that would be a great show opener (high hopes)
sounds great, will have to seek out the original

He opened the 2nd Brisbane show with it and then rolled on to the promised land

Just listening to the new version of High Hopes, it's great Bruce has realised just how brilliant the live performances of the song on the Aussie tour were. I'd never heard (or heard of) the song before I heard it at Brisbane 1, but was blown away instantly. By the time I heard it at the Melbourne shows, it was a favourite in the set. I just belonged. So it's great we've now got a studio version of the 2013 incarnation. This new version isn't quite as powerful and dynamic as the live versions earlier in the year, but it blows his 1995 version out of the water (although it must be said they are completely different in arrangement). The horns in the refrain are the real match-winner here.

....

It's just a great song, 'nuff said.

Agree that its a lot better than the blood brothers version but it just doesn't have the punch with the brass section compared to the 2 shows I saw it in, especially the 2nd Sydney show. He only played it at Brisbane 2 not 1,- opened the show with it.

Just scored a GA ticket for Brisbane!!!!!!!!! Come at me mothergooses.

Wanted to grab another one, but went back to "allocation exhausted" straight away

Watched Springsteen and I on SBS the other night, watched it again online. There are a few naff stories in there (some terribly stereotypically American) but some beauties. Love the Philly Elvis.

Because it's all about personal taste I have to admit I don't share some of the enthusiasm for High Hopes. It's ok but there would be 100 Boss songs I would prefer to hear.

Speaking of the Philly Elvis, the Boss does a great cover of Heartbreak Hotel that I have a version of from the 1980s. Wouldn't mind him slipping that into his Adelaide concerts. ;)

Yeah I'm not digging High Hopes. That might be the song I pull my phone/camera out and snap some pictures during.

High Hopes live is so much better than the recorded version, but I know what you mean.

True, 12 months ago if you had said Tom Joad to me I would have smiled patiently. Now my eyes bug out, I grin like Jack Nicholson and start playing insane air guitar! :D

I feel exactly the same way, but it's nigh on impossible to compare GOTJ to High Hopes. No matter how well they play it live, I'm not going to get that same feeling that I get when I hear that first E Minor chord ring out at the start of GOTJ, know what we have to come over the next 8-9 minutes.

I'll never get that feeling with High Hopes, it just doesn't do it for me at all.

It was more a joking comparison (hence the big smilie) but I meant more if Bruce ramped it up like he did TJ. Still even then lyrically TJ is more powerful and lends itself to the treatment.

In the end I'd prefer to hear Reason to Believe over High Hopes.

High Hopes is ******* ace, get your head checked paddy18!

This. A few of the unfortunate locals in Dunedin have caught me singing it to myself over the past few mornings around the quiet city streets.

It's not as powerful as the live versions, but a very entertaining listen nonetheless. I think it's the horns that don't quite punch as hard when recorded in the studio.

Yeah, it's a tune that has already polarised the fans. It's not that I hate it, there's just a whole heap of other tunes that I didn't get to see last time that I would much prefer to witness live.

I actually prefer the studio version and while I think that Bruce's vocal is amazing, I've just never, ever been into the whole Latin American genre at all...so it's not a Bruce thing. However, I must confess to sneakily singing along to Ricky Martin's Cup of Life and LaVidaLoca :)

It would be the same if Bruce did a jazz or swing tune......I would hate it, no matter how well he sung it.

I've really tried to like High Hopes, I really have. It's a bit like how I have really tried to like the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings the same way as my son does.....it's just not happening at the moment. Maybe it will grow on me yet and I'm sure that I will enjoy it at the 4 gigs I'll see in Adelaide and Melbourne.

What I would desperately love to see live from the new album is a huge, epic version of American Skin with Nils and Bruce shredding their guitars and conveying all of the emotion from the Live in NYC version.

That's probably number 1 on my wish list for the upcoming gigs actually....and Backstreets....and Ties that Bind

ah yeah, the system migration didn't carry them over but it's certainly a great performance the second video.

thanks for re-posting them for me!

Eddie Vedder is doing a solo tour at the same time Bruce is here. He plays Melbourne around the same time Bruce does. (plays the same night as AAMI 2) Now that would be an epic duet if he was in town with nothing to do the night of the first concert at AAMI.

I fly out of Melbourne the day of his second gig. Damn it.
