Not sure of the name of the Adelaide player but i'll open the bidding at 6 weeks, one of the worst things i've seen on a football field, i'll leave it up to other posters to call it a dog act.

Really dangerous act. But hard to see what he can be done for. Unduly rough play? With the current system it would be high, medium impact (?), in play. The potential for injury was enormous, but what actually happened will probably mean nothing will happen.

Looked absolutely awful in slow motion. For a moment I thought the Crow had actually broken his neck.

That said, Franklin went for the mark from behind, arms past his opponent's neck reaching for the ball. Then was unable to brace due to the way they fell. After impact, he then tightened the headlock and lent down, placing pressure on the neck.

Looks bad for the game, so I'm expecting weeks for an unduly rough play. Commentators didn't get it, the 50m was for the second 'lean' once on the ground. Could equally be zero as it wasn't intentional.

Perhaps someone could compile youtube clips of Buddy's signature headlock move. A few spring to mind - tonight, Buddy v Rutten in 2012 prelim, Buddy v Milburn 2011.

The guy is a disgrace.

it looked really shit. nobody needs to be in any doubt that players should not be brought to ground, from a height, in a headlock. he needs a week or more.

I would like to see him go for 5 weeks to set an example. I saw it as a deliberate action to hurt out of frustration. I'll give Franklin the benefit of the doubt, in that I believe he is actually too stupid to realise how badly he could have hurt the Adelaide player.

But nevertheless, through his disgustingly selfish action we almost witnessed a death today.

A quick thought but accept there is a fair bit of grey here;

Reckless (2), High? (3), Head (2) = 7 Activation Points - Level 4 - 425 Points excluding loadings.

Seems about right. Should go for a while, Otten could have ended up in a wheelchair. Assuming he has a few carry over points it would mean a definite 4 week suspension.

No logical thinking Hawthorn supporter could defend or condone anything in that incident by Buddy. If it'd had been an opposition player who'd done that to one of our guys I would be foaming at the mouth over it.

I don't think Buddy is a 'dirty' player by nature but he's clearly very frustrated with his form at the moment and appears to have had a huge brain fade. One that could've been potentially very costly to himself and Otten. Should get weeks for this. Needs to learn a lesson.

It's definitely high contact. Thankfully it's only low impact, though it had the potential to be life threatening (severe). The only question is whether it's deemed to be Reckless or Intentional.

Assuming it's Reckless, then that's 5 activation points and a grade 2 offence. For a Rough Conduct charge, that's 225 points. This isn't Franklin's first offence, so he probably has some "bad record" loading factor to be applied as well. Even if he's got the maximum 50% loading, he's still only looking at 330-odd points, less 25% for pleading guilty. That means he's probably looking at a 2-week vacation for almost killing another player.

I really hope that the MRP has the balls to send this one straight to the tribunal. Rough Conduct is not designed for something as dangerous as what Franklin attempted to do. Franklin must have come within a gnat's bredth of snapping Otten's neck. He needs to be rubbed out for this, for a very, very long time indeed.

It's definitely a tough one, but personally I don't see how it could be classed as reckless. That is not at all a reflexive motion when you're falling forwards. I'm pretty sure he knew what he was doing. Intentional every day of the week imo, but we'll see what happens.

Glad Otten got out unscathed as it definitely had the potential to be very, very bad.

Good fair post, think he was trying to impose himself and was frustrated a lot of the game. It just looked bad the extra movements on a guys neck looked accidental at first but he kept going. Two weeks at least

Even if it's intentional, it's still only 6 activation points and a level 3 offence - 325pts plus loading (less guilty plea). I still think it needs to be referred directly to the Tribunal.

Yeah, that's certainly not enough for me. Tribunal probably the best option. Like was previously mentioned in this thread, I don't think Buddy's a dirty player but it's the kind of brain fade that really needs to be used to set a big precedent. Nobody wants to see those kinds of incidents in the AFL.
