I totally agree there are deeper issues here, no arguments. I hope that if the rumours are true he has the help around him he needs.
For me what they are betting on is irrelevant. Smoking is also legal, we know the damage that causes. For many gambling is equally addictive and devastating.
Footballers with gambling addiction is nothing new and sadly these will not be the last. I find it distasteful that an organisation which likes to pat themselves on the back regarding player welfare will take significant money and promote these organisations.
In my opinion the AFL are helping create the next generation of problem gamblers, you cant watch/listen to the footy without several mentions of the betting odds/multi's/bets of the week etc. When you have 5 yr footy obsessed kids asking what the odds mean we have a problem.
It's not just the AFL that are guilty of this.
Actually what the person is gambling on is actually the most relevant issue, because thats how counseling and therapy can help.
If he is betting on sports, he needs to learn how to watch sports, without the need to bet on outcomes. Much like how an alcoholic in recovery needs to learn how to be around others that drink.
This problem is not unique to the AFL. In Europe it is much much worse in terms of amount that is wagered by players, there are players that are betting like $100,000 per bet. Mind you these players are earning like a million a week.
The ingredients that cause these issues are the same, plenty of money, plenty of spare time and plenty of excitement from the rush.
