Bower clearly BOG today. So impressive.

Simpson brilliant, as usual.

Edwards great, Hartlett solid - hopefully these two can step up.

So happy with Bower's game though - his rebound was absolutely fantastic.

Special mentions to Jackson, who ran hard as usual, and Grigg, who was slightly overwhelmed but still got the job done.

Eddie Betts again a non-event, J Russell very quiet early but made up for it with some tenacious efforts in the second half.

I wouldn't be surprised if he were. Would be surprised if it was anyone but Judd too. Given the likelyhood for Judd to attract possibly more than one tagger. Let Carrazzo, arguably the best ball winner in the team, be assigned to the tagger, and make Johnson have to choose between Judd and the bloke who's constantly near the pill.

With Judd at 80-85%, I don't mind him playing almost as a decoy so early in the year, if it means our other blokes get a stack of it.

I was interested to see Carazzo lay a perfect block releasing Judd in a pack.

Game Day observations:

  • like the look of Edwards and Jamison.
  • Eddie Betts has been crap pre-season and more disturbingly, slow. Jordan Russell will not make it.
  • We still have no system going forward and once again always seem to only kick to Fevola. We need more avenues to goal. He is often double and triple teamed, the ball hits the deck and the opposition whisk it away. We desperately need forward crumbers.
  • Our disposal and general field kicking remains second rate and we continue to turn it over cheaply. We WILL be punished by most sides.
  • The question remains what do these blokes do at training? Do they work on foot skills under match conditions? I have not seen any improvement in 5 years.

In Eddies defence, I had a wuick chat with him after the game and he knows and willingly admits that he feels out of sorts. At least he has realised this and hopefully gets himself right:thumbsu:.

This has probably been done to the doormat, but I may aswell post my own little write-up of the game, just a few things. Keepi in mind I had compiled the information while very distracted (footy), and did the actual write-up at about 2:00am this morning so bare with me!

First Quarter
The ground looks abolutely superb, definately AFL standards. The turn out was massive. I arrived 20 minutes into the game, but I do know that Judd was very out of sorts for the first 10 minutes, but controlled the game from then on. Grigg's first quarter was superb, getting his hands on the ball and using the disposal. Mistakes in the backline kept us down, and Murphy playing shakey football didn't help. Also not helping the cause, Andrew walker made his way off of the ground, punching the air in frustration that his shoulder had been injured again after missing a tackle, landing on his chest, his shoulder in an awkward situation.
Carlton: 3.5.23
Wester Bulldogs: 5.1.31
Goal Scorers: Jackson, Edwards, Fevola and ???(was before I arrived, sorry! From all reports, I hear Edwards kicked three, so maybe it was him?)

Second Quarter
Edwards started the quarter at Full Forward, Fevola playing around the forward pocket. Kade Simpsons ability to cover ground was unbeleivable. Jarrod Waite's efforts in defence were top quality, making life easier for the midfield and backline, one most notably Bryce Gibbs. His disposal was pin point, and he had no lack of touches. Brendan Fevola remains inaccurate, but managed a goal throughout the quarter. Our backline started to look as though it was going to crumble, but alike the Port Adelaide pre-season game, they made us look pretty good. Paul Bower looked as though he could mark any possible kick whilst Marc Murphy was finding his feet. Jamison's efforts are top quality, not giving anything away. Nearer to the end of the quarter, Hartlett's attacking certainly lifted, competing for the ball at every opportunity. After a shakey start, Chris Judd's skills returned to those of his West Coast years, brilliant. It seemed as though the second quarter would be the quarter where we would be blown away, but Matthew Kreuzer's work in the ruck changed the tone, and kept the Blues alive.
Carlton: 6.7.43
Western Bulldogs: 9.4.58
Goal Scorers: Cloke, Fevola, Houlihan

Third Quarter
After an Edwards goal 50 seconds into the quarter, the Blues looked to storm ahead of the Bulldogs, especially after a follow up goal to Chris Judd, getting his name on the scoring list for the first time at Carlton after receeiving a handball, sending the ball through the sticks. Bannister was suprising during the quarter, lifting his tempo and playing decent football. Eddie Betts knew how to get his hands on the football, but was unable to get the ball off properly, his disposal letting him down. After Marc Murphy was reported for charging, Jarrod Waite made a super specky deep in the Bulldogs forward line over Chris Johnson, definately rattling him. Short after, Will Minson picked a fight with Jarrod waite in the Blues backline, a very silly idea, as the specky wasn't intended to hurt Johnson. The Bulldogs couldn't hit a target for a span of the quarter, assisted by Matthew Kreuzer's one percenters, opening the door for Carlton a fraction more. Minson was completely out classed by Jarrod Waite, while Houlihan was busy being his inventive self. Kreuzer earned himself a free kick in the forward line through and excellent tackle, not converted. Matthew Kreuzer was easily the best man on the field for Carlton during the quarter, depsite Judd's continuous good form. The Blues were able to get to players in space during the waurter, something they hadn't done often during the game.
Carlton: 10.11.71
Western Bulldogs: 11.7.73
Goal Scorers: Edwards, Judd, Russel, Fevola

Fourth Quarter
The last time the Blues would ever kick to the Heatley stand turned out to be a good one. While Bower was playing well from the Half Backling, Grigg easily picked out the free man in Heath Scotland in a packed forward fifty. His ability to cover ground and back up his decisions was amazing. A great kick from Adam Hartlett 45 metres out on the boundary line put the Blues up against the Dogs by 5, 79-74, although short lived. Eddie Betts received the ball right infront of goal, making a mess of it, rolling it too far across face. A successful kick would have the Blues up by 11. Kade Simpson moved very well all over the field, showing his great footy sence. Bryce Gibbs ability to get deep into packs led to a great mark from Jake Edwards to put the blues up again by 5, 86-81. Shortly after, Steven Browne was pushed in the back, leading to another Carlton goal putting the aheD 92-82. Jordan Bannister had no problem in getting his hands on the ball, but his disposal let him down. A quite Setanta O'hAilping was pushed to full forward, getting his hands on the ball and applying strong pressure on the Doggies backline. Ryan Jackson played great football furing the quarter. Bret Thornton made an excellent mark on the Half Back line, denying the Bulldogs access, although his disposal was off.
Carlton: 13.15.93
Wester Bulldogs: 12.12.84
Goal Scorers: Hartlett, Browne, Scotland

Overall Goal Scorers: Fevola (3), Edwards (2), Jackson, Judd, Russel, Cloke, Houlihan, Hartlett, Browne, Scotland and ???

I was pretty frustrated at times during the game, but the way we ended up moving the ball from the start of the second half (into space), everything seemed to flow. The handballs again were out to play, again the tactic not paying off, too many disposals. If we can utalise this tactic to best use, we would be a much better team. Judd's debut in navy blue came on a great day. A come from behind win on the last Blues game before the Heatley Stand is demolished was the best possible outcome, despite a walker injury.

According to Carrazzo, it doesn't look too good for Andrew.

"We've just been told he's gone to hospital and it's definately his shoulder. Unfortunately it doesn't look good," said Michael Jamison following the game.

Chris Judd all through out the game pulled players out and gave advice, great captianing.

Fun Facts
A player who shall go un-named left Princes Park with a pirated version of Underbelly, episodes 1, 2 and 3 in his hand.

Heath Scotland headed off to a function following the game in his nice little white collared shirt, jacket in hand.

Aisake O'hAilpin is two weeks off playing footy.

Marc Murphy wore light orange and light blue Nike shoes after the game(ugliest things possible!).

Brad Fisher had just picked up his dry cleaning.

Just some other thoughts....

Kade Simpson is becoming my favourite player.
Great guts, toughness and determination not to be beaten.
We all saw it last year and was why he was in the mix for leadership positions. An inspiration to his team mates.

Jarred Waite looked so focussed on his backline job, the way he looked when he towelled up Riewoldt last year.

Browne showed some good courage.

Fevola's fitness starting to return. Defenders with the ball, look out when he's around! From being his greatest weakness, his defensive pressure is now a strength. Only his fitness to follow up again and again is in question.

The boys are starting to execute Ratten's game plan better.

So while we know how well kreuzer did around the ground but how would he have done in terms of tapouts against the more seasoned ruckman? Would he have had 15 and were they well directed?

Also did he take many marks around the ground and was his disposal good?

Also I read on TC that Hartlett took 9 marks. Does this sound about right?

Krezuers tap work was sublime, i'd tip him to get 15 well directed tabs per game come start of the season next year. His disposal was quite good, and he was very versatile throughout the day.

Harts was taking marks left and right, it's a shame he only converted one though.

Great news. Thanks Eddie. Would you have Hartlett starting CHF round 1 then? I'd like to think so. Did he miss a couple of shots?

Also in terms of taps on the night would Kreuzer have broken even with Hudson and Street?

Honestly, I wouldn't play him at CHF, either on one of the Forward Flanks or leading long from the pocket, vacating the spot for someone like Fev. He kicked his only goal from 45 out on the boundary line with absolute ease, it makes sence to play him somewhere were we can utalise his kicking ability, aswell as still have CHF free for the taking.

I think the question refering to Kreuzer would be one you'd have to bring up with HBF or Gilly, one of the real close watchers.

Cool. Thanks again Eddie.

Kreuzer didn't dominate the rucks, but against an accomplished tapper like Hudson he certainly didn't lower his colours.

As for Hartlett, I think CHF is ideal for him to be honest. His greatest skill is his long kicking, so I would suggest using him up the ground when we want the ball delivered into the 50 low and fast.

As has been mentioned earlier, we lined up today with a forward line reminiscent of Hawthorn's triangle. Fev playing the Franklin role, Hartlett as Roughead, Edwards as Boyle.

I can't see this working as I don't believe Edwards has the football smarts to be able to create enough space in the forward 50 for Fev, without being a passenger himself (see: Betts). Even so, it still requires someone with an ability to make the most of the rare opportunities that come their way (Boyle rarely gets more than 10 touches a game for the Hawks, but usually ends up with his 1 or 2 goals a game as a result of his man leaving to double team Franklin), and Edwards' kicking for goal both in the preseason and down at Preston hasn't been pretty.

If we're to adopt this model of a forward line, he'd need to either show enough to keep Brad Fisher out of the team, no small task in itself (although was a more than adequate substitution for him today), or be able to prove more handy a part of the triangle than Hartlett, given that Hartlett has a few more cm's on him, and the versatility to play down back, and perhaps pinch hit in the ruck.

He's not exceptionally crap by any standards, but the things he brings to the table, aren't as appealing to what the likes of Fisher, Hartlett and even Wiggins offer.
Don't take it the wrong way pal as everyone is entitled to an opinion, but I reckon footy smarts would be a long suit of Jakes.
Fair enough if you don't rate him,but I just thought that was an odd reason.

I'm with you, Edwards rotation around the forward line was great, and when we chucked him at FF at the start of the third I think it was, Fevola played from the Forward pocket. Call me crazy LondonCalling, but I think it should be more about Fevola creating space for Edwards, rather than vice versa. Fevola has the ability to take pack grabs, and he can deliver the ball forward aswell. Edwards just doesn't have that potential.

If Fevola can play from the pocket and lead up the ground (around the HF line), he can a) put a nice ball in for one of the boys or b) have a shot from 50, as we know from history that he can kick them.

Not so sure. Edwards is a very good contested mark. And exceptionally fast on the lead. With Fev dragging 2-3 of the best defenders with him, both Edwards and Hartlett will have a massive opportunity. I like this KP forward mix. :)

Exactly right, imagine what playing a small fella' who can drag his man all over the forward line at Full Forward and Fevola in the pocket would do to the minds of opposition teams defence! It also seems to work

Jake has a bucket-load of natural talent, and seems incredibly determined this year. Even when things aren't going well for him, he stays focused and keeps at the one percenters and team oriented stuff. Fev seems to be helping his development as well. :)

You'd love to think so. Somehow, i can jump imagine Edwards playing at FF week after week.

It's funny, last year I couldn't give a sh*t:p.
