We did give a little too much yeah, but again given what we saw in 05/06, an 80% Carey would have been enough

Not having a shot at you here because this was a long time ago, but if you think a 34 or 35 year old Carey in 05/06 would have been enough at even 80% you would be wrong.

He was cooked when he began playing for us at age 32. Sure he did play some good games for us in that first year, but he wasnt worth it at the time nor in hindsight.

His games in early 04 before the knee were very solid. I would have backed that in over what we had, especially given the injury to Hentschel. We didnt need much more to win a flag in those years, the mere fact of him being there would have been enough.

Pav was the better move in hindsight of course, but it was line ball at the time.

Gibbs form at the moment I liken it to Sloane when he was given the hard tag back in 2017. Sloane was getting low possession counts and everyone could see he wasn’t handling it very well.

Now I don’t think Gibbs is being tagged, but something is making his form dip to the point any fan can see. The key word here is “form dip”, as last year he was performing admirably when most midfielders were crumbling around him (Sloane, Crouch bros). Gibbs was a very good player for us last year.

2 general reasons:
- off-field dramas (in which case he should be getting some time off to set his mind straight)
- on-field dramas.

Things I think could be affecting him on-field:
- his role/position is not suiting him
- feeling extra heat from players in the reserves, where this has not been a major issue in the past at Carlton with their poor depth and us last year with our high injury count
- other?
Gibbs is not fit to wash Sloane’s car.

Gibbs performance last night had more in common with the farewell games of Menzel sand Hampton than anything Sloane has ever put forward.

His limp efforts had me yelling at the screen. Enjoy your retirement in the Snaffle, Bryce.

I remember Carey doing ok, but he got more cooked with some extra injuries along the way at the Crows.

I don’t think it’s fair to compare the trade for Carey and Pavlich as a 50/50 decision. Pavlich was in the prime of his career and likely would have demanded a big contract. Carey was going downhill and not in as much demand (form and off-field dramas), so I don’t expect the contract would be as big as Pavlich’s.

Maybe. Though the key thing is that Gibbs is still getting 30 possessions in the SANFL. Menzel and Hampton never gave anything of that magnitude in the SANFL...ever!

The only place Carey wasn't going downhill was in the spa at the Stamford Grand.

We would have won a flag in one of those years even without Carey, if we had Riccuito not getting suspended and or McLeod not getting injured along with Birdman. In 06 it was the Parvovirus that killed us.

It was the holes in our midfield at the time that cost us a GF berth. Not the lack of a forward.

Given his distractions, it's not surprising that he is not switched on & that many are saying he is disinterested, soft, etc. In professional sport where you are not 100% switched on, you are going to perform poorly.

It's time to stop the yoyoing between the afl & sanfl & give him a long stint in th sanfl until the outside distractions are rectified. Playing him in the afl is not doing us or him any good. Someone like Polholke would have been more deserving of a game last night.

Did you follow up with a Mackay question?
I wish. To give Trigg credit he used to respond to my emails when quite frankly I wouldn’t have. The one that led to this phone call was a pretty bad email I sent pissed after a Freo loss where he said we should be happy with our plight pregame.

I later apologised which led to the phone call.

Never wanted him. He had plenty of poor games at Carlton aswell. Even booed by his own supporters.

He lets the whole structures down with his lack of effort. Cannot play again.
Reid has traded in some shockers the last few years.

Reid doesn’t choose the player, he does the deal. I remember reading a Carlton poster on the main board a few years ago say that Gibbs was the only player he knew that could hit the field with a raw egg in each pocket and they’d still be intact come the final siren.

Exactly if he's not switched on why keep playing him. I reckon if we suspended his match payments he would get switched on pretty quick.

We gave up way too much. He was leaving North, they weren’t in a position to demand such high currency.

Who was doing the negotiations back then? We paid far too much given his age, year out of footy and the fact that there was no option for North to retain him.
