68) The River
Album: The River (1980)

There is something about The River that words can’t do justice unless you’ve seen it live. When you hear those opening notes on the harmonica accompanied by the 12 string acoustic guitar, you get a sense of everyone is feeling the same. Bruce sings the opening couple of lines, and then if you’re part of the crowd, you belt it out at the top of your lungs along with everyone else. It’s a feeling you can’t really describe unless you’ve experienced it yourself.

Bruce’s falsetto is at its peak on this song and hearing him wail to close the song out is breathtaking.

While being at number 68 may seem like I am doing The River a huge injustice, let me just say it is a truly magnificent song that I am glad I had the privilege of hearing twice and being able to sing in unison with 15,000 other people.

 
67) Because The Night

Love is a banquet upon which we feed

Personally, this song has seen inconsistent views with me. When I first heard it, I thought it was okay, nothing special. It would sit in my playlist and not really garner many plays. I think it’s because the only version I had was 75-85 version. And for me, I prefer Bruce’s voice more as he got older.

Then the Darkness Box Set came out and the original was on there. I listened to it the whole way through and discovered it really is a great song. I know this completely contradicts what I said about Bruce’s voice. I have just never been that big on his 75-85 voice, even though many think it’s when he sounded best.

I managed to find a bootleg version from the WOAD Tour and it achieves some plays here and there.

Love the piano intro, it doesn’t as delicate as songs like Jungleland or Incident. It has a bit of semi aggression about it. Bruce’s vocal does not feel forced at all and it is an absolutely ripping performance vocally. Nils shines yet again. in absolutely electric solo. Seeing the song live, you really get to feel the power of the song that can’t be translated properly over a computer screen. It is full of power and fist pumping is rife.

I am surprised Bruce gave this to Patti Smith to be honest. Another song that would have been at home on Darkness.

66) Trapped

Good will conquer evil and the truth will set me free

Yeah, I know, it’s not really a Springsteen song, but he’s released it so it gets the nod in my book.

Originally written by Jimmy Cliff, it seems to be very popular amongst Springsteen fans.

The first recollection I have of this song, I would have been about 15. My dad came home from work one day and said he’d heard a song by Springsteen on the radio. He managed to remember the “But now I’m trapped” line and I was able to do search the lyrics and I found it.

I’ve never really loved this song to be honest, but at the same time, I have never really had any beef with it. I find myself singing (if you can call it that) at the top of my lungs during the chorus without a worry in the world.

The Big Man’s solo in this is kick ass. You can tell he is really going for it, and he definitely owns it, and just like that, we’re back to how the song started, then we get one final chance to test our lungs.

 
65) Prove It All Night
Album: Darkness On The Edge of Town (1978)

Much like other tracks on Darkness, Prove It All Night hits you with an unrelenting force from the opening bars. It is angry, it makes me feel angry and you can hear the fire burning in Bruce’s gut with his conviction in the lyrics.

One thing I do wonder though is how the song would go down in Bruce history if the’78 version was on the record. When he started doing that at live shows, it was obviously a huge surprise, and if you’re anything like me, you feel lucky to have witnessed it at a show. Obviously if it was on the record it would hold nowhere near its historical wow factor, but on the other hand, it would partially qualify as an ‘epic.’

For me, it is well superior and I was lucky enough to experience it live. The searing guitar intro is unbelievable the sheer power that Bruce conjures out of his guitar is like poetry in motion.

While it may not be my favourite song off Darkness, I have grown to appreciate it more over the last year or so. The breakdown in the middle is awesome, kind of reminds of Something In The Night where it’s just Bruce and Max’s bass drum (although we must remember that on Something In The Night the floor toms make an appearance too).

Just had to include the '78 intro video. Beast.

 
64) Pay Me My Money Down
Album: The Seeger Sessions

I’m going to be honest. I do not like The Seeger Sessions album at all. It is far too folky and I just think there is too much going on. I don’t like the sound, I don’t like Bruce’s voice and if the whole thing never happened, it wouldn’t be of much loss to me. However… there is something I do like on that album, and that is Pay Me My Money Down.

When I heard it at the shows on this current tour, it had me smiling the whole song, and it’s a song you can’t help but enjoy. It is extravagant, it is fun, it is silly, it’s loose, it’s everything that encompasses Bruce and The E-Street Band. The horns are fantastic, the accordion, all of it just comes together so well and the result is the final product. The key change takes it up a notch, and seeing the band walk around the arena when it’s done live is pretty awesome. You can see how much the horn players enjoy it. And rightly so. A very fun song and much better than the alternatives that are in rotation in its place in the set – Working On A Highway and Open All Night.

Tell us what you thought. It was fantastic, although I can't work out how some of the stories managed to get in when there seems to be many better "rejected" anecdotes on Youtube. It was sequenced brilliantly, as I was absolutely pumped and hanging to see and hear some live stuff by the time the stories were over. The epilogue was a really nice touch.

It's just made me so, so keen to see him again.
 
I saw it on Sunday. Didn't think much of it at all. Some deadset weirdos on there. Surely it could've been made better.
