Roast Bryce Gibbs

Bryce will be back, he is a high quality footballer. What I don't like is Pyke's commentary on his none selection due to "defensive efforts". Matt Crouch, Atkins, CEY are mids that deliver very limited defensive efforts.

In particular, Atkins who applies zero defensive pressure. For this season Bryce averages 4 tackles to Atkins 1.5.

Pyke needs to stop claiming this, its false and gets exposed

I don't think Rockliff was for us.
Charlie was always going.
Tim Kelly looks like an easy target in hindsight.

I reckon we paid about the right value ... but the mistake was more in what we dished up in 2018 than the Gibbs trade. He played really well last year, and we wasted the year with the CM and hamstring debacles.

Anyone who has a problem with us not playing Gibbs because his past performances have been good - or he could potentially re-ignite his form - I think is in the wrong. That's a "golden ticket" scenario that we all hate. His form is down, he isn't an easy fit into the team at the moment. I'd prefer that he try and find his form in the SANFL and demand to be picked for the best 22.

We definitely overpaid for Gibbs, however we had just lost a grand final and Gibbs was an A grade midfielder at that time, and that was our weakness, so it makes sense to overpay.

Unfortunately. We overrated our position relative to the league and have not seen reward for that signing. Ah well.

If Gibbs has a gambling issue and Carlton kept that from us, I wouldn't be surprised given what happened with Chris Yarran after they traded him to Richmond.
Given Justin Reid and as Gibbs manager I'd of hoped he knew. SOS was taking it as a personal issue with Reid over SOS feeling we targeted a player when we knew his contract was back ended and he'd already made most of the money from it.

Unfortunately we completely stuffed the offseason and blew all our hamstrings.

I don't think we overrated anything at the end of 2017.

Hopefully, the rumours are not true. If there is some truth to it hopefully Gibbs gets the help he requires.

You can dig up historic posts about Gibb's potentially having gambling issues in the past however if you wanted to go through and read all the 'rumours' people post on here (not to mention on facebook pages) which never eventuate I am sure you will find that half the current players have either a drug problem, a gambling problem, a cheating partner, is cheating on their partner or some other major issue.

Either way - hopefully, if this is true Bryce has a club and family support network to get him through.

It’s a narrower field than that. Essentially it’s a choice between Brad Crouch and Gibbs as the hybrid inside/outside midfielder and the coaches believe they’re getting more both ways from Crouch than Gibbs.

This came from one of the coaches.

What it doesn’t answer is why Gibbs isn’t being looked at as an outside only option.

We did consider that initially this season with moving him to the half back line. Results weren't pretty which was odd as he's actually a good half back.

Still believe it was a move worth making, however it was a year late. Coming off a grand final loss, he should have given us an extra boost however the whole team has crumbled since 2017, he's a better player then some in the 22 but that's just the way it's going.

I think it's time to again remind everyone we did NOT trade two 1st round picks for Gibbs. We traded one first round pick, plus swapped our 1st for Carlton's 2nd, so more or less just a minor downgrade of picks.
Totally agree, it's only because Carlton were so crap and finish last and there were only 2 FA compensation that affect this pick, we took the risk that this would occur and it worked in our favour. I would prefer pick 21 in a strong draft, then pick 16 in a weak draft any-day of the week. Can't Carlton supporters do the maths.... Dadda Dave?

An average player who looked good in a crap team, never wanted him and I stand by that
He was very good for us in the 1st half of last year when M.Crouch, B.Crouch and Sloane were all out due to long term injuries but since then he has gone backward big time and it isn't because his body is cooked, it's all in his head which could be even worst then physical.

Except didn't we give Carlton back a 2nd as well?

There are a few of us who have been seeing this reality from day 1 and I think others are slowly coming to realize it, including the coaches.
I was ecstatic when the first deal fell over. But I'm the type of guy that wanted to trade Dangerfield to Melbourne the year before he left so what do I know.

After the FA compensation that pick was 28 but we also got Carlton's 3rd rounder which was pick 40 so both these picks are virtually neither here or there. So essentially Gibbs was only trade for pick 10 in a weak draft who they drafted LoB and he isn't further developed as they like (could be another one of SOS draft bust there).

Danger would have refused that trade.
I know and that's everything that's wrong with the current free agency. Players want all the juicy bits from America but not the sting in the tail.

So.. 2 1sts, 1 2nd for gibbs, 1 2nd and 1 3rd

sounds an awful lot like 2 first rounders to me.
Technically yes, but logically it isn't if you view pick 21 in a strong draft as the same (if not better) then pick 16 (would have been pick 17 if not for the GWS draft sanction) in a weak draft.
That's why we did the trade as we had a very low 1st rounder in a weak draft and took the gamble that Carlton will finish bottom 2 in a strong draft (preferably last which they did), and we did get lucky as there were only 2 FA compensation pick that affected it in Lynch and Lycett.
I've had this debate already with you guys here and over there with the Carlton guys and you and them still don't get it.
