Re: If Melksham became the equal of Stanton.

I guess unwarranted pressure by supporters like myself wanting him to perform an elite level rather than accepting he's a very good but not elite player doesn't help either.
I think some of the pressure that supporters put onto Stanton is because he started his career so strongly. He immediately made an impact.

His chance to become elite is increase that 5-10% to become like a Dane Swan, who is unfashionably elite. He is never going to be a Judd, Dal Santo or Ablett in the way that he plays.

I hope he becomes better than Stanton who is ridiculously inconosistent!
I actually agree. Cant believe how highly our supporters rate stanton:confused:
Does nothing when it matters, never gets his own ball and very inconsistent. I'd be happy if Melksham becomes a quicker version of Watson with a slightly better kick.

Is that all?

So any less than elite and you won't be happy?

Not to dote on stats again, but he averaged 5 contested possessions this year. Acceptable for an outside mid.

Fair enough, but i still wouldn't be happy if Melksham becomes similar, would like him to become more like Watson as putting his head over the ball and blasting out of the midfield, unlike Stanton where he lurks around the pack and waits for the ball to get feed out to him(from a player like Watson). Some of you might be happy if he ends up like Stanton but i personally would not, that's my opinion, I'm not really for those sort of players.

Re: If Melksham became the equal of Stanton.

I like the way this started out as a Melksham/ Stanton comparison and turned into yet another debate on Stanton! I myself have been known as a Stanton basher over the years, but I really do think that 2010 could be his breakout season. If he can damage opposition by kicking goals consistently (ala Ablett) and also work to get back to help out the defenders, then I think we are in for a stellar season from #5 in 2010. His ability to break tackles and also put a stamp on a game that we are in jeaopardy of losing also needs to improve. He seems to go missing when the game is going the other way but looks impressive when the Bombers are on fire. The last guy to wear #5 had the ability to change a game going awry and Stants needs that. On the Melksham topic - i think the kids gonna be a star to be honest. Needs some bulk, but has the rest in spades. Could play 6-10 games this year. Like the coach says "The game doenst know how old you are".....

I think Stanton is a great player and he has the stats to match. yes he is no Judd or Ablett but he is a fantastic footballer. I would be happy if Melksham was this good, stoked if he was better.

Not asking for much. If Watson had that, he be just about the best player in the comp.

And that's what we need, an elite midfielder as we have none.

Jobes kicking improved markedly in 2009 and I hear its one facet of his game he has been working even harder on over summer. Like Stanton, if Watson kicks more goals and spots up more forward targets (do we have any left?), he will be one of the elite midfielders in the AFL.

Re: If Melksham became the equal of Stanton.

Far out some people are delusional about draft picks.
A top 10 pick doesn't mean they are going to be an elite player who plays 200 games. For every Joel Selwood there is a Ryley Dunn.

There is a big, big step up from under 18's to AFL.

FWIW Stanton is likely to finish with 200+ games and finish in the top 10 in the best and fairest for at least 5-7 years of his career and probably win at least one best and fairest.

If Melksham turns out like that, I would take that and run. Anything more is a bonus

ffs not this shit again.

I wonder if there was a similar post about David Myers 2 years ago.

How about Angus Monfries who burst on the scene a while back.

I'd expect Melksham to barely play a game this year. We have a multitude of 3rd, 4th, 5th year+ mids who would be way ahead of him. Let him get some size and strength in the VFL and then aim for 10'ish games next year.

At the minimum.

Of course I want him to become better than Stanton. Heck, I want him to become better than Ablett Jnr and Hird. I want every player we draft to be that good. :D

I want every player Carlton draft to be nearly as good as Jarred Oakley Nicholls. ;)

You miss the thrust of the argument.

If Melsham can play Round 1 and hold his place for most of the season - It means that he may have special talent - not that the other players are ordinary.

After all, Hurley played Round 1 with a limited preparation.

Re: If Melksham became the equal of Stanton.

^^Our midfield is much, much harder to crack into than our defence - this time last year our key defensive posts were unknown.

But yes, if Melksham is tearing it up in pre-season, Daniel Rich-esque then he'll get a gig

I agree. If we can get as much out of Melksham as Stanton then we should all be happy.

good point, why focus on the positives?

Let's just hope our first pick in the National draft, and our first "true midfielder" in years, simply becomes "adequate" - maybe. That way, we never have to be disappointed.

Never mind that it's just off-season musings and fantasising - that simply has no place on a footy fan forum, especially in the off-season!

p.s. Myers is going to be a star this year ;)

Re: If Melksham became the equal of Stanton.

I just hope young Jake is still on our list in 3 years time and had played about 40-50 games by then.

If he gets to be half as good as Stanton I'll be stoked.

So, late last year more just over 50% of people said they'd be satisfied if Melk became the equal of Stants.

I suspect people's opinions will have changed?

Re: If Melksham became the equal of Stanton.

I'd like to see Melksham become a quality inside mid rather than a Stanton type, who sit outside the pack waiting for the easy cheap disposal...

We need two or three quality inside mids if we're going to get anywhere..

Thank God we have Watson.
