I think the fact that they gave him the nickname FIGJAM when he was there explains a lot of it.

He even admits he was up himself early in his career and that put people offside with him.

Buckley was drafted by the Brisbane Bears for the 1992 season, but Buckley did not want to play for them - he wanted to go to Melbourne - so he sat the 1992 season out and played in the SANFL. In 93 he agreed to go to Brisbane ONLY on the proviso that they would work out a suitable deal for him to go to a Melbourne club in 1994. His reasoning was he wanted to play for a team that would participate in and win premierships. Ironically, the team he left became the most succesful team in the AFL winning 3 premierships in a row.

That's not true. Only cocky arrogant ones (ala Buckley, Carey). Nobody ever says a bad word against players like Robert Harvery, Andrew McLeod, James Hird etc etc.

At first it was because he was arrogant. Then he went to Collingwood, which isn't going to help anyone get rid of that tag, then he was just a good player that played for the pies...But everyone agrees he was a great player. Plus the older he got, the more he toned it down.

No matter how many kicks he got or how many pin point passes he delivered, in years to come Buckley will be remembered for a few unsavoury incidents. Pie fans can try to rewrite history all they like, but whats done is done.

No. The reality is Buckley is the only player in the history of this competition that I am aware of that went to a club with full disclosure that he would leave and when and with a pre arranged transfer deal that would ensure the club that traded him was looked after.
