Same coaches that gifted Mackay 200+ games?

Some thing isn't right, no way was he close to the worst last week.

Sometimes it's not about being the worst.

Somestimes it's "We told you to play X way and make sure you did Y things, you failed to do so"

If Gibbs was failing to play the way the coaches wanted him to play, to the gameplan they set him.. that's 100% sufficient to drop him.

To think of those wasted 1st rounders could of had Tim Kelly and Jack Higgins/Ed Richards on our list instead.

Think Fagan has a LOT to answer for with his interferance in list management and demand we 'get it done' with no regard to price.

He overstepped his bounds big time and it has bitten us hard.

CEOs should stay out of that sort of shit, particularly CEOs who don't know AFL.

I’d not have dropped him at all. I’d rather a cruising Gibbs than Mackay being largely ineffective while giving it his all. I’d suggest it’s his intensity that they’re unhappy with, but I can’t see a career habit changing 1.3 years into a comfortable 4 year deal.

Would have been a board instruction. Has Chappy’s fingerprints all over it.

The story is that those words came directly from Fagans mouth.

If the board was pushing him regarding that, he had a right as a CEO to push back but failed to do so.

Listening to coaching interviews following the game it seems pretty obvious to me that Gibbs is not following club instructions or the club game plan. He might be getting x amount of kicks but if he not holding his opponent accountable and doing the team thing he will get dropped. To say he was good last week is us obviously looking at it from an outsiders point of view without knowing what his instructions were. Perhaps he looked good because he chased kicks rather than followed instructions. Reading between the lines that seems to be the case.

To be fair to Fagan he actually made that comment after SOS had reneged on the original deal that was agreed.

At that point we had already committed to giving at 2 first rounders, Fagan telling them to get the deal done related to us giving Carlton our 2018 2nd round pick as part of the deal.

So basically he told them to double down on overpaying... not sure how that makes it better?

To put it into context we'd just been embarrassed in the GF and then lost both Lever and Cameron. The club desperately needed a positive PR spin during that trade period.

I think once we hit the point of no return, I don't think the club could have afforded another embarrassment so it was in for a penny, in for a pound.

Yes I was at game and he was one that kept us in game early and did well overall, so I can't get it.
We need players that have real skills rather than many of plodders we have.

Yep I think you and me were at the same game. There were a few others that had little of no impact on the game.....
Gibbs had 22disp, 7 marks, 5 tackles, 2 goals.
Atkins 16d, 8m, 1t, 1g,
Greenwood 9d, 3m, 5t, 0g.
Murphy 17d, 3m, 3t, 1g
Mackay 19d, 3m, 0t, 0g.

OK so thats just a few that the numbers suggest (and I know the numbers dont necessarily do justice to how a player truly performed) didnt have as good a game as Gibbs. So there has to be something else happening. I dont think its an attutude problem (like I dont give a s**t) but others have suggested that he is not playing to the plan. Anyway something is happening there. As for Gibbs being a good player, well we all have our opinions and mine is Gibbs is still in our best 22.

This plus a 5 year JJ deal isn't looking fantastic right now :(

I think the club was under pressure to demonstrate what a wonderful club we are. There has been so much negativity surrounding the club and its been going on for years. Holding onto Jenkins, who was playing good footy back then, was telling the footy world that we are a good club and we can hold onto our players.

Well having that type of blind attitude will only lead us down the path of regret like many on here at the moment have expressed. Two years ago we all had a smile on our dial and we were full of pride because one of the key forwards of the comp wanted to stay in Adelaide. Today we are regretful.

Jenkins looked very cheap into his first 2 years of that 5 year contract, a forward who could kick 40+ goals and go into the ruck for $550K per year (I think he can get back to that form) and I still maintain Gibbs is easily worth pick 10 in a weak draft (if you look at the trade more closely).

Gibbs playing decent footy is worth that, yes. Gibbs playing SANFL isn't.

Gibbs was in the best last week wasn't he?

Seems weird
No where to be seen when the game was up for grabs in the second half. Had a good little patch in the first half when he kicked a couple of goals then missed an easy one. He needs to get more involved and force his way into the game. his attitude seems poor, and it needs to change.

...So there has to be something else happening...

Defensive running apparently.

Fox Sports News’ AFL correspondent Julian de Stoop said a lack of defensive pressure and defensive running had contributed to Gibbs’ omission.

“Since the teams came out I’ve spoken to a couple of people at Adelaide and they’re adamant it was why he was dropped the first time, it’s defensive pressure, it’s lack of defensive running,” de Stoop said.

“And if you look at some of the kids that are in the Crows side right now, a (Chayce) Jones, a (Ned) McHenry — that’s what they bring to the side and Gibbs doesn’t.

“So he’s (Don Pyke’s) been tough on him this year and he’s (Gibbs has) probably gotten away with it in the past but it’s not going to happen under Don Pyke.”

There was also a 50/50 chance that we would lose BOTH Sloane and Lynch to Victorian deals.
Sliding doors, imagine if we lost both of them, and Brad Crouch was = Joe Daniher injury prone.
Gibbs was midfield insurance for that possibility, and we certainly needed him last year with Sloane and both Crouches out at various times.

The club could not necessarily have forecast future attitude problems for someone who was generally viewed to have had high standards and consistency during his time at Carlton. Most thought Tom Rockliff at Port had fallen off a cliff last year, but he has had multiple 40+ possession games this year. We will have to see if Gibbs wants to do the work to get back on track.

I would expect a CEO to be smart enough to put the long term competitiveness of our club over a short term PR win.
