Coach Buckley to end AFL journey empty handed

Anyone who says 'he can't coach' are delusional. How the hell would you know? Do you have any idea about the inner workings of the Collingwood Football Club. We only see how the players translate a gameplan into action and draw conclusions on the basis of that. Collingwood are a very good side and are well and truly in the mix to win a flag in the next couple of years. This is not to guarantee they will, but I think it's a bit ridiculous to attribute this to supposedly poor coaching.

When are we going to meaningfully acknowledge that the senior coach no longer holds the mantle of sole responsibility at a football club? From assistant coaches, list managers and on field leaders, the senior coach is one cog in a much more nuanced system. Certainly their views hold considerable weight but I'd daresay times have changed where their power is absolute.

People who attribute a side's performance to a coach are dumb football fans.

He is the only coach to be given six years to learn on the job with declining results year on year. Impossible to judge him against any other coach as no other coach would have been given that long with those on field results. He coaches well now.

FIGJAM.
Could play a bit.
Not a bad coach.
He does seem to attract misfortune in footy.
Coaching a flag would immediately turn him into a legend, like Roos and Dimma. Could be this year, they are not far off it.

Didn't like Buckley as a player, but I have no doubt he is one helluva coach.
I could see why he wouldn't be liked as a person because he's a smug twat with a chip on his shoulder. But it's hard not to like him as a player, one of the best who's played, amazing skills, not dirty, etc.

Thanks for confirming Ports SANFL history doesn't mean anything

But they didn't confirm that. Every reference in the OP was to the AFL only.

So will Hinkley

Yep agree

Just missed out in 2002 and 2003 as a player coming up against one of the teams of the century
Could of won the premiership the year mccarthy unfortunately passed away - were never going to beat Sydney that final due to the trying circumstances
Missed by a kick 2018
Missed by a kick to play in the big one last year
Constant injuries to their key players each year
Howe this year out with injury for a long period already with who knows what misfortune to follow?
Just doesn’t seem destined to get that elusive flag

oh well
Too bad too sad

Have a strong feeling Buckley will leave footy destined not to win a flag as a player or coach in the AFL.
Don’t dislike the guy and would be happy for him to miss out being a port man.
Thoughts?
Still he won a brownlow and a norm Smith.
What have you won? Thoughts?

Nobody cared about the SANFL in 1992. It was a second tier comp by that stage. All the good South Australian footballers were playing with the Crows or the 14 other AFL clubs. That's how an 18yo kid was able to do a "Dusty" and win the Magarey Medal, Oatey Medal and club best & fairest for the premiership team.

SANFL records should really have a line drawn between the 1990 and 1991 seasons to denote the drop in quality. Same with WAFL records after 1987. The truth is the SANFL was already on the wane in the late 80's with the influx of A-Graders at VFL clubs (e.g. Kernahan, Bradley, Motley, Naley, Platten, Hall, Anderson, Williams, Mickan, Rendell, Lindner, McGuinness, Kappler, Stretch, Abernethy, Fielke, etc)

It's silly to compare the legit Magarey Medals won by Barrie Robran, Russell Ebert and Malcolm Blight to the Magareys won by Nathan Buckley, Garry McIntosh and Andrew Jarman (in '97). It's like saying Liston Trophy winners like James Podsiadly and Aaron Edwards are Brownlow Medallists.

Greg Phillips was a washed-up hack at Collingwood who went back to the SANFL and dominated for Port. A number of barely-average players from the VFL were delisted and ended up starring in the SANFL post-1990. Scott Hodges... Port's superstar full forward who kicked 153 goals in 1990... he kicked just 30 goals for the Crows in 1991 vs AFL full backs. He was given the flick after 4 seasons & 38 games

The Pies are an unbelievably boring team for the list Buckley has at his disposal. If they can’t win a premiership while Pendlebury and Sidebottom are still playing well I doubt they will.

sh*t Thread.
The Pies players kicking 1.5 in the final quarter is why they lost, nothing to do with Bucks coaching.

Here is another school of thought, the Pies list is actually not all that flash outside their obvious couple of A Grade champs like Pendles, and he has arguably overachieved with them in the past couple of years ago

Their forward and backline, bar Darcy Moore are hardly worth writing home about, esp now since sadly Jeremy Howe has gone for rest of the season.

Didn't like Buckley as a player, but I have no doubt he is one helluva coach.
A fit pendles in the 2018 gf and you would have that flag...
