Carlton didn't want to let him go but didn't want to appear insensitive to his wishes so they asked for a price they knew we would be unwilling to pay.

That's their right, he was contracted but to suggest Adelaide "didn't offer anything decent" is just wrong, we offered what we (and by many reports, what most industry professionals) felt was a fair deal.

They refused it and that's fine, again, it's their right to hold him to his contract.

Was anything else offered?

Surely Lyons, pick 13 and a 3rd rounder been sufficient. Maybe an exchange of later picks.

Or pick 13 and a 2nd rounder this year or next, even with an exchange of later picks again. Could have been a real win/win trade that benefits both teams.

Just a weird one, he's a quality player but Carlton could have also put them selves in a good draft position for there next premiership tip.

We would have gone backwards next year and of course there would have been howls of laughter as we lost another decent player for an average return.

It's time to get very stingy when trading away talent. He was never going for anything less than way over generally perceived value.

His old man absolutely hates Port through the SANFL old days. Salary cap or not, he wouldnt ever play for the club. Plus we've got Aaron Young. Only enough space for 1 man bun in the salary cap.

Why would that matter? The Port Magpies are a totally different club?!?!

Given that Gibbs signed his current contract prior to having the kid things change massively once you become parents, especially first time parents.

Carlton are dogs IMO. Pick 13 + Lyons was a decent offer.
LOL no its not, I would have been seething if we took that offer.

Thankfully our football club isn't run by someone like you .

Who are these industry professionals that said what Adelaide offered was a fair deal? Riccuito, Cornes, Justin Reid?

His old man was the softest of the soft. So of course he fit in perfectly at Glenelg.

They can try again next year and maybe the Crows have learnt a thing Two about acquiring a high profile and talented contracted player.
It won't hurt us too much thought because after the final large player clean -out and trading out Gibbs we'll have plenty of cap space to pursue Fyfe.
Very astute move by Silvagni he earn this keep in one manuvor.
Go Blues

As a Carlton supporter I am pleasantly surprised that we held our ground and didn't gift wrap Adelaide another quality player.

For those who criticise Carlton for not accepting what they perceive to be fair value the point is moot because Gibbs being a contracted and valued player means that Carlton has the right to determine his value.

I am also very pleased that Carlton stood up to the WAG/family card which is sadly becoming more persuasive in the increasingly feminine AFL climate.

So because I'm an Adelaide supporter the people I referred to must have been linked to Adelaide? If you'd read anything being reported on the AFL website it was mentioned over and over that many believed our offer to be reasonable.

Not everyone is so one-eyed, try it sometime.

While disappointed that Adelaide didn't land Gibbs, that in itself didn't annoy me so much (I understand why Carlton held firm, and I'm glad Adelaide didn't hand over 2 x First Round picks.

But what I absolutely livid with is the fact that Adelaide did sweet F all for the rest of the trade period and actively depleted our squad and did not improve our draft position one iota...

Lyons is a better player than the peanuts he was sold for

Justin Reid would not even say what the final offer was so how is anyone meant to make a judgement on whether it is reasonable.

A lot of the press seems to be positive that Carlton took a stand against clubs trying to poach players with multiple years left on their contract. I believe Mark Bickley was quite outspoken on Adelaide not pulling the trigger and playing safe again.
