you have not read our thread.

what are our reasons for wanting what we did? why do we value him so highly? why do think so little of the crows efforts. why was it better to keep him fro our overall development. Actually read and comprehend before trying to engage - unless of course you cant understand?

you've read nothing. all your points have been answered multiple times alas your just trying to lift your post count up.

And when did our list Manager change his name?
Oh gee I forgot the g
You value him so highly because it's been so long since you have had a decent player you have forgotten what one actually is. If you want a player who doesn't want to be at your club developing the new players you'll just get players who develop into average players like Gibbs.
Carlton can get overly excited about their unproven draft picks that every club has, think Silvagni is some sort of guru for taking back all these GWS players they don't want but let's not pretend Gibbs is anything more than your average, stock standard footballer who IMO wasn't even close to what was being asked for him.
And before you get so touchy about spelling you might want to concentrate on your own.

Actually Marchbank is probably one they would have gone either way with,so one out of nine....Silvagni,what a guru.
Nope. You don't know what you're talking about. GWS certainly did not want to lose Marchbank.

As for nine players, wrong again. SOS has brought in seven players from GWS and is using the little currency he has - list and salary cap space - to get discounts on targeted players. It's a smart strategy while the Blues list is in a state of transition. You don't think it's smart, which is fine, but you've already proven you don't actually know much about it.

I don't think most people appreciate nor understand what was done and why, in respect to the GWS players..........some Carlton supporters included.

A couple are likely to drop off at next years end, whilst we maintained our minimum TPP through the course of the last 2 years.
Great strategy as far as I'm concerned and in the meantime we also hauled in at least 3 best 22 players, whilst losing very little at the trade table.

By the way: What has all this got to do with Gibbs, anyway?

Darthbards is the one who started a rubbish rumour about SOS and Bolton feuding over SOS bringing in GWS 'duds'. He is on an anti-SOS crusade and drops it into most threads when Carlton are mentioned.

That's what happens when you win a Premiership. Everyone becomes a black belt. :)

I can understand Coach and List Manager not always seeing eye to eye. That would be the case everywhere.

People also don't get that GWS were holding out for the Gibbs trade to get that pick for Marchbank. The net result would have been Gibbs for Geelong's 2017 1st rounder which does nothing for our immediate development.
Which is what I've been harping on about - Reid's biggest mistake was the early announcement. Let his ego get in the way of a deal. The man needs to learn the nuance of negotiation.

Very good point ODN. Giants & Crows were working together on this one however the guru effectively derailed their efforts at collusion.

Lets not forget that Roo was the board member with responsibility for the footy department and was obviously the senior person after nobles departure.

Its why i refer to them as dumb (reid) and dumber (roo).

Very good article by Rohan Connolly.
http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-ne...request-for-a-trade-home-20161219-gtedha.html

Some really postive items that come out:
  • gibba cant understand why dumb made the statement
  • its been something being considered for 12 months which supports my theory from day one that crows have been trying to destabilize like they did with eddie, for the last year or so.
  • Blues were blind sided by dumbs statement after they had previously worked on trying to facilitate a trade.
  • loves the club and has complete buy in.
  • the family issues were overblown by crows and lozza is coping really well.
  • the complete buy in translates to improving his own standards which means there is plenty of upside in young gibba.
Once again verifies what many have thought all along we have retained an absolute star with plenty of years and improvement in him.

Great work sos and the team though it was clearly made easier by the work of dumb and dumber.

Lol,since when are Carlton 'big boys'? It's not the VFL anymore,in the AFL world Carlton are as close to a nothing club as there is,and their continual performances and decisions reflect this.
Anyway, not sure either club was rag dolled around. Carlton were being greedy and Adelaide weren't that interested in paying overs for a good kind of player who is a long, long way from being great or worth what was being asked.
We had over 50.000k members after winning the wooden spoon, there are very few clubs in the AFL that could pull those kind of numbers.
We are just starting to find our way on field and are building some serious young talent, make no mistake Carlton are still a massive club.

The thing is when you chase a player that is still under contract you have to pay overs or the deal most likely doesn't get done, this is a concept so many people just don't seem to understand.

"They [the officials] were obviously a bit shocked and took a bit of time to digest it. They didn't want me to go, but they respected my decision. They were happy to facilitate a trade, but it had to be the right one and they weren't going to go out of their way to get something done. Whoever wanted that trade had to come to them with a pretty significant deal and while they were happy to do it, they weren't going to go and push for it. But they made that clear from the start."

But after weeks of bartering, Adelaide never really came close to satisfying Carlton's requirements. And the conclusion to the drawn-out saga was for Gibbs complicated by the fact that as trade period concluded, he was on a flight to the United States for a holiday with half-a-dozen of what for all he knew, might now be former teammates.

Mate, Eddie was un-contracted at the end of 2013 and, as was Daisy Thomas who your club was balls deep into getting and got, would you call that destabilization also?

Daisy wasn't playing as he was injured. Crows were in to Eddie 18 months out.

If Gibbs still wants to go at the end of '17 and has had a similar year to '16, woud be more than happy to let him go for a pick in the teens and some steak knives.

He may well be 'encouraged' out the door if it hypothetically gave us the best shot at acquiring one or more of Hopper, Shiel or Wright.

Well if you liked 'leading-goalkicker' Matty Wright and good ol' Sammy Kerridge then I am sure we can find another gun player to boost your ranks. How about *elite defender Jake Kelly? OR gun mid CEY? Maybe some seasoned experience with David Mackay? Heck you can have one of those AND our 2nd round pick. Don't worry, we are doing you a favour by freeing up salary cap space so you can target a gun player.

There was nothing to destabilise.
Ok, so by your theory, Hawthorn destabilized Sydney, who finished minor premiers and played in the GF, by going after Tom Mitchell. Would I be correct in saying that as they where stuck into him for 18 months also?

Firstly it is not my theory. You drew a correlation between Betts and Thomas suggesting if one was destabilised, then so was the other. I merely gave you a reason why Thomas wasn't destabilised.

However we can add to this somewhat.

Betts had an average year in 2013. He was well down on his previous form. Was he destabilised? Possibly.

Mitchell was one of the best on ground in the GF. He fought out his year. I question whether Hawthorn had been in to him that long in any meaningful way. Carlton had been linked to him more than any team for 3 years.

Chris Yarran, approached mid season. Did not try at all for most of the rest of the season. Sure, he had some issues going on but clearly checked out.

Lachie Henderson, same thing. Checked out and asked for a trade before the season ended.

Jarrad Waite, played terribly and then got an offer and he played some of his best football to end his time with us. Not destabilised but reinvigorated.

This is what I consider destabilising. Intended or not, there is no doubt some are destablised by early approaches.
