I don't usually particularly mind his calling, but he put two of the worst calls on a single day together on Classic day at Sandown.

First was in the Heffernan stakes. At the 150m, Tesbury Jack was 2 lengths clear and powering away. But Martin calls it as "but now Megadeal gets out and goes after it quickly" as if it were a $1.20 favourite chasing down a 20/1 shot, when it clearly wouldn't have won even if it were Bernborough. It's obvious who he backed.

Then, the 100 times worse than the Heffernan, was the actual Classic itself. Casual Pass was flying at Show Barry and Gallant Guru, but:

a) He didn't call Casual Pass once.

b) He stumbed plenty of times in the last 100m, to a point where 50m past the post he was still trying to recount what he'd meant to say before they hit the line. All he said following that was "it's close".

As I said, I don't usually mind him, but he had a bloody shocker on Saturday.

He also got Show Barry & Brom Felinity mixed up in the last 250m.

Ok,their colours are vaguely similar but he'd had over 2000m to know where they were in the run. Had BF diving through on the rail when it was dropping out.

Dont think he's recovered from the Cox Plate

yeah I agree sainter...
Couldn't believe he didn't call casual pass when he got within a head.
Also, it wasn't the closest photo ever- would've been nice to hear him stick his neck out (if you'll excuse the pun) and say who he thought had won.

Oh well, at least they weren't as bad as the calls of a certain Sydney caller they brought down for the Flemington carnival about 5 years ago....god they were some shockers.

I think what he'd done is realised he mixed Show Barry and Brom Felinity up and picked the worst moment to look closer to see which horse it actually was. Because of this he missed Casual Pass flying down the outside and probably wasn't concentrating on the photo finish.

It's not like he's been flat out lately!!!!

He called only half the card on Cox Plate day, shared racecalling during the whole VRC carnival with Terry Bailey and never calls the Moonee Valley night meetings (despite being the Moonee Valley on course racecaller) or many country meetings nowadays.

Martin's calls on Saturday didn't worry me cos I was on course.

Ha ha, yeah he had a Barry Croker on Saturday!

My old man said to me on Saturday that he should give the game away, very ordinary effort!

As you said, he was mumbling & just seemed out of sorts.

But, he has been a top performer for many a year so you have to show some leniency to the guy.

In the 2002 cox plate he called northerly lonhro coming round the turn. lonhro wears cerise, northerly yellow and black, lonhro was out the back going nowhere whereas northerly was turning the screws on the best racing field ever assembled in the southern hemisphere.

Greg Miles also made a mess of the Gallant Guru/Casual Pass finish on TABradio that we get here in Adelaide. I have not seen the vision, assumed they were spread across the track, which can make life difficult for callers.

Greg Miles just made a big mess of R5 at Ballarat as well. Called Reliability as been two lengths clear and leading the whole way down the straight, before suddenly announcing Imagining was the winner, despite him not calling him since the 1000m mark!

Greg Miles is in the immortality of racing callers as far as I'm concerned, I couldn't bag him if I tried.
Yeah, he probably gets away with a bit more than some other callers do, he was certainly a lot better caller five years ago than he is today.

I didn't hear the Ballarat call today but I went to the TAB website to listen to the replay, amazingly its not there. Every single race from everywhere else today is, but not Ballarat Race 5!!! Must have been some sort of stuff up with the call!

Funny how the bloke who called the Cox Plate never got another gig, not surprising considering he made the big call on El Segundo winning.
Any replays of that race with commentary tarnished.

I take it you are talking about the racecaller who did the Cox Plate on Channel 7. I don't know his name but I know he was visiting from overseas. I think he is a top class caller in Hong Kong. I'm sure someone knows the story.

He had a contract with the VRC to host the form talk on course at Flemington.

Raphael retired from calling in Hong Kong because he wanted to spend more time with his family in Australia. He was doing the Spring Carnival as a guest, but he's world class and a top caller, so I'd love to see him working here full time.
