Streets of Copenhagen."

What a thrill it must have been for the local busker and the crowd that where there.

A beautiful tribute by NBC news anchor Brian Williams and fellow New Jerseyan to the big man the day he died on the network new broadcast.

Yep Cruyff I enjoyed that and his humble knockabout normal bloke shines thru, as he admits he wasn't interested in being a rockstar, but a story teller in the middle of the Part I video he did with Molly in 2010.

Bono mentions that in his induction speech for Bruce into the rock 'n' roll hall of fame.

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band have far too much talent, ability and musical style to ever be considered for our games biggest day.

You blokes are dreaming.

Bring Back Meatloaf/Angry Anderson/Jet/any other shit that has ever been on.
Bring Back Meatloaf/Angry Anderson/Jet/any other shit that has ever been on.
Bring Back Meatloaf/Angry Anderson/Jet/any other shit that has ever been on.
Bring Back Meatloaf/Angry Anderson/Jet/any other shit that has ever been on.

Etc etc you get the drift.

At 62, you'd think he'll need a rest after 51 shows in 136 days.

I think he hinted at that after he sang Out in the Street at Hyde Park in 2009. ;)

Oh wow. What a night it was.

I was dripping by the end of it. My shirt was wet, I was going mental. I can't imagine what I would be like if I actually saw the real Bruce.

It was ****ing nuts, guys. Born To Run stole the night, amazing!

Not sure how the live/delayed You Tube works, but should be able to watch it delayed. I think this is the Grammy's channel

http://www.youtube.com/user/TheGRAMMYs?blend=1&ob=0

Last year it was on Fox 8. Either Channel 9 or 10 will have them from about 9pm Monday, although they could use there SD/HD channels. The electronic guides only go up to Friday at the moment so give it a couple of days when Monday 13th comes up and check then.

I recently discovered Backstreets after buying the born to run album. It's now my favorite song of his. Curiously it took about three or four listens of the album before it 'sunk in', but when it did it was like Joliet Jake Blues at the James Brown sermon

Do you know where Backstreets polled in my rankings Sloth? ;)

A true epic. And good work at buying BToR.

yeah i just went back and read the whole thread :)

also trying to learn the intro of Backstreets on piano, it is indeed epic

Firstly Cruyff, thanks for the awesome thread. Kudos to you.

Have been a massive Bruce fan all my life, seen him play every time he has been in Australia

THE BEST live performer I have seen.

Have you put the head phones on and had a listen to The Hitter from the Devils & Dust album?

Springsteen song writing at it's finest.

Captures everything you could write in a novel with an acoustic guitar and a microphone.
