Its not childish at all. The Swans offered him a 9 year deal so Hawthorn couldn't match it. The only reason the AFL signed off on it was that all 9 years had to be included in their cap. Same applies with any free agent signing.
So hawthorn couldnt match it?

Or didnt want to?

If buddy holds them to the contract id go tough t***ies - if he decides to retire - fair play

The AFL will hold the Swans to the salary cap implications under the free agency rules. Buddy himself won't be paid a cent if he retires unless the contract he signed stipulated it.

Not really.....

Its not like they are deprived of 1st and 2nd rounders like Carlton in 2002 and 2003 and the crows in 2012-2013.

Sort of evens it out anyway. They get an extra 10% in their COLA. take that 1 million or 10% away, they are tenchinically in the same line with all the other AFL clubs Salary cap wise.

Don't let facts get in the way of your story

Sydney offered the massive deal so Hawthorn couldn't match it, or else either a) Buddy stays at Hawthorn and HFC is held to the contract exactly like Sydney will be (haha should be)
or b) Buddy goes to Sydney, who have to stump up two top 10 picks to Hawthorn for Bud, while still wanting to bid on Mills (who Carlton bid on at pick 3). Difficult to manage.

If Hawthorn knew they could have retained the services of peak-Buddy for 6 years then dumped the contract (or got the two top 10 picks) they would have matched.

If he retires (a big if) Sydney should include him in the cap or else free agency will become a mess. Other clubs should be furious at the suggestion Sydney will get bailed out, too.

If he were to retire would love to see the Swans pull a Bobby Bonilla and pay him $100k a year for the next 30

Three mega MLB contracts signed this year:

Manny Machado - Dan Diego Padres - 10yr/$300m

Bryce Harper - Philadelphia Phillies - 13yr/$330m

Mike Trout - Los Angeles Angels - 12yr/$430m

And these are of course US dollars.

But these numbers are chicken feed!

Lionel Messi from FC Barcelona currently makes about 106m Euros, approximately $120m.

Per season!

Strange childish ruling from the afl

Do players that retire early from other clubs get their contracted money included in the salary caps for the years they dont play?

Probably the only other player who would be in the same situation as Buddy would be Tom Lynch. Moved clubs as a RFA, on a long-term deal that he might not see through.

The Swans tried to price the Hawks out of the market for Buddy by offering an extreme contract that would not be matched. The AFL recognised this loophole when it happened and realised that if they let that one go, then all clubs would do it and restricted free agency was a pointless exercise.

The AFL made sure it was clear to the Swans (and others) that in offering such a deal, they would be taking on the risk if the contract failed to last the distance. It wasn't childish, it was a common sense accountability measure, and the Swans still chose to sign him once this was outlined.

If he retires (a big if) Sydney should include him in the cap or else free agency will become a mess. Other clubs should be furious at the suggestion Sydney will get bailed out, too.

The only suggestions of it are in this thread though. The AFL won't backflip on it, it would have a significant ripple effect on the competition.

Thank you for explaining it properly to people who can't understand.

Otherwise, I'd like to see the Hawks offer Coniglio $20 million over 20 years. Oh, you're not not going to match that, GWS? Cool, he's ours then...

Bobby B hasn't played since the early 90's and still gets $1.5m a year from the Mets every year until 2035

Dont the players on average contracts get an extra 10% ?

Or did thst get taken away as well?

That's literally what COLA was and, yes, it was taken away.

Surely the Swans loaded this contract heavily in the early to middle years so there won’t be a massive loss in years 7,8 & 9.

Buddy will play next season but wouldn’t be surprised if he retires in 12 months time when he has fully broken down and his contract only being valued around $600k per year.....

From memory he only gets a lot less in year 9 of the deal, years 7 and 8 he's getting paid close to the peak amount.

The payment structure was never officially released, but there have been reports that it's a backended deal with the next two years being the heaviest (2020 & 2021), and the final year being a million. We don't know 100%, obviously.
