Roast Bryce Gibbs

Mentally, he's cooked. He's just not there. Physically......who knows, cos we never see him imply himself into a contest. There is an obvious issue there between him and Don. No way he keeps his spot this week.

Very sticky situation.
Mentally, he’s “not with it” rather than “cooked”. He’s still getting 25-30 disposals both at SANFL and AFL level on a lot of the games this year.

The stats above show he’s still willing to chase after the ball and doing dirty ground work. The main issue this year is that he’s:
- not distributing the ball well enough
- not chasing the opponents hard enough

Don has the right to have an obvious issue with Gibbs, but his several AFL re-selections show Pyke still thinks Gibbs is in the best 22, providing if playing in form. Unfortunately, his form is currently not consistent enough.

I think we can agree to disagree. I read somewhere that Kelly was his man on Friday night. If this is so, then he is more than "not with it". Kelly smashed us.
SANFL is a totally different level. Getting 30 possessions in that grade should be a piece of p155 for him.

Gibbs couldn't have been on Kelly - Gibbs was barely on the ground. He spent more time on the bench than any otehr player.

are you suggesting all mentally cooked players find it easy as p155 to get 30 possessions in the SANFL?

Totally agree, someone who understands football. You can’t have all inside players that just bang the ball on their boot which is our Achilles heel. Geelong runs the ball from a pack with so much flow and system and they run in waves as they have link up players all over the ground. David Mackay is one of the few we have but you need five or six that can do this as Mackay often has no one to link with. I’ve been commenting about this for a while now. Not everyone can be inside and trading Henderson was stupid. The majority just want 18 Crouches on here. Football doesn’t work like that

Exactly. Our game plan is around hard ball gets. We don’t have enough contested marking ability to be across athe entire ground every single time we just kick it forward. Our contested marking is pretty okay, but it is not that good. but then suddenly our inside mids arewhere the ball was, not where the ball is. So the moment it goes to ground it becomes a 50/50 contest unless we hold it up long enough for a ball up. We miss Lynch as that link up player. Walker used to come down the ground more a few years ago but I think they want to try and get him to contest the mark so he stays forward. He has such a good field kick so him pressing down the ground is much better for us. It allows us to straighten up and position for that forward entry.
I guess when JJ is back he can play the contested forward which frees up Walker or bring in Fog. To be the contested beast, not sure what his defensive pressure is like.
Without hi jacking this thread but when Seedsman or Smith go forward they have to score or we risk them being out of position on the counter attack. Against Geelong there were too many uncontested marks in their forward area because either players were out of position or were not working hard enough to man up in their opponent. You expect a Hawkins to out mark Talia from time to time but players or space not being defended is inexcusable. Goes to show that although we are on the right track we still have more work to do before finals.

You are delusional.
Pick 10 and a third rounder?
You have drank the cool aid.
Pick 10 in 2017 + early 3rd rounder according to the points but if you take into account the strength of the 2018 draft compared to 2017 so you would prefer pick 21 in 2018 compared to pick 16 in 2017, it's likely close to a mid 3rd rounder.

Points. How many times do people need to be told that points mean nothing outside of FS/Academy bidding.
We handed over two first round and one second round picks for a second rounder and a third.
Please, stop trying to reinvent history.

Its gotta be so frustrating. He is so valuable when he is on and playing well - but I truly don't know what they can do.

You cant go on SANFL form - he is so damn talented that he will perform even if he gives 30% effort.

He must be looking sharp on the training track as well - or else I doubt they would select him.

From the outside perspective it seems as though he is fit, healthy, sharp on the track and then when he gets to AFL level just sh!ts the bed.

I guess my thinking would be to give him 5 weeks out and then get him in for the West Coast, Collingwood and possibly Bulldog games - assess the form of him for finals.

We are a much better side if we can go into the finals with a 2018 version of Gibbs. Would be a massive boost for the finals.

What do you mean no one saw his decline come? Read mine and others posts at the time. He was going to be 30, 31 and 32 years of age on the last three years of his contract. The tail end of it. Very few players keep at their peak into their 30s. Where as we gave up two possible 10 year first rounders for him. Was always a stupid trade, we were bent over and made to look stupid, especially after saying the year before he wasn't worth two firsts and it would be irresponsible to do that trade. Well that was about the ONLY thing the club got right about it. It was irresponsible and someone needs to pay the price for it.

No you weren't bent over. Justin Reid willingly spread his cheeks and forwarded Carlton an invitation by trying to standover the blues and forgetting Gibbs was contracted. After rejecting Justin's juicy invitation in 2016 we accepted in 2017. Blame yourselves, your recruiting department and your delusional belief that a premiership was inevitable

Lol - you discount points, then try to make out all firsts and seconds are the same!!

You should like a Carlton supporter, trying to make out the pick swap this year is a win for them.

We swapped pick ten for Gibbs, plus a number of pick upgrades. The main one - pick 16 for 19 - seems like a win for us, if anything.

Lol - you're the most unprofessional and disappointing team of the last 20 years. You barely belong in the majors, and haven't since when you were able to cheat the salary cap to get players.

Hope the pick 2 for pick 13 and 19 trade is going well for you, you sad flog.

We gave up pick ten, wanting Bryce to have at least a few years in a decent program before he's done. Sadly, seems the Carlton disease isn't curable when treated this late.

No, we gave up pick 10 and 16, upgraded our second rounder with theirs and got a third rounder back. So did we get two firsts for Lever or only one?

The club needs to have a serious chat with him and what his origin of the form dip. If it’s due to an overload of stress then definitely should be given time off. If he actually prefers to play then go back to SANFL until issues are sorted.

I think the club seems unsure what to do, but doing this yo-yo-ing selection with Gibbs seems to be making him more confused rather than helping him out!

I'm almost happy to just let Bryce toil this season out in the Magoo's now. His yoyo act is not benefiting himself or the team. I mean, if he were to get BOG 4-5 times in a row then sure bring him back into the side. But anything short of that, then he's played himself out of the current best 22 IMO.

Come back next season strong and fit, and with your head in the game.

Yes, because we never swapped 2nd rounders with Melbourne where we finished last and they finish middle, and also gave them our 3rd rounder.
