Belgium were the dark horse at 2014

I don't think they can be considered a dark horse anymore. They simply have to deliver with the talent they have in that team.

De Bruyne, E Hazard, Courtois, Dembele, Kompany, R Lukaku, Alderweireld and Vertonghen are among the Premier Leagues best players, while Carrasco, Mertens, Meunier and T Hazard are quality also.

The only thing I don't get is why Chadli was selected ahead of a Jordan Lukaku and Fellaini/Witsel ahead of Nainggolan. Lukaku is a natural full back/wingback and I'd expect Vertonghen or Vermaelen will have to play minutes out on that left flank which are secondary positions for them, with centre back their preferred roles, Chadli offers absolutely nothing imo, while Nainggolans energy in midfield would be useful over Witsel/Fellaini who are similar in size being built like centre backs/targetman strikers and are less agile in midfield.

This will be a genuine piece of interest to me. Any sense of favouritism by a referee will be highly scrutinised. Any questionable penalty to Russia will be pounced on. That said, they must be a good chance to progress from their group anyway.

Awful decision especially when the players rallied behind him and said they want him to stay

Some heads will roll if the team fails now

    Winner? France

    Runner Up? Germany

    Smokey? England

Team you hope gets up/supporting besides Australia? Nigeria

Golden Ball (best player of tournament)? Mbeppe

    Golden Boot (leading scorer)? Griezmann

    Golden Glove (best keeper)? Allison

Biggest controversy that will occur during the games? Crowd violence outside stadiums

    Winner? France

    Runner Up? Germany*

    Smokey? Poland

Team you hope gets up/supporting besides Australia? Belgium

Golden Ball (best player of tournament)? Mueller

    Golden Boot (leading scorer)? Griezmann

    Golden Glove (best keeper)? Neuer

Biggest controversy? Hoping I am wrong, but knowing the rep of some Russian support groups, trouble will brew somewhere

    * Assuming they top their as predicted groups, France and Brazil are on same side of the draw, Spain and Germany are in the other half, so no France vs Brazil Final like I originally predicted

If you control Gazprom, you control the WC.

5-0 to Russia to start the tournament. 2 absolute blinders in stoppage time to put the cherry on top.

Saudi Arabia were absolute piss. Not a good sign considering they finished on top of us in qualifying.

Yeah I had Russia 2-1 as well, but instead they blew them away. A couple of gems late in the game. Saudi's looked out of sorts, Russians came out hungry

Now for tomorrow, 3 games a night for the next few weeks

Wow big start by the reds.

Let’s hope we put up a better effort than the Saudi’s although my fear is of the frogs turn it on we are in able of doing anything to stop them

De Gea is no longer the best goal keeper in the world, unbelievable error.

Unbelievable first half. Easily the game of the tournament so far and it’ll take some beating if the second half is as good

Morocco will be gutted, almost stole a point from Iran, only to concede an 95th minute own goal

Egypt gave up a late one early in the evening as well to Uruguay. Which sucks because I want them to have a deep run

Portugal vs Spain is an entertaining game so far. 2-1 at the half. Spain more threatening, but Portugal strong on the counter and Ronaldo being Ronaldo. Cannot stand him or Ramos so hope both teams don't go far

Missed the majority of the Egypt vs Uruguay game because of the Optus issues, so can’t comment on that. Late goal hurt and Salah looked crushed.

Morocco/Iran was a good game. Great first half, ugly second half. The own goal was dreadful and Morocco will be gutted to not get a point. Don’t think either will be easy beats for these two.

I thought SBS would show all games, so I was gutted and pissed to learn that's not the case, at least they will show the good match ups. Will have to hunt for livestreams. Many people were pissed off with Optus screwing up the coverage. Surprised Salah didn't play, they said he was right to go.

Unbelievable game. There won’t be a better game this tournament, so if you slept through the game make sure you watch the replay.

That Costa elbow to Pepe's head was ignored but the rest was football at its highest.
