There is no misconception. Inevitably if you trade an A-grader out, particularly one as important as Gibbs, you want to be compensated properly.

Yes, Pick 13 and Lyons is slight unders and why should we accept slight unders? Adelaide are making the play and to this stage have sat on their hands and waited for us to fold instead of getting creative and grasping something else that would be of use to us. Smacks of entitlement and intimidation.

No one has stated that 13 + Lyons is fair value for Gibbs

But what if the deal was:

In 13+2017 1st round + Lyons
Out Gibbs + 25

Would you say no to that deal because Lyons was included?

Who said he can't get better?

I agree with getting games into Cuningham

How can you say he doesn't add value if SOS would be satisfied with a 1st & 2nd round as the main portion of a deal? Perhaps you should add up the games of Graham, Thomas, Everitt & Lamb this year, he would play in front of those guys
You make a fair point.

Gibbs has consistently delivered quality output over the past 10 years, whereas Lyons has played 5 seasons for 55 games and seems to have had a breakout year in 2016 - doubling his average possessions to 22, tackles to 5, and clearances to 5 a game. Comparisons with Gibbs is a bit unfair, we're not talking about a straight swap.

But comparing his output in 2016 with some of our other midfielders/forwards, Lyons would be a significant upgrade on what Everitt, Lamb, Thomas or Sumner delivered in 2016. Don't get me wrong I'd prefer someone like McGovern (which won't happen) and #13, but I'm not sure we should be too hasty to dismiss a 55 gamer who can play in the midfieldforward, and had a better year than a half a dozen of our players.

Unless they offered that before lunch on the opening day of trade week, I'd say no to it. If they don't pony up by cob Tues I wouldn't even speak to them.

Appreciate your thoughts.

Wonder what people thought of Simpson in the first 4 or 5 seasons

Is Lyons of any interest, or just a name thrown up by Adelaide?

I wouldn't be averse to bringing him in as replacement depth for Tutt and Armfield but understand pick 13 alone might leave us asking for a second rounder.

I wouldn't approach them, but I would always listen to what they have to offer

Oh I'd listen, I'd just wouldn't trade him. I'd give them a deadline relatively early in the week beyond which no offers will be accepted, and be prepared to stick to that.

Just passing some time till Monday. All light hearted
If you think he's just been sitting on the half forward line you haven't been watching him play.

He's also played midfield. He is averaging only 5 possessions less s game than Gibbs, only 50 metres gained less a game but more contested possessions.
Just keep Lyons then we keep Gibbs we don't lose a thing, you lose everything

Heres my take on the whole situation. Sos , who imo is a bit restless as a list manager ( not always a bad thing) put the Gibbs initial rumour of a few months ago out there to see there were any nibbles. Gibbs in the meantime was constantly being asked and constantly denying that he was leaving. Then when it was found out to have a certain basis of truth to it, Gibbs and his management tried to take his future into his own hamds, along with the implicit support of the AFLPA, by approaching his club of choice to encourage them to enter the fray. Sort of a " if i am going to be shopped around, then I am going to be proactive and try to get to my next best alternative" i think Gibbs is being unfairly portrayed by the media as the protagonist in this trade, when it really is Sos. And we know that the media LOVE to sensationalise things. Unfortunately we are all swallowing the bs being peddled by media street, and turning on bryce. Gibbs has been a great servant and clubman, and i think we should keep an open mind about his staying or departure. Some of the venom being spat around regarding him leaving is unbeleivable.

Adelaide are genuinely interested, and sure are trying to take advantage of the situation , by negotiating with a opening low ball offer. I think if they believe that bryce is a genuine key to a premiership, then they will move heaven and earth to get him. There us no doubt that they need extra midfield class and bryce is that. He will shine brighter at the crows than he ever did with us. He is durable, at his peak and a very flexible player. He can play defensively, midfield, attacking, and is a great tackler. We have just seen how how can roost the ball.
What js he worth? Given that he is at his peak, in a position that we are weak in, i think this shows how sos feels- we arent going to really challenge in the next 2-3 years, so better to maximise the value of one of our best players and cash in IF WE CAN. I think sos wants 2 first round picks and if he doesnt get it or if adelaide wont trade a good forward to us, then the deal just doesnt get done. Period.
So lets just sit back, enjoy the sos show, and see where it leads. I dont think some half baked deal involving a good ordinary player like Lyons will excite sos one iota . The next step is for adelaide to find the forward/ pick that we want, or the deal is off. AFC. Ball court yours

I think there is a misconception amongst some that because we lose an A Grade player, we have to get an A Grader back.

Lyons and pick 13 is slight unders for Gibbs, but not the highway robbery some are making out, but if we can get another second rounder thrown in too, i'd take the deal, this whole negotiating from a position of strength stance is a load of cobbers imo,

Freeing up a sizeable chunk of the salary cap with Gibbs' departure is another fringe benefit.
No

Also, we were at cap minimum, with two senior players having just retired.

To be fair to Adelaide, its pretty difficult for them to stump up another first round pick without giving away a required player.

In all honesty,.things would go much more swimmingly if GWS got involved, but they are being annoyingly obstinate.

They think they are challenging for a flag.

People/defenders will have worked out Josh Jenkins by next year. I also believe Taylor Walker's output has been limited by injury- sore foot, knee etc. 12 games and he came 5th in their b&f.
Their midfield doesn't bat deep in A grade talent...even if Gibbs goes there.
Put a tagger on Sloane. West Coast humbled them in round 23 with Sloane not there.
West Coast have a much better midfield, so too GWS, so too Bulldogs, so too Sydney...so really they are about 5th in row. If that is worth leaving a club for ...for a one in five chance. So be it.
Nevertheless, crazy things can happy...so who knows maybe they have a better shot than 1 in 5. I am hoping otherwise and will be going for GWS or West Coast next year. The best of a rotten bunch of clubs.
Except there are forwards and defenders who make up a team you know. Not just mids.

If AFC really wants Gibbs, they will have to pay overs, it's how it works

Probably. Which is why it's still a very good chance this trade doesn't happen. Because I don't think the Crows will pay overs (well maybe marginal overs). Our list is far from old so it's not like it's 2017 or bust.

That said, I'd be really surprised if your list management team didn't see this as a win/win.
Carlton are into their 2nd year of a serious rebuild. The experts often say to complete a genuine rebuild you need multiple picks inside the top 20-30 picks.

Of the older guys who may not feature in a potential Carlton premiership, surely Gibbs holds the currency for you. Even if only pick 13 & steak knives. I know if it was AFC our bigfooty board would be super keen to trade out one of our gun older players if a premiership wasn't within his reach.
