Sounds like he had the surgery already. Looking forward to him having a huge 2014.

Check out how swollen his knee is.

I saw the poor bugger coming out of the Gabba about 1:30 this Arvo,he looked quite down and out understandable in the circumstances I guess. Even I as a Cat supporter couldn't help but feel for him.
I wish him a speedy recovery.

According to Nathan Clarke, Retzy has been helping out Stakes as an assistant coach.

With the ever-changing nature of the Reserves side, Clarke lauded the efforts of his hard-working assistant coaches who have helped provide stability to the team’s structure this season.

“The Reserves coaching staff have been tremendous all year and probably don’t get the plaudits they really deserve,” Clarke said.

“Brent Staker has been a great addition as our forward-line coach, and Bryce Retzlaff has recently joined him since his injury. They’re both so enthusiastic and it really rubs off on the players.”

It's hard to see him having a huge amount of input, but this is a truly great way to help him to continue to develop while he recovers and completes his rehab.

Seems to have really immersed himself in his assistant coaching role with the reserves. Great team man.

Gotta say though, I was shuddering watching him climb the ladder into the reserves coaches box with that knee brace on yesterday.

On crutches last night.

Chatted about that with him last night actually. I said "talk me through the decision to climb up into the box" & "in hindsight wag out a smart decision?"

I said it jokingly and he chuckled as well but he said it was pretty straight forward & not difficult to get up & down.

When I wrote last year's Bryce Retzlaff review, I pointed to his seemingly limitless desire, dedication and work ethic, stating that if there was an AFL standard footballer within him, those virtues would ensure he unleashed it. I probably should have added "and a little luck..." but more on that later.

"Retzy" started the season in the reserves much like he finished the last one. An absolute workhorse at centre-half forward but still raw and rough as they come. Ran all day and night, but not always to the right places, meaning that the return on energy invested was not quite where it should be - a problem further punctuated by those trademark Retzy yips in front of goal.

As the season progressed, the NEAFL premiership bound Lions Reserves found their groove as a football unit and skipper Bryce benefitted from more predictable ball movement through the middle and plenty of well-delivered inside 50s. At the same time, his confidence seemed to really build and his contested marking improved considerably, as did his set shot kicking.

After back to back bags of 7 goals vs both the GWS Reserves and Broadbeach, a long-awaited return to the seniors seemed inevitable for Bryce, a berth that the reserves watching faithful (who had long since elevated Retzlaff to cult-hero status) considered long overdue.

The football gods can be brutally cruel and capricious. Two minutes into the Lions Reserves round 10 clash with the Gold Coast Reserves, Retzlaff, about to launch himself into a marking contest, crumpled suddenly to the ground, instantly clutching at his left knee. All the signs of a textbook ACL rupture were there, and the sombre disbelief amongst the Brisbane supporters in attendance was palpable. Disbelief was later joined by frustration when word got around that Bryce had been told pre-game that he was in line for senior selection the following week.

Subsequent scans confirmed the worst and Retzlaff underwent a full knee reconstruction. Not one to sulk or navel-gaze, Bryce immediately threw himself into an assistant coaching role with the reserves, clearly enthusiastic about contributing to the team in any way he could. His dedication to the cause was not taken for granted, and on the day that the Lions reserves held aloft the NEAFL Northern Conference premiership cup, coach Nathan Clarke specifically singled out Retzlaff for his contribution over the season.

In an increasingly unromantic and businesslike AFL competition where senior list spots are highly valued, Retzlaff was delisted at seasons end - surprising some. From the cusp of AFL footy to cleaning his locker in the space of three months, the difference between success and the scrapheap in this game can be decided by something as innocuous as a thin piece of fibrous connective tissue giving way.

There is hope amongst some Brisbane supporters that Retzlaff may be given a chance at salvaging his AFL career via the rookie list, albeit a fading hope in light of Retzlaff's #8 guernsey already being handed over to a new owner.

If he is overlooked, rest assured he will be remembered fondly by the ragtag band of dedicated reserves watchers with a penchant for nostalgic hypotheticals that usually start off with "If only..." and conclude with a wistful "...he could have been anything".

I would be interested to hear Quigley and perhaps Offsider opinion on Retzlaff upside vs some of the forward draft prospects in Mason Shaw or Spencer White. Do you guys think he has as much up side as these guys (considering he is also a few years further along in his development) or would you rather have one of those two young talls?

I should say firstly that I didn't rate Retzlaff very highly and I always had my doubts that he would make it to AFL level. He seemed to me to be an average contested mark, have average and very inconsistent disposal skills, no great athletic ability outside of endurance and work-rate, average footy nous. That may have been enough for him to dominate at NEAFL level against the lower level teams, but I always felt he was up against it making the grade at AFL level.

I would definitely rate Mason Shaw and Spencer White above Retzlaff, I would also rate Liam Flaherty above him as well. They are all more athletic imo, are better marks and have better footy nous. I would definitely take one of these two young talls without a shadow of doubt. I think that the Club had a tough call delisting an injured player but I feel it was the right one.

Hopefully Retzy will get lots of exposure playing for Box Hill and reignite his career!

BOX Hill has been busy working its Queensland connections, securing two former Brisbane Lions for next year's VFL season.

Retzlaff, 21, played 11 senior games for the Lions in 2011 and showed good form in the NEAFL this year before an ACL injury ended his season.

Young said Box Hill was happy to find the tall forward it was looking for.

"What we like is that he's got the fire to get back into the system," he said.

"We want guys who want to be there for the right reason. They're there with fire in the belly.

"He may not be ready for round 1, but certainly we're taking a long term approach. I think he'll be a very powerful player."

Bryce Retzlaff just played his first senior game for the Box Hill Hawks over the weekend, kicking one goal coming off the interchange bench. I think he played three prior matches in the Developmental side, kicking five goals in total.

Apparently, there were some complications with his recovery from the knee surgery and he was not scheduled to start playing until June (looks like it was the end of June).

Hope he can carry on successfully for the remainder of the season in the seniors.
