I think Nathan Buckley's desicion to join the magpies rather than the kangaroos, is a desicion he will regret for the rest of his life.

- its true, buckley has proven himself to be a champion collingwood player. a player who deserves the captaincy

but consider what he has missed out on:

- if he went to north,

he would have played in 3 grandfinals
2 premierships
probably would have won a norm smith
a big chance to have won a couple of brownlows (in a winning side)
and probably would have been the heir to the captaincy after w. carey

history will remember him as a collingwood great

at north or essendon, he would have been remembered as one of the game's greats

he has missed out on so much because he joined the magpies, and he'll regret it for the rest of his life!

Stupid thing to say! If he regrets coming to Collingwood he would have left by now!! Ever think of that? Well obviously not!!! So don't go shooting ur mouth off if you don't think of the facts first.

He should be rembered as a great for sticking by HIS club through hard times. I feel sorry for Buckley, and he in fact did make the wrong decision. BUT at that point in time it may have well looked like a good one. I am a Collingwood supporter and I regret that Buckley isn't a bit younger and started playing for us about now. Buckley will always be a great whether you want to remember him or not.

Collingwood will not play a finals games until Buckley has either left or retired. I've never seen anybody hog the ball so much. Everytime he gets within 100 metyres of goal he takes a shot.
Buckley is the reason SAV's immense talents were wasted. Something that won't happen at Arden Street.

Pediction for 2001 - Saverio Rocca to be AFL's leading Goalscorer and Premiership player, Nathan Buckley to be a dual Wooden Spoon player.

Buckley also made a mistake leaving Brisbane. I've no doubt that he would have been good enough to drag them all the way to a premiership over the past few years. Very poor judgement.

You know what! I have no sympathy for him. He made his bed, he can sleep in it.

Regardless of where he went, he left Brisbane in pursuit os something better and didn't get it.

He has stuck by Collingwood but really he had no choice.

He publicly humiliated both North and Brisbane with the way he went about what he did.

Do you think, as the wonderful player he is, his reputation, which already has him accepted as FIGJAM, would not proceed him.

He has no choice but to stay at Collingwood and he made an error in judgement, but one he did with no regard for opposition clubs, which have proven to be far bigger than him.

Too bad Bucks, and had North had him, they may not have won more flags - same as Essendon.

Who would these clubs have lost to keep their salary cap under the limit????

Oh no, Essendon just would have paid him anyway.

it was a known fact that when he was drfted to brisbane it was stated in his contract he waould play there for 2 years and then go to the club of his chioce.
hindsight is a wonderful thing yes u look at it now and he had made the mistake of coming to collingwood but at the time he thought they had a future there.
i say at least one thing for him he,s been very loyal to collingwood.
cheers!

What people do not realise was that Buckley was very close to signing with Geelong (he in fact said that he was going to Geelong but Collingwood on the final day of negotiations pulled him right out of the Cats claws so to speak) Read the old newspapers from 93 and see what i mean. But hey, I'm glad he didn't go to geelong, we probably would be broke by now if we paid Figjam what Collingwood are paying him. LOL
He's still a great player but.

There was originally a deal between brisbane and North and North were shafted in it,, but you win some you lose some.

As for the Cats, you are spot on - he was almost there.

Where the original poster got the mail he was considering Essendon I'll never know, but I do know they always like to think that Essendon is involved in everything.

Robert Flower and Bob Skilton. Two players whose total number of finals games can be counted on one hand, and both are legends.

Nathan Buckley may have made the mother of all mistakes in turning down North, but I reckon that in years to come, he'll be remembered as one of the game's champions.

Still, I have very little sympathy for FIGJAM. If he stayed with Brisbane, he could've been that extra player they needed to land the premiership. If he was at North, then he would've been at least a dual premiership player.

Dont compare them in the same light please Shinboners.

They never disrespected other clubs and whats more were one club players.

Buckley has two black marks they dont.

Can't have him compared in their light - their loyalty was based on love of the club.

Buckely's is based on a situation he created for himself.

Believe me, were it not Collingwood and had he not made a dickhead of himself to so many other clubs and created a rod for his own back, he would have left Collingwood long ago.

Both Skilton and Flower are revered because they remained loyal and true to their respective clubs. Buckley got out at the first opportunity at Brisbane to chase glory at Collingwood. This has him tainted as a mercenary; a stigma that will remain meaning he will never achieve the levels of Skilton and Flower.

People have mentioned 'the hindsight thing' when talking about Buckley before

well I say phooey to that idea.

Anyone could see at the end of 1994 that the Bears were going places, wheras Collingwood were marking time, at best.

So Buckley showed very poor judgment in 1994.
No matter which way you look at it.

He will probably retire from the game with a reputation as a legend but will have nothing to show for all his efforts except a couple of club champ awards.

No Brownlow
No Premierships
No Norm Smiths
Not even any more finals games to add to the ONE SINGLE GAME he has already played.

Its hard for me to feel sorry for him, and I don't especially hate Collingwood either.

I just think he is a chump and is paying the price for thinking that the Pies were a club that could take him places.

Quite clearly they are not.

cheers

Well, I for one, am proud to say that Buckley is a part of Collingwood, and surely by now if Bucks wanted to leave (and he had the chance to) he would have.
If Bucks hadn't have come to Collingwood, then it is more than likely he would have played finals footy, but finals isn't EVERYTHING in football.
I know everyones gonna bring up the whole thing about Bucks not accomplishing anything in his time at Collingwood.. but I couldnt' really care, he's a true champion of the game, and to have him on MY team is a privelidge-
Although, I do feel sorry for Bucks, it must get pretty frustrating knowing hes up there with the best, and not being able to gain his best where he is...

Hope for Bucks sake, the pies are a force again in the time when he's still playing with us....on ya bucks

With Nathan Buckley it sounds a bit like the case of "If you live by the sword, you'll die by the sword". If Nathan Buckley hadn't burnt bridges of other clubs trying to secure his services (and indeed Brisbane), he would now be in the position of being able to stay or leave Collingwood without looking like a fool. I hope for his sake and for Collingwood that he does get to make several finals appearances in the coming years but, he should defintely rue a few decisions and comments he made in the past.

One thing first, this topic is very, very old. I agree (AGAIN) Buckley made a mistake. Buckely was a Magpie from the beginning and has stayed a Magpie, whether or not he played for Brisbane is another matter.

Another point is, have any of you actually met Buckely and talked to him? Like to see replies on this because its as if alot of you live with him or something, and know exactly what he may have been thinking at a certain time, get real.

People make mistakes everyday, everywhere and any how, but he is not a MERCENARY for not playing at YOUR club.

Please Move on!

Shinboners,

I agree with your earlier comments about Skilton and Flower.

I think that while Buckley may have done the wrong thing by Brisbane and apparently a few other clubs many years ago, it would be wrong for anyone to doubt his character in staying with a bottom side for the long haul.

As a saints fan I would have to add Danny Frawley to that category. He played 240 games, captained the club for 9 years and only played finals football in 1991 and 1992 (3 games). Obviously he didn't have the natural ability of the other three, but there was nothing he wouldn't do for his team.

there was a lot of talk that buckley was close to coming to essendon this year
i think the trade involved lucas, alessio and one other

Would have been interesting - Collingwood could have lost another one there.

But the original poster was intimating he was going to Essendon that year, of which I was unaware.

And besides, what's wrong with a cheap shot between Bomber and Kanga fans anyway.

Modern player/club loyalty is in modern times a goner. Players are traded each year in a big meat market, so it's little wonder players look out only for themselves.

In many previous threads I have bagged Bucks - not because of his disloyalty to the Lions - but because he left himself soooo open by slagging off the club he was leaving as a no hoper club. "I am leaving to play finals football". ha ha ha ha ha.

An exit with dignified silence would have done the trick!
