Past Bryce Gibbs

now we're re-writing Carlton history again and overlooking the state of our team at the time Gibbs arrived - he was played back to help shore up a frail backline - not just for his schooling. Even the old "he was playing against men as a 16 year old" gets another run. Don't forget the 6 goals in a match goodie!

Absolute rubbish.

You play your best players in their best positions. He would have been much more valuable in the middle and forward of centre. You get other blokes to cover the half back flank. One thing our list over the last 15 years has never had a shortage of is half back flankers!

Propping up a frail backline is the worst excuse of all time for wasting a young midfield talent. It is the exact mindset that stuffed us up in the past.

Coach, mind-reader, clairvoyant, player development specialist - geez we're blessed to have you among us.

Cannot handle people comparing him to Watts. Gibba had a down year last year (almost entirely ruined by injury) after showing plenty in the years before that. While his current form should be praised, it's important not to do so by diminishing some of the good years he has given to the club.

Since our backline was so depleted would you have played Murphy on a half back flank as well? Sounds like we needed it.

Gibbs has 12-15 Brownlow votes 10 rounds in.

I hope so.

I backed him recently at $251.

Won't win it, but as they say 'I like those odds'...

ItsAllAboutMe - now paying $26 - $67 (sportsbet), depending on the bookie...

Sorry to bring up betting on the main board, but his odds 'shortening' in the last week shows the public has just woken up to how good his season has been.

Gibbs has had a great season so far and deserves praise, but I don't know why that means we have to pretend that he's always been this gun that we've seen consistently for the past 7 or 8 weeks.
He has been in the top handful of Carlton players for a number of years now. Has always been A-Grade IMO.

Now that he's taken his game to the next level... he's being talked about as one of the top handful midfielders... in the entire league.

Plugging holes down back with your number one draft pick for so long seems odd to me. It's usually only in their debut year that players like Gibbs stay back before moving into the midfield.

Keeping Gibbs down back certainly didn't help out Judd out too much in the long run as well.

Don't know why some pretend he's been a bust until now either. Was regularly doing great jobs off a HBF earlier in his career and a few tagging jobs in the middle with a good season as a mid early doors too. Stepped it up a couple seasons ago winning the B&F and making the AA 40-man squad before having an injury-affected season last year - first time in his entire career he's been out of the top 10 in the club B&F. Not always been the AA level gun he's been recently, but he's been a decent player who's more often been top 5 at the club than not; just checked, only thrice been out of Carlton's top 5 in 9 seasons.

Averages per game: 27.5 disposals, 4.6 marks, 1.1 goals, 5.4 tackles, 3.5 I50 & 2.0 R50.

Currently equal second in Herald Sun Player of the Year on 12 votes (Dangerfield leading on 13 votes).

Current TAB odds: $101 to win/$26 for a place.

Unlikely he'll win, but I think there's great value at those odds and worth $10 each way.

He has always been a jet.

Trouble was he was never challenged by his coaches early in his career. They let him play on a half back flank, a position which never challenged his real talent. He played well there and did the team thing and never once complained about not getting enough time in the midfield.

If he had an extra 100 games in the midfield and forward of centre early in his career, what we are seeing today, we would have been seeing it 4 or 5 years ago.

Gibbs is a classic example of how not to develop an elite talent.

Gibbs always has been a team player. He does what the coaches asked of him. This year bb has challenged him to take himself off the leash and go for it . Bryce does what he is told.

Keep wining and his chances go up

He rarely gets injured

Murphy isn't dominating and Cripps is still young (mostly gets handballs) so Bryce could steal most Carlton votes

I think BG sees what BB is doing and he is really investing himself in the club now, more than ever as exemplified by chucking his guts up after the game - he's pushing himself

He hasn't been a bust and no one is saying that he is, but he is playing out of his skin at the moment and seems to have found another gear. Some people are (rightfully, in my opinion) questioning why he hasn't ALWAYS played to this level.

Don't think it was his best game ever and a couple against Geelong may have been better, but this one has a 'Win' next to it....so maybe.

Gibbs hunted the ball as hard as I've seen him and that alone, will ensure he gets the 10 coaches votes this week.

I think it was his best game in terms of extracting every bit out of himself and going 100% at the contest.

Not only that, he seemed to really step up as a leader with our captain getting injured. It was just a complete game from Gibba in every way.

People so quick to forget... Bryce has had a number of good years now such as '09 '10 '11 '14... Him going to this level is the natural next step after '14 that I suspect he would have taken if not for injury in '15. Think I called it in the pre-season that he would be the man this year.
