Personally I am fairly certain that the rumours about his gambling debts are true.

When that story came to light about players having significant gambling debts, the general consensus going around was that two of players in question were Gibbs and Beams.

The media clearly know the identity of the players because they mentioned that two of them were big name players (1 from a Vic club and the other from a non Vic club) and that both weren't playing that particular week.

I think all the other rumours going around about Gibbs are most probably crap, but sadly I think the one about him being a gambling addict is true.

Hey guys i heard a rumour today (Read a thread on bigfooty authored by someone that likely has their affairs administrated by the public trustee) that Gibbs is the one that sunk those oil tankers off Iran. This is why he hasn't been playing and the tankers were registered in the Virgin Islands and Kane Kornes is a virgin so that is why the media isn't releasing the story.

Gotta love all the mouth breathers with their inside sources. Only inside source is that in the fridge and that in their own arses.
Sauce does not go in the fridge, argument is invalid.

When it's the same rumour popping up you know it's Chinese whispers, not Intel. That Beams one started on Twitter, then it spreads from there with it being sourced information.

People linking Gibbs non-AFL selection to an alledged gambling issue, aren’t fully understanding what addiction is.

First of all, his AFL form although not excellent, has been better than half our footy team (during the games he played this year).

If indeed he is simply in debt, how is selecting him in SANFL/AFL going to change that? He’s still going to be paid according to his contract!

If his debt is due to a gambling addiction, then by the definition, he won’t be able to focus on his task/job and will flounder if he keeps playing. Yet, he’s still playing in the SANFL and performing in the top 5 or so players. Also if his head is in a mess, then the footy club should give him some time off, which has yet to happen.

I think we shouldn't be looking at his form vs all the other players. I think its more to do with his form vs the other midfielders. And unfortunately for him their are a lot of guys in the midfield who are playing their/his role at a very high level.

Whether or not their is anything to the gambling debt rumors, he still needs to be the best in his position to get in the side. And right now CEY and Greenwood are both holding him out of that spot

I'm not sure you fully understand that every single person reacts and handles addiction differently.

I've known people who have had both alcohol and gambling additions who were fantastic at their job so your last sentence is off too.

For the record, I call BS on the Gibbs rumours.

I'm also not convinced he plays well off hb. Play him as a fwd with mid rotations.

And I’m not sure you understand my point. Gibbs is still performing well at elite level. Even 30 disposals in SANFL is not what you would call “not doing your job”.

So there are 2 separate arguments which people are merging as one.

Is his form warrant AFL selection?
The answer is “maybe, maybe not”, “Greenwood, CEY holding out his spot” etc.

Is gambling addiction the cause of his form slump?
If it is then he should be given the right counseling, some time off to focus on the root of the problem.

If gambling is a side issue (ie. not affecting his form) then it’s an issue between him and his debt collector. Not really our business.

Time off is often counter-productive in management of mental health problems, especially when boredom and having excess time is an enabler for addiction.

Way too simplistic to say he needs time off.

Only thing vaguely reasonable is that someone knows what is going on, and that's not us. The people that know have probably made reasoned decisions for their management actions (either purely football-related or dealing with cause and consequences of addiction).
