I have a biased view on this.

How is the AFL responsible for this?
They are part of the problem. It’s shocking. When you tip, the odds are listed. Shows on AFL website are presented by gambling. Bad look. It’s in every paper, website, tv show and telecast. Including the AFL ladder!

I can't believe, if he has had an issue with a gambling addiction and is facing life damaging losses, that we wouldn't be supporting him.

If we are, it doesn't look like it.

They are not betting on the AFL for starters its against the rules. Gambling is not an illegal activity. I personally dont have a problem with it.

With that said, yes it can be excessive, but to attribute that to a player losing a $1m there are deeper issues here.

Exactly. What next. Ban beer adverts because some people can't handle their grog.

I totally agree there are deeper issues here, no arguments. I hope that if the rumours are true he has the help around him he needs.

For me what they are betting on is irrelevant. Smoking is also legal, we know the damage that causes. For many gambling is equally addictive and devastating.

Footballers with gambling addiction is nothing new and sadly these will not be the last. I find it distasteful that an organisation which likes to pat themselves on the back regarding player welfare will take significant money and promote these organisations.

In my opinion the AFL are helping create the next generation of problem gamblers, you cant watch/listen to the footy without several mentions of the betting odds/multi's/bets of the week etc. When you have 5 yr footy obsessed kids asking what the odds mean we have a problem.

It's not just the AFL that are guilty of this.

True. But they're letting it play out as public humiliation.
If the rumors are infact true, the. What if Bryce doesn’t want to make it public? In that case, AFC can’t really do much other than gift him games which would not be fair on the rest of the team.

Something is obviously very off with the whole situation.

There is a gambling epidemic amongst footballers, 2 lost or owe $1M, one from VIC and one from SA, so the Beames Gibbs rumours sound legit.

Up to 120 players have gambling issues.
The article doesn’t say SA but says an interstate club. Could be any club but rumors are obviously pointing to us.

What is the AFL & AFLPA doing?

Surely they should take the lead as this is a massive problem through society for those who can't control themselves & destroy their lives & those around them.

The Melbourne media keep the rumours going.

SEN chief broadcaster Gerard Whateley simply believes the Crows are keeping the full story close to their chest about why Gibbs is coming in and out of the side.

“The only conclusion to this is that we’re not being told the whole story and that one day we might learn it, but we’re not learning it at the moment,” Whateley said.

Huddo: "Do you think Bryce Gibbs will be at the Crows next year?"

Gerard: "If we had a mid-season trade period, he wouldn't be there next week"

**** GW pisses me off. He is as tabloid as they come but always gets presented as this respectable journalist.

Lets assume for 1 second the gambling rumour is true.

How does it actually help him by dropping him, then trhe next week bring him back and up and down like a yo-yo?

What purpose does that do? Its not like the debt will go away.

And if the gambling debt is true, why didn’t it influence his form last year?

It's not illegal so who cares.
Never made me want a cigarette when we had them.
If someone can't have self control. The majority shouldn't suffer
So you dont give a shit about the vulnerable.

Nice...

Let's say 40 players on a list. That makes approx 720 players, so approximatley 15% of players have gambling issues. Significant.
