Didn't call him soft, but he is no Hodge and shouldn't be compared with him.
Deflection.

You stated that Gibbs wouldn't sit under a high ball or back into a pack to mark.

Forest, meet trees.

Love that it's Grigg who kicked it to Gibbs. :p

Am I right in saying he was close to signing a new contract a few weeks ago? Unless I missed this and he has, it seems to have gone a little quiet.

Can't argue with video evidence but to my defence, one was against richmond and doesn't count ;)

If you want to compare Hodge, I reckon simpson and scotland are similar players.

He shouldn't be compared with Scotland or Simpson either as they play different roles, couldn't imagine those 2 matching up on a Goodes type and beating him convincingly:confused:

Shouldn't be compared with Hodge either as Hodge doesn't have his skill and poise.

See you can turn any argument around to suit your point of view!!!;)

Hey man I'm married. If i can't turn around arguments to suit my agenda i'll be stuffed! :)

Anyway you just re-iterated my point, gibbs is no hodge nor a scotland or a simpson, all of which possess stupid amounts of courage. I accept it though. As Harker pointed out, not everyone needs to posses those traits and he brings other positives to the side. Some of which are poise as you mentioned, skills and good decision making. I get it ;)

Life sentence:p Poor bastard, get a good lawyer, good luck:thumbsu:

He is sacrificed to play one of the most important roles in our team that others cant. I reckon he is worth keeping;):thumbsu:

Thanks everyone for your opinions.I think I will remain very hopeful he reaches the high expectations that myself and probably others have put on him.
I hope at the end of the year I can start a thread saying AA GIBBS IS A GUN!!!

Shades of Deledio at this early stage of his career. (and thats no insult)

Needs to exert a touch more authority.

Will come in time.

Seems some people are reading to many threads in Bay 13 and listening to the nuffies on here.

Gibbs will be fine and is of massive importance to us. I have no problem with his form to date and we are a much better team with him in the side and last years final in Perth is damming and had he played i would be confident in saying we would have won that game.

People just expect to much when a player is taken at No.1 and want BOG's every week and he was a Top 10 place getter in the 2009 Brownlow.

In 2010 he was switched down back as our rebounding defender and he suits this role well and we need him here and he got 45 disposals in Rd 10 performing this role.

I hope at the end of the year I can start a thread saying AA GIBBS IS A GUN!!!
Gibbs does not need an AA so called badge of honour to make me call him a gun. All it is, is something to hang ones hat on in a verbal stoush when comparing players etc. There have been a few gun players that have never been an AA and do not read to much into this stat and while it very well may come soon do not let it cloud your judgement on Bryce.

I'm disgusted with some of the opinion in this thread especially when calling Gibbs' courage to attack the ball....

He is by far, our most complete footballer, balance, poise, strength, hands, kicking, overhead marking and by far the most important thing in football today, decision making...

He plays down back because no one else in our team has his decision making, simple...

He plays in defense and stands out as the leader and we all feel good when he's there, he goes forward against Essendon in the final last year and leads and we all feel good, the common thread, HE LEADS...

Some people are born with a presence to be a leader, a captain...:thumbsu:

I only disagree with 1 part of that entire post. Leadership. I dont feel any kind of inspiration when Bryce plays like most do with their captains, Simmo is inspirational and leads by example, Murph leads by example and Juddy is both. Gibbs in my opinion is a bit of a drifter, im often surprised to see that he has 20+ stats. Whether my expectations have been raised too high because of no.1 status or not i dont know... but im waiting for him to bust a game open and really put his stamp on it.

But not captain material for mine. I prefer the type of captain that you would land on Gallipoli alongside of, the guy that makes you feel confident just having him on the field. Brown, Kirk and Judd are epitomy of this type. After Judd i have Simmo for us. Even Kreuzer, he leads by example but is probably a bit too quiet.

Done his job as he always does.

Rolls Royce down back, setting up play with his precision skills, and has been called on to play talls & smalls.

At times, like he always does, has played CHB, and gone forward to set up forward thrusts.

Been very good, as he always is.

Those defending Gibbs to the hilt are incredibly grating. I love the man - probably my favourite player and for that reasons adorns my membership card.

Yet any time anybody tries to bring up anything that could be construed as even remotely negative about any player who isn't one of the designated whipping boys we have posters overreact and attack the man. I'd hate to see how some of you deal with constructive criticism in your real lives.

Nobody in this thread has claimed that Gibbs is a horrible footballer. Nobody has claimed he's an average footballer. Hell, I'm not sure anybody's claimed he's merely 'good'. Most everybody agrees he's very good. Some of think he could be so much more.

Personally, I think his games fluctuate between good and brilliant, hovering somewhere about very good. He very rarely is ineffectual but he's not top 3 on the ground as often as somebody as his talent should be. I'm not sure the reason but when you see how good he can perform some weeks, it is disappointing that he's content to be very good other weeks.

Players like Judd, Simpson, Scotland and Murphy on the oher hand, perform closer to their peak more regularly (even if that peak mightn't necessarily be a high as Gibbs). Murphy in particular has probably been in our top 5 players in 25 of our last 30 games, despite the work the opposition put into him.

For coach and captain to come out at the start of the season and claim that Gibbs was the player to watch and would elevate himself to Murphy/Judd levels, his start to the season has been a touch disappointing.

A player who at present seems content to be very good, for whatever reason unwilling or unable to take that next step to genuinely elite. And I refuse to believe that the most complete footballer on our list doesn't have the ability to produce more than he currently is, so unable it isn't.

And a big one at that.

Just because Gibbs doesn't play a hard game doesn't mean he's soft.
Gibbs is not our enforcer. He is our play-maker. I wish people could see that.
You're missing the point. Nobody is saying he has to be the enforcer. That's just silly.

While he is a playmaker, and that is fine, he doesn't look like he will be the midfielder we initially thought he would be, simply because he is not a hard player.

I think we all need to accept he won't be a mid, and be content he is a great HBF/playmaker type. Might even end up a great HFF one day.

I agree with B4F. Gibbs has the potential to be a lot better than he is currently.

For mine though his issue are manifold:

a) Asked to play multiple roles. Means he lacks consistency in a role, and therefore occassionally has less influential times as he is not gelled with teammates in same area of ground.

b) Puts too much pressure on himself. Evident in goal-kicking performances and clearance work which is more often bomb it long then look for teammate. Needs to relax a little, I suspect it is the weight of expectation.

c) Waits a little too much on the ball/play. Often it comes off, sometimes it doesn't. Should be more attacking at times, instead of relying on his reading.

d) Needs a task. Honestly I think what he needs is a clearly defined role, like tagging Goodes, or playing third man up. When he gets them, he does them to perfection, when he is given more reign he seems a little lost. If you send him forward, tell him his job is lead high up etc. If its in the middle, tell him to wait on the defensive side, etc.

Very happy with the player we have. Was he worth a number 1 pick?
I don't really care, he is doing his job and is an integral part of our starting 22.

I've made my views pretty clear in terms of where I'd most like to see him play; ie HFF and into the middle and my opinion is that if it happens we will see his best footy but it may never happen with any regularity.

Here's a thought, perhaps the thing that drives Gibbs to play footy is not quite the same thing that drives Judd or Murphy or Ablett.

We get too hung up on draft position vs our expectation of what the player should produce over the course of their career.

All this Gibbs-bashing is tiresome. I might start a new thread entitled

¿ How come Judd never picks up a man ? ;)

It's grating that you choose to focus on Gibbs' negatives more than the next player. People react the same way if you point out that Murphy isn't a pure in and under player like Judd and Selwood who have the body, intent and size for this position. Each player has their own style and game that is far from perfect. You seem fixated on Gibbs more than Simpson's inability to kick for goal after ten years.

Sorry, that's just your perception of Gibbs and Scotland based on the past. Scotland's 2012 got off to a slower start than Gibbs before he played well against Freo.

Why does a player need to be a nutter like Robinson to be a midfielder?

Pendlebury isn't a mad dog, but he has a midfield position nailed down.

Hard to make a call on Gibbs as a midfielder if the coaches use him at half back to lead the backline without our best 22. I guess Walker didn't have it in him to be a forward because he was played as a defender and tagger.
