It's grating that you choose to focus on Gibbs' negatives more than the next player. People react the same way if you point out that Murphy isn't a pure in and under player like Judd and Selwood who have the body, intent and size for this position. Each player has their own style and game that is far from perfect. You seem fixated on Gibbs more than Simpson's inability to kick for goal after ten years.
When have I ever focused on his negatives? If you look back, you'll realised I've been very vocal in my support for Gibbs.

We were promised more this preseason and he's yet to deliver. Still playing very good footy but it's not the AA, Murphy/Judd level footy that both Ratts and Judd predicted.

If it does appear I focus more on his negatives it's because of the high expectations I have of him. I'm not particularly concerned if Joseph puts in an average game or Bower gets 5 kicked on him because truth be told they are limited in some respects.

What are Gibbs' limitations? What's stopping him from taking the competition by the throat? You tell me, because I look at him and see a guy who should be a top 20 footballer in the competition. And that perception isn't based on the number he was picked but what he's shown in patches over his career. Clearly coach and captain agree.

Yet it is Ratten that is largely holding back Gibbs' progress to midfield.

I'm confident that Gibbs will be freed up soon enough though.
Laidler going down didn't do Gibbs any favours and it's just a matter of time before Gibbs finally gets released and no one will be happier for that to happen than Gibbs, himself.

I agree with Blues4flag I am not trying to say he is no good because he is a very very good footballer but I am very keen to see him reach his absolute potential.

Harks I agree also that with Laidler & Yarran out we wont see him push up into the midfield but imo this is where he should play.:thumbsu:

Everything was pointing to Gibbs mixing it through the centre and spending time forward as was the case for the last 7 games played last year.
Our hand has been forced to some degree and that has not come about, clearly disappointing Gibbs and the many of us who see his best value elsewhere.

Just taking Laidler out of the equation, Duigan, Tuohy and Russell haven't quite hit their best down back either.
When the coaches have suitable faith returned, we'll again see Gibbs moving up the ground. Won't be long, all being well.

It's interesting 'cause he's definitely played in the guts enough to get a handle on his style/ability. He doesn't have the hardness or urgency of the competitions best mids, but in space his disposal is excellent and his brain works fast in traffic.
Obviously with MORE time, his development will continue and maybe the harder, more intense edge will come.

He's played a bit through there but often with little continuity. When he has spent extended time in the middle/up the ground (late 09/late 11) he's been brilliant.

After a quick scan of this thread I have a question, for anyone who knows but probably for Harks; how would you rank Gibba's running ability? Is it as lethal as the rest of his arsenal? I'm talking on the training track, obviously it's not holding him back in games.

Obviously there's Tex/Ed, then there's Warnock (I'd imagine) at the other end of the scale. Where in between is Bryce? Does he not bust his arse hard enough on the track to demand a midfield spot? From what I can tell from games he's not a 'gut-buster', but this could simply be a symptom of his ability to make everything look easy. He certainly moves pretty bloody smoothly.

Anyways, would be interested in some opinions.

Gibbs has been totally outstanding thus far, and there's heaps more upside left. Brilliant reader of the game, outstanding skills. Couldn't want anything more from a high draft pick actually. His height make's him extremely versatile - so we can use him up on the HFF or as a play maker across HB or in the middle as needed.
